DESCRIPTION:This new temporary exhibition within EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum asks how the millions of Irish people in England have fared over the past 200 years. Based on landmark economic history research using new big data analysis\, it tracks the wealth\, health\, and living standards of Irish migrants and families of Irish descent\, showing that the Irish were substantially poorer than their English neighbours for generations. \nNo Irish Need Apply? highlights the extraordinary contribution Irish women and men have made to the English economy and wider society through their hard work\, vibrant culture\, and political activism. The exhibition also includes the words and music of Irish migrants in England captured in Philip Donnellan’s 1965 film “The Irishmen”\, in collaboration with the Irish Film Institute. \nThe exhibition has been developed by the Department of Economic History at the London School of Economics & Political Science from research by Professor Neil Cummins and Professor Cormac Ó Gráda (UCD). It has been curated by Dr Christoper Kissane\, Engagement & Impact Lead\, LSE Dept of Economic History.

This year\, the festival will honour the 300th anniversary of Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels with a special series of events. \nThe programme for the festival was officially unveiled at a ceremony in Marsh’s Library and speaking at the launch festival curator Grace McEvoy remarked: \n“It is my honour to launch the programme for this year’s Culture Date with Dublin 8. This year’s theme\, ‘Songlines of the City\,’ reimagines Dublin 8 as a place where the streets\, stories\, and songs reveal the neighborhood’s cultural DNA\, while ‘Gulliver 300’ reimagines Swift’s legacy with bold\, playful events where myth\, literature\, and local stories collide.” \nFlagship Events \nAmong the flagship events\, the Guinness Choir will celebrate its 75th anniversary with a special concert in St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Thursday\, 7th May. The title of the event\, “The City of Our Dreaming\,” comes from a poem commissioned by Paula Meehan to mark the occasion. \nAt the National Stadium on Saturday 9 May\, author and podcaster Donal Fallon hosts In The Ring: Dan Donnelly & Dublin’s Boxing Heroes\, a unique event celebrating the legendary 19th-century bare-knuckle boxer. Blending boxing history with poetry\, music and live performance\, the evening features contributions from Damien Dempsey\, Brian Kerr\, Barry McGovern\, Kelly McLoughlin\, Terry O’Neill\, Niamh Ní Charra and Emmet O’Brien\, followed on Sunday 10 May by a tag-team wrestling and slam poetry event. \nOn Wednesday 6 May\, The First Count: A Night in 1926 takes place at The Fumbally Stables\, hosted by Shite Talk: An Irish History Podcast. This immersive “Reeling in the Years”-style experience brings the first census of the Irish Free State vividly to life through live music\, performance\, food and storytelling in the heart of The Liberties. \nGulliver 300 Celebrations\nThis year marks the 300th anniversary of Gulliver’s Travels\, one of the most influential works of satire in literary history\, written in Dublin by Jonathan Swift. Culture Date with Dublin 8 celebrates this landmark with a series of events exploring Swift’s life\, legacy and enduring relevance. \nHighlights include a keynote lecture by Swift scholar Dr Brendan Twomey at St Patrick’s University Hospital\, examining the themes and cultural impact of Gulliver’s Travels\, followed by a guided walk and rare access to the historic Board Room\, where guests can view a selection of Swift artefacts including his writing desk and death mask. Swift’s Dublin\, a specially curated walking tour\, will trace the writer’s connections to the city\, from St Patrick’s Cathedral to the streets and spaces that shaped his work. \nAcross the district\, St Patrick’s Cathedral will open the Deanery\, where Swift once lived\, for special tours\, while Marsh’s Library will present an exhibition of original copies of Gulliver’s Travels. A range of additional activities will bring the story to life for all ages\, including Swift-themed walking tours\, a hands-on Gulliver’s Swap workshop creating DIY luggage from reclaimed textiles\, a young explorers adventure tour through Dublin 8’s green spaces\, and a Lilliputian Morning Rave featuring DJ Billy Scurry. A special Gulliver 300 collectible postcard\, illustrated by John Rooney\, will also be available during the festival. \nMusic \nOver the course of the festival\, churches\, distilleries and pubs across Dublin 8 will come alive with music\, transforming the neighbourhood into a vibrant\, multi-venue stage. \nThe Church of St Catherine & St James in Donore is set to become a uniquely atmospheric setting for a series of standout performances\, with Tom Dunne\, Fiachna O’Braonáin and Alan Connor performing on Wednesday 6 May\, followed by Phelim Drew bringing his Remembering Ronnie show to the space on Thursday 7 May. On Friday 8 May\, Camille O’Sullivan performs in the stunning surroundings of Christ Church Cathedral. \nElsewhere\, Sofar Sounds Dublin hosts an intimate night at Teeling Whiskey Distillery\, while a dynamic collaboration with BIMM Dublinwill see emerging artists take over venues across the district\, spotlighting the next generation of talent rooted in the area. An Góilín Traditional Singers bring the songs of Dublin 8 to life through a series of outdoor performances woven into a unique walking trail across the neighbourhood\, while St. George’s Brass Band will perform a lively outdoor concert in St Audoen’s Park. \nAlso on the programme\, the Westland Trio Baroque Ensemble presents Between Renaissance and Baroque at St Audoen’s Church\, an evocative concert journeying through medieval to Renaissance music from Ireland and England\, exploring the rich musical heritage of these islands in one of Dublin’s most historic settings. Raidió Rí-Rá presents AIRNEÁN\, an evening of music as Gaeilge bringing together new songwriters and traditional musicians\, offering a platform for some of the most exciting voices in contemporary Irish-language music. \nTalks & Tours \nDiscover Dublin 8 through a series of distinctive tours and talks that reveal the area’s hidden histories and lesser-told stories. Highlights include a special Alternative Tour of Kilmainham Gaol\, offering rare access to parts of the prison not usually open to the public\, and The Lost Prisons of Dublin 8\, a walking tour uncovering the sites of long-forgotten jails across the city. Dublin Decoded leads a Hidden Portobello tour exploring the area’s rich past as “Little Jerusalem” and its connections to literature\, film and migration\, while The National Archives of Ireland presents 1926 Census clinics\, giving audiences the chance to explore this landmark moment in Irish history with expert guidance. \nHistorian Liz Gillis presents a powerful talk at Richmond Barracks on the four Dublin 8 men executed following the 1916 Rising\, while a live edition of the Three Castles Burning podcast with Donal Fallon takes place at The Lord Edward. \nAdditional highlights include a lecture with David Caron at National College of Art and Design exploring the area’s stained glass heritage\, guided tours of Bully’s Acre Cemetery\, and a fascinating OPW talk on the medieval belltower of St Audoen’s Church. At Farmleigh\, visitors can explore both the poetic landscape of the estate through a Seamus Heaney-inspired walking tour and the social legacy of the Guinness Brewery through a talk on its pioneering approach to worker welfare\, amongst many others. \nFringe & Community \nAlongside the main programme\, a vibrant strand of fringe and community-led events brings together grassroots creativity\, local voices and shared experiences across Dublin 8. \nFrom exhibitions and installations to performances\, workshops and gatherings\, the programme reflects the energy of the area at street level. Highlights include a screening of Chats in the Flats at Donore Credit Union\, capturing working-class voices from the community\, alongside exhibitions by Liberties-based artists Duc Van Pham and Valerie Gannon\, offering intimate portraits of people and everyday life in the area. At Tailors’ Hall\, Throwing Shapes Artist in Residence Camilla Hanney presents her ceramic installation A Liberties Feast\, a striking and immersive work rooted in local tradition. \nCreative activity unfolds across the neighbourhood\, with a Dublin 8 art party hosted by Drink and Draw with Alternative Dublin at Drop Dead Twice\, socially engaged projects by NCAD students at Studio 8 in the Irish Museum of Modern Art\, and an exhibition trail by artists Ishmael Claxton\, Jye O’Sullivan and María Baez embedded in local businesses. The Liberties Weavers present a pop-up textile museum at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral\, continuing the area’s rich craft heritage. \nParticipation and connection are central throughout\, from LEGROOM Collective’s immersive theatre and DJ night All My Friends Are in Australia to the Rialto Community Arts Festival launch and open mic\, celebrating emerging voices. Audiences are also invited into La Catedral Studios for a special open studio evening\, while hands-on workshops like Branch Hair Studio’s ‘Studio Parents’ Hair School SOS’ offer practical\, social experiences. \nCommunity-led storytelling and heritage remain at the core of this strand. 1\,000 Waves: Hands of the City\, an interactive art ritual by Unity in the Community\, invites participants to explore belonging through shared stories and collective expression\, while projects from The Liberties Community Project and The Robert Emmet History Group\, and The Tenters Celebrated Heritage Group\, highlight the depth of local knowledge and lived experience. Bookings subject to 12.5% service charge per ticket (max €10.50) \nThe rambunctious Celtic folk of The Pogues\, the story-telling charm of The View\, the lush pop harmonies of Teenage Fanclub\, the jangly delicacy of the Smiths\, the yearning of a classic Oasis B-side and a Scottish brogue as defiant as the Proclaimers… Brògeal have it all – and make it their own. A bubbling cultural cauldron set to boiling point\, the sound overflows with accordion\, banjo\, bouzouki\, mandolin and perky penny whistle\, where ancient folk tradition meets an indie Gen Z sensibility and laughs\, sings and dances in the face of 21st century darkness. The death of the swaggering good-time band has been greatly exaggerated. \nFrom small-town Falkirk in central Scotland the folk-punk-indie-pop five-piece have big ideas\, with a reputation as one of the best live bands in Britain\, their communal\, sing-along\, delirious anthems igniting mosh-pit madness throughout the UK\, Ireland and beyond. Everybody loves them. \n“The thing about our music is that it transcends all age groups\,” notes vocalist/songwriter/guitarist Daniel Harkins. “You’ve got 14-year-old boys with their mums\, they’re all going mental\, you’ve got old punks\, middle-aged women\, young adults\, old people\, everybody’s digging it\, you know? There’s something for everybody because you’ve got your folky influences\, The Pogues\, with this indie edge and pop sensibilities.” \nBrògeal (pronounced Bro-gale) got here via the old-school\, DIY route. Borne from a friendship on a bus – Daniel and fellow songwriter Aidan Callaghan (vocals\, banjo) met on journeys to Celtic football games – they formed a typically ramshackle school punk band\, Shiva\,who were “shit”\, but the passion remained. Traditional folk fans forever\, loving The Dubliners nand The Pogues\, ideas for a folk band evolved\, soon joined by Sam MacMillan who taught himself to play his grandad’s accordion. When Covid struck in 2020\, more self-taught musicianship filled the void\, learning their folky craft on curious olde instruments\, two metres apart\, in Daniel’s back garden under a leaky Asda gazebo. Emerging from Covid\, two new recruits joined – local studio engineer Euan Mundie (bass) and Luke Mortimer (drums) – and the distinctive Brògeal sound took shape: fearlessly merging traditionally raucous Celtic folk with deft\, harmonious songcraft\, pop nous and the indie noughties energy they grew up on. \n“We never set out with a [musical] plan\,” notes Daniel. “Whatever we bring to the band\, no matter what genre\, it always ends up sounding like a Brògeal song anyway.” \nThey made their first EP for themselves\, ‘Dirt and Daydreams’ (2023) released on their own winningly titled CraicDen label\, followed by an eponymous EP in 2024 on Is Right Records\, leading to a signing with revered independent label Play It Again Sam (PIAS\, home to Nick Cave\, The Hives\, Cameron Winter). For the last 18 months they’ve toured relentlessly\, throughout the UK and Ireland\, gathering ecstatic fans\, have supported Paolo Nutini\, The Mary Wallopers and The Lathums\, found fans in both 6 Music’s Huw Stephen and Line of Duty actor Martin Compston\, been eulogised in Rolling Stone\, the Independent\, Clash\, The New Cue\, So Young and Dork. \n“We’ve always been kept busy and it just kind of got bigger and bigger at a really natural rate\,” says Aidan. “It’s the stuff of dreams. You think\, ‘Oh\, that could never happen’\, and we’re doing it!” \n“Aidan’s being kind of humble there\,” interjects Daniel. “Because we had the belief from the very start. That we’d be massive!” \nTheir debut album\, released this October\, spectacularly fulfils the belief. Tuesday Paper Club showcases their limitless musical range\, with lyrical themes of romance\, heartache\, booze\, local nutters\, nostalgia and loss\, its artwork featuring a paper boy\, Aidan’s wee brother Finn. The title is a withering\, generational quip: Daniel once worked the day shift in Falkirk’s oldest pub\, The Wheatsheaf (established 1779)\, “a total old man’s pub”\, where most days three old fellers took up residency with the newspapers. “They wouldn’t talk to each other until they’d had about five pints\,” says Daniel\, and when talk did start\, alongside the headlines\, there would be disparaging remarks on the apparently “stupid” young. “So I just thought it would be really cheeky to write about them\,” laughs Daniel\, who wrote the lyrics there on a Tuesday. “Just talking about the mundanity of what they were up to while being so judgmental\, you know?” \nThe album’s recording location was also unique. Black Bay Studio sits on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland’s profoundly remote Outer Hebrides\, a residential studio refurbished from a fish processing factory\, overlooking a stunning bay. Here\, the five slept alongside producer Richie Kennedy\, the Irish Producer/Engineer/Mixer based in London (Libertines\, Cardinals\, Last Dinner Party\, Interpol\, Dua Lipa/Kylie\, U2). \n“We want to be the biggest and best band in the world!” he now declares. “But we also want to have a good time doing this. Because\, in theory\, it could be curtains tomorrow.” Brògeal: A proper band\, for everyone\, cheering up the world. The good times\, finally\, are back.

DESCRIPTION:FIXITY is an avant garde music project formed by Irish multi instrumentalist and producer Dan Walsh in 2015 which moves in the worlds of psychedelic rock\, minimalism\, krautrock and free improvisation\, featuring an ever-growing pool of collaborators. \nIn 2024 Fixity released FIXITY8\, the most recent installment in a decade spanning series of solo-produced albums. Now Walsh and collaborators present a return to ensemble work for the first time since 2019’s ‘No Man Can Tell’ LP\, with a collection of new tunes and sounds expanding Fixity’s sonic territory ranging from expansive punk improv to ecstatic celebrations and minimalist explorations. \nThis project represents a new stage in the growth of Fixity’s music at a greater scale\, reaching across fresh musical worlds with the addition of strings arranged by NY/Cork based arranger Aine Delaney. Half recorded in Studio Sickan\, Malmo in 2022 and half in Cork’s Heavy Meitheal Studios HQ in 2023\, the album features an extended cast of long-time collaborators augmented with String ensemble. \nASSURANCE will be released on Vinyl and Digital in Spring 2026 on MOOTAPES label with Artwork by Stephen Morton.
