SUMMARY:NO IRISH NEED APPLY?
DESCRIPTION:This new temporary exhibition within EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum asks how the millions of Irish people in England have fared over the past 200 years. Based on landmark economic history research using new big data analysis\, it tracks the wealth\, health\, and living standards of Irish migrants and families of Irish descent\, showing that the Irish were substantially poorer than their English neighbours for generations. \nNo Irish Need Apply? highlights the extraordinary contribution Irish women and men have made to the English economy and wider society through their hard work\, vibrant culture\, and political activism. The exhibition also includes the words and music of Irish migrants in England captured in Philip Donnellan’s 1965 film “The Irishmen”\, in collaboration with the Irish Film Institute. \nThe exhibition has been developed by the Department of Economic History at the London School of Economics & Political Science from research by Professor Neil Cummins and Professor Cormac Ó Gráda (UCD). It has been curated by Dr Christoper Kissane\, Engagement & Impact Lead\, LSE Dept of Economic History.

SUMMARY:Formal and Wild Landscapes by Fergus Martin
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Dr. Margarita Cappock \nAbout the exhibition\n‘Formal and Wild  Landscapes’ by Fergus Martin can be described as an exhibition of illusions and dreams.  It incorporates sculpture\, animation\, photographic prints and sound projections that connect at an emotional and subliminal level. \nEvery aspect of the exhibition\, from its commencement in the cube space to the culmination in the upper gallery\, provides the viewer with an invisible kinetic experience as the art works ‘ping’ against each other and relate sequentially to what the viewer will encounter next.   The animation has as its starting point an idea the artist had for a sculpture in a landscape and has taken on another life in the virtual world – a fantastical version of a pastoral scene. \nMartin notes\, ‘It was sparked by my always seeing hay bales from trains. They always seem mysterious to me scattered over the landscape and make me think of how leprechauns fooled people who wanted their gold by placing rocks or hawthorn trees everywhere.  These hay bales appear to have landed from space and sit there day and night in every season.’ Some of the works in this exhibition have featured in a recent exhibition at the magnificent early eighteenth-century Palazzo Birago in Turin in 2025.    Visitors now can view these works from an entirely different perspective here in the contemporary setting of the Lab gallery in Dublin. \nAbout the artist\nFergus Martin is an Irish painter\, sculptor and photographer\, known for his post-minimlaist aesthetic.  His most recent solo exhibitions were Space – New Prints – at Green On Red Gallery \, Dublin and Formal and Wild  – Landscapes at Palazzo Birago\, Turin\, Italy\, in Dublin.  Also in 2025\, he took part in the group exhibitions CAIM at Slane Castle\, curated by Jenn Ellis and Matilda Liu\, and Factory Made at Green On Red Gallery\, Dublin. \nIn 2020 Martin’s sculpture\, Oak\, was installed at the International Criminal Court in The Hague\, a gift from the Irish Government to the court; a new permanent sculpture\, Barrel was installed in the grounds of the Irish Museum of Modern Art\, Dublin.  Also in 2020\, his large-scale photograph\,Chair\, was purchased by the National Gallery of Ireland. \nMartin is a member of Aosdana and is represented by Green On Red Gallery\, Dublin. \n

SUMMARY:William Blake: The age of Romantic Fantasy | Dublin by Dusk
DESCRIPTION:William Blake\, a visionary artist and poet\, was a defining force in Romanticism. His imaginative and unconventional works continue to inspire today. This exhibition\, curated by Tate in partnership with the National Gallery of Ireland\, presents a selection of Blake’s most iconic works of art\, alongside paintings and drawings by his contemporaries. \nBlake’s world was one of fantasy\, imagination\, and the ancient past\, filled with fantastical creatures and visions of the underworld\, expressed through a wide variety of media. By placing him in context – among the artists he admired and those he inspired – the exhibition offers insight into an era of extraordinary originality and innovation in late-eighteenth and early nineteenth-century art. Featuring over 100 works\, including by James Barry (1741–1806)\, Henry Fuseli (1741–1825)\, John Hamilton Mortimer (1740–1779)\, Thomas Rowlandson (1757–1827)\, and J.M.W. Turner (1775–1851)\, the show explores how artists responded to a time of revolution and transformation\, pushing the boundaries of their art into new imaginative territories. \nOrganised in collaboration with Tate. \nCurated by Anne Hodge\, Curator of Prints and Drawings at the National Gallery of Ireland and Alice Insley\, Curator of British Art c. 1730 – 1850 at Tate. \nThis exhibition is supported by The William Blake Giving Circle.  \nThe Gallery would like to thank the Department of Culture\, Communications and Sport for their ongoing support.

SUMMARY:Cut Flowers by Oisín Byrne
DESCRIPTION:SO Fine Art Editions are pleased to present Cut Flowers by Oisín Byrne\, an Irish artist\, writer and filmmaker based in London. This new series of screenprints continues his exploration of scale\, bold colour\, floral form\, gesture and the passing of time\, and will also open at Connolly\, London\, on 1 May 2026. \nMoving fluidly between painting\, film\, performance\, sound and text\, Byrne describes his studio practice as a dialogue between focused\, reflective work and instinctive mark-making\, often exploring the shifting boundaries between conscious thought and intuitive gesture. His studio itself reflects this split: upstairs is used for filming\, editing\, teaching and reading\, while downstairs is for painting and drawing – Byrne describes his process as a movement between states of mind. After sustained periods of research or concentration\, he returns to drawing with urgency\, driven to capture the immediacy of subjects before they shift or disappear.

SUMMARY:The Whiteheaded Boy
DESCRIPTION:“ – Glory be to God! Is it notions she has? – Aye\, notions. But they’re notions that cost me money!” \n\n\nThe table is set for Denis\, arriving home from Dublin where he’s studying Medicine at Trinity College – a source of enormous pride for his besotted mother and of great resentment to his five other siblings. \nBut when word comes that he may have failed his exams again\, the final straw breaks. Threats of deportation\, lawsuits\, bribes and counter-bribes escalate\, as the family twist the fate of their whiteheaded boy to suit themselves. Never mind about the girls. \nA smash hit when it premiered at the Abbey Theatre 110 years ago\, Lennox Robinson’s The Whiteheaded Boy is a raucous\, high-stakes tug-of-war between a generation who will do anything to keep their standing in the town and the young\, who just want to be free to do what they want to do. \nAward-winning director Annie Ryan re-imagines this bawdy and bold Irish classic with a contemporary eye and a sharp feminist wink to the past. Notions abound!

SUMMARY:The Magic Glasses | Dublin By Dusk
DESCRIPTION:The year is 1913\, but like a contemporary phone-addicted teenager\, Jaymoney Shanahan spends his days up in the loft staring into his magic glasses\, hearing strange music and seeing incredible visions. \nHis distraught parents finally call in the fabled Morgan Quille\, hoping he can cure this incurable of his wicked ways. Is Quille a genuine faith healer or a fake of a quack doctor? What will happen when a violent exorcism is attempted in this Kerry country kitchen? \nWith riotous humour\, language of astonishing richness\, and the highest of hi-jinx\, The Magic Glasses is a mini-masterpiece by this under-celebrated playwright\, a Kerry magician of singular genius\, George Fitzmaurice. \nDon’t miss the rare chance to see this glorious gem of a play.

SUMMARY:Comhghall Casey
DESCRIPTION:Solomon Fine Art is delighted to host an exhibition of new paintings by award-winning artist Comhghall Casey. In this much anticipated solo exhibition\, his first in four years\, Casey presents a new body of masterful studies in oil which observe in detail the extraordinary qualities of ordinary items. \n  \nCasey’s intimate and often nostalgic still-lives celebrate objects from everyday life\, ranging from blocks of cheese to beach toys which are singled out and meticulously observed. His compositions are universally simple\, where the object is placed centrally against a neutral background\, amplifying it’s presence and highlighting the artist’s skill and spectacular attention to detail. \n  \nBorn in 1976 Casey grew up in Omagh\, Co Tyrone before moving to Belfast to study fine art at the University of Ulster. In 2000 he moved to Dublin where he has since been living and working. \n  \nCasey has twice appeared on Sky television’s Portrait Artist of the Year competition. His self-portraits were shortlisted for the esteemed BP Portrait Awards in the UK in 2002\, 2013 and 2015 and subsequently hung in the National Portrait Gallery\, London\, the National Scottish Portrait Gallery\, Edinburgh and the Ulster Museum\, Belfast. His portraits have also been shortlisted for the Zurich (formerly Hennessy) Portrait Awards at the National Gallery of Ireland in 2014\, 2017\, 2019\, 2020 & 2023. Casey has exhibited regularly in the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition in London and has received numerous awards at the RHA and RUA Annual Exhibitions including the prestigious Hennessey Craig Scholarship. In 2015 An Post issued an edition of stamps featuring Casey’s toy paintings. In 2017 he was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Ulster Academy. \n  \nCasey’s work features in many notable collections including the National Self Portrait Collection\, The Ulster Museum\, The Arts Council of Northern Ireland and The Office of Public Works.

SUMMARY:Beavertown Presents: Soundtrack Stories featuring Kean Kavanagh & Minikimono
DESCRIPTION:Two nights. Two pubs. One microphone. Live music\, strange stories and Neck Oil in the heart of Dublin. \n\n\n\nBeavertown is bringing Soundtrack Stories to Dublin this June – a two-night celebration of live music\, storytelling and the strange magic that happens when a room full of cool people get together over a pint. \nInspired by Ireland’s rich pub culture\, we’re taking over Egan’s and The Globe\, where the crowd is every bit as important as the artists on stage. Expect live performances from SexyTadhg and Kean Kavanagh\, support from Minikimono\, and plenty of opportunities for stories to take on a life of their own. \nHosted by Bard of Beavertown Meg Reilly\, Soundtrack Stories flips the script by putting storytellers centre stage as the warm-up act\, setting the tone before the live music begins. \nPart gig\, part crowd storytelling experiment\, these are nights designed to be shared. We’ll bring the Neck Oil. You bring the stories. \n  \nFRIDAY 26 JUNE\nThe Globe\, Dublin 2 \nFeaturing Kean Kavanagh + Minikimono \n  \nDoors from 6PM \nStrictly 18+. \nPlease drink responsibly. \nT&Cs\nThis venue has limited capacity and entry is subject to capacity on the night. Duplicate ticket orders may be cancelled. Each ticket will include two complimentary half pints on Beavertown’s Neck Oil Session IPA.

SUMMARY:MELATON
DESCRIPTION:In the summer of 1997 a group of Dublin school friends came together to form a band inspired by the music that had been soundtracking their teenage years. \nAlthough\, why Jonathan Black\, Andrew Brennan\, Declan Garvey and Anthony Mooney – who were inspired to make music by Radiohead\, Smashing Pumpkins and Jeff Buckley chose the band name ‘Purple Haze’ – remains a mystery to this day. \nShortly after forming – a much-needed change of name and lead singer occurred and Melaton was born. \nLed by singer and multi-instrumentalist Luke Slott\, the five friends quickly realised that they could write their own songs and by 2001 were the centre of a major label bidding war\, with the band eventually signing to Sony UK. Much to the delight of the band members’ parents\, the bidding war coincided with the lead up to their final school exams\, with the Sony deal signed in May 2001\, weeks before their leaving certificate. \nShortly after www.melaton.ie was set up and a CD was promised to anyone who logged on that year. “We initially said we would do 2\,000 of them and we thought that would do us for the year\,” Luke remembers\, “but it ended up we had requests for over 7\,000. And we really did make them and send them all out.” \nMelaton went on to release two more EPs – ‘Falling Star’ and ‘Still Water’ and toured extensively throughout the UK and Ireland as well as playing support to Ian Brown\, Elbow and JJ72. At the time their sound was as “…early U2 shot through with the haunting impact that first made us treasure Jeff Buckley. It’s the complex\, ethereal grace of Radiohead with none of the emotional distance.” \nStints with producer Stephen Street (The Smiths\, Blur) at Townhouse Studios in London and with U2 engineer Richard Rainey at St. Catherine’s Court in Bath (the site of the fabled OK Computer recordings) failed to yield the more commercial sound being sought by the record label. Pressure mounted to write more radio friendly singles and by early 2004 Melaton had collapsed under the weight of corporate expectations and the compromising of their creative process. \nAsked why the band chose Sony UK’s offer above any others\, Andrew Brennan says\, “I think they were the only label that weren’t insisting we had to move to London”. \nOver twenty years later\, Melaton are delighted to announce that they have reformed to play a show in Dublin’s Whelan’s on 26th June 2026 in aid of the amazing work done by Focus Ireland.
