DESCRIPTION:14 Henrietta Street presents Teatime Talks a series of talks inspired by the history and people of 14 Henrietta Street. By listening and engaging with visitors\, historians\, experts\, local people\, former tenement residents and their families\, they continue to uncover\, record and respond to the 300 year story of 14 Henrietta Street. \n\nThe Plough and the Stars is one of the most celebrated (and most controversial) plays ever staged in the Abbey Theatre\, which has at times had as turbulent a history as the play itself. This talk by Historian in Residence Caitlin White marks the 75th anniversary of the fire that damaged the original building and explores Sean O’Casey’s Dublin masterpiece\, set in a Dublin tenement\, and its legacy in the Abbey.\n\nThis talk will take place in person on the 1st floor of the Museum and can be accessed via lift. With the arrival of a number of skilled Dutch graphic designers in Ireland in the mid-twentieth century\, depictions of Ireland and Irishness were forever changed. SUMMARY:After the Image: Collage Workshop | Dublin By Dusk
DESCRIPTION:In an age of infinite scrolling and endless image production\, what happens when we stop consuming images and begin entering into conversation with them? \nResponding to Afterimage: Photography in the Digital Age\, this workshop explores analogue collage as a practice of slow looking\, personal reflection and creative inquiry. \nWorking with found photographs\, participants will cut\, rearrange and recontextualise existing images. Rather than beginning with a fixed idea\, you will be encouraged to follow your instincts and discover meaning through the process of selecting\, placing and layering imagery. As unexpected themes\, memories and associations begin to emerge\, collage invites a different question: not simply “What do I want to make?” but “What is trying to reveal itself?” \nWorking by hand offers a way to interrupt the speed at which we usually encounter images. The tactile process of cutting and composing creates space to notice the photographs before us\, as well as our own patterns\, instincts and ways of seeing. \nThrough a series of guided prompts\, participants will explore symbolism\, composition and visual storytelling while creating an original collage to take home. \nThe workshop will consider collage as both an artistic practice and a method of inquiry: a way of thinking with images and uncovering meaning through making. \nNo previous artistic experience is necessary. All materials will be provided. Participants are also welcome to bring copies of personal photographs or printed imagery to incorporate into their collage.

Curated & hosted by Dublin writer Steve O’Toole. At each gathering\, storytellers\, and poets\, are joined by showcase musicians\, working to a pre-agreed theme. Thus\, delivering a continuous\, collaborative flow of original work. \nPlease note: This is a very limited ticketed event. \nSteve O’Toole\nA street stalking creative\, poet\, storyteller\, artist\, and the creative force behind The Write Stuff. Not one to sit on the fence\, Steve firmly wears both his heart & mind on his sleeve\, delivering forceful versed commentary by the page full. Originally performing in the mid 90’s as support to Irish writer ‘Pat Ingoldsby’. It was early 2023\, when Steve returned after a far too long hiatus. Since then\, he has gone on to read & perform at The International Literary Festival\, The Dublin Arts & Human Rights Festival\, The Bram Stoker Festival\, Culture Nights\, Craicly Stories\, and curate & host The Write Stuff gatherings at Chapters Bookstore\, and other Dublin city venues. \nLuke Clerkin\nAn award-winning singer songwriter from Tallaght whose music has taken him from major festivals like Electric Picnic\, Body & Soul\, and Stendhal to headline shows at iconic Irish venues including Whelan’s and The Workman’s Club. His music has been featured by outlets including Hot Press and RTÉ\, with airplay across Ireland and the UK. Following the critically acclaimed release of his debut album Orpheus in 2025\, Luke performed sold out shows in Dublin and Germany\, appeared at Electric Picnic and Regard Belfast\, and closed the year sharing the stage with Bono\, Glen Hansard and Imelda May at the famous Christmas Eve Busk. He is currently working on new material and exciting collaborations set for release throughout the second half of 2026. \nDanila\nAn Italian singer/songwriter based in Dublin. She started off as a singer\, then added the ukulele to put her own spin on covers. Now\, she writes songs about self-love\, self-acceptance\, all in a soft and honest package. \nSean Corrigan\nA sporty lad first and foremost\, who in recent years sought an alternative form of self-expression and found it through poetry and fashion. His poetry is written with the aim of creating and maintaining a rhythm more so than through as an outlet of impressive vocabulary\, as one can tell from this bio! A far cry from abstract poetry; will hit every nail on the head and use every cliche to create an image. Has spoken at events such as ‘Slip of the Tongue\,’ ‘Seanchoice\,’ ‘Sunflower Sessions\,’ and ‘Smithfield Creatives.’ \nThe James Joyce Centre is supported by the Department of Culture\, Communications\, and Sport.

Drawing on influences from Impressionism\, Graffiti and Street Art\, O’Flynn has developed a distinctive visual language that captures the atmosphere\, light and emotional resonance of fleeting experiences. His paintings invite viewers to reflect on the unseen qualities that shape our perception of the world. \nOriginally from Galway and now based in Dublin\, John O’Flynn’s works explore themes of landscape\, light\, introspection and the rhythms of everyday life. DESCRIPTION:Please join The James Joyce Centre for the launch of a new special issue and podcast series dedicated to the untold history of Ireland’s unmarried women. \n\n\n\n\nCelibacy in Irish Women’s Writing\, edited by Dr. Paul Fagan\, is an open-access Humanities special issue dedicated to less familiar feminist\, queer\, and activist versions of celibacy in Irish women’s movements and literature. Boasting new research from leading experts in Irish women’s writing\, the essays explore representations of unmarried and widowed women in writing by Elizabeth Bowen\, Kate O’Brien\, Mary Lavin\, Molly Keane\, Eva Gore-Booth\, Edna O’Brien\, and more\, in order to better understand the historical trajectories of the ‘female celibate’ as a political and cultural figure in Ireland. \nIn the accompanying podcast series Unmarried Sisters\, Dr Paul Fagan speaks to leading figures in Irish\, gender\, and sexuality studies to learn more about historical collaborations and the bonds formed between differently celibate Irish women—whether in friendships\, romantic relationships\, creative collaborations or forms of political and revolutionary organisation—and to explore celibacy’s imbrications with first-wave feminist politics\, patterns of queer kinship\, and Irish literary modernism. \nThe special collection and podcast will be launched by Prof. Katherine Ebury (incoming UCD James Joyce Chair)\, with additional remarks by the editor Dr. Paul Fagan (University of Vienna) and contributors Prof. Anne Fogarty (UCD)\, Prof. Maureen O’Connor (UCC)\, Dr. Deirdre Foley (TCD) and Dr. Fae McNamara (Teesside University). \nThe special issue and podcast series were made possible by the support of the Research Ireland project Celibacy in Irish Women’s Writing\, 1860s–1950s (GOIPD/2022/634). \nRefreshments will be provided. DESCRIPTION:David Costello will join us within EPIC to discuss Mark O’Neill’s book The Irish in Hong Kong\, a book that delves into the connection between Ireland and China\, and how our diaspora has had an influence on the development of Hong Kong. \nCopies of The Irish in Hong Kong by Mark O’Neill will be available to purchase on the night\, with a book signing following the event. \nTicket holders should arrive about 10 minutes before 5:30pm at the Visitor Information desk within chq. There they will be escorted to the event’s location. \nAbout the Book\nThe Irish have played an extraordinary – if little known – role in the construction and development of Hong Kong\, in government\, the army\, police\, judiciary\, finance and in civil society – schools\, hospitals\, churches and welfare institutions. Ireland provided nine Governors\, five Chief Justices\, two Chiefs of Police and one head of Special Branch. Also nuns who cured the city of tuberculosis and priests and ministers who founded high-quality schools that have transformed the lives of thousands of Hong Kong people. They are flourishing today and are the choice of many parents. In sport\, also\, the Irish have made a great contribution – racing\, the Rugby Sevens and\, most famously\, Siobhan Haughey\, the first Hong Kong athlete to win four Olympic medals. This is the first book to give a comprehensive and detailed account of this Irish history. \nAbout the Author\nMark O’Neill was born in London\, England\, the son of an Irish father and Scottish mother. He was educated at Marlborough College and New College\, Oxford. He worked in Washington\, DC\, Manchester and Belfast before coming to Hong Kong in 1978. In Belfast\, he covered the Troubles and learnt about his family and their history. He has lived in Asia ever since. He worked as a journalist for 30 years here\, in Taiwan\, India\, the PRC and Japan\, for Reuters\, SCMP and many other publications. Since 2006\, he has been writing books on Chinese\, Taiwan\, Hong Kong and Macau history and society. He has completed 21 in English\, four of them on Irish topics. Eight have been translated into traditional Chinese and three into simplified Chinese. DESCRIPTION:Discover bojagi\, a traditional Korean wrapping cloth reimagined for modern\, sustainable living as part of the Dublin by Dusk initative.\nRooted in centuries of cultural practice\, bojagi was historically used to wrap and protect objects\, symbolising care and good fortune. Today\, it offers a reusable and environmentally conscious alternative to disposable packaging. \nThis hands-on workshop introduces both the cultural heritage and contemporary applications of bojagi\, guiding participants through a series of practical wrapping techniques using a variety of textiles. You will learn how to adapt these methods for everyday use—from gift presentation to functional carrying. \nPlease bring a wine bottle or similar bottle to wrap during the workshop. Each participant will take home only the Bojagi cloth used to wrap their wine bottle \nBeginning 28th of May\, we are opened until 20:00 on the last Thursday of every month\, as part of “Dublin by Dusk”\, at the National Museum of Ireland\, Collins Barracks and Kildare Street. Feel free to drop in before the event and explore our open galleries. \n  \nThis event is a part of our Crafted Encounters series \nCrafted Encounters is our regular series of thoughtfully designed craft or experiential workshops inspired by the richness of our collections. SUMMARY:Oral Histories of survivors of Ireland’s institutions in the North of England
DESCRIPTION:20th century Ireland was marked by institutionalisation and emigration. Many survivors experienced both fates. Since 2025\, Fréa Renewing Roots have been collecting oral histories of survivors who moved to the north of England. They give their testimonies both on the institutions and their subsequent lives. The project also works with children of survivors who talk about the impact of inter-generational trauma. ‘This event amplifies some of the first-hand accounts of new lives being set up in England by sharing some of the stories collected through the oral history project the first time these oral histories are being presented in Ireland\, so that more people are aware of this important but untold part of Irish history. \nSeminar Highlights\n\nTo enable people in Ireland to hear\, first hand\, the wide-ranging experiences of those survivors who emigrated.\nTo demonstrate the range of experiences that survivors lived beyond Ireland.\nTo present and amplify the voices of survivors – to enable them to tell their stories

SUMMARY:From Dublin to Nairobi: A Lecture by Sahara Abdi
DESCRIPTION:James Joyce’s Ulysses is often celebrated as a European modernist masterpiece. Reading it from a postcolonial perspective reveals resonances with the experience of colonial and postcolonial Kenya. Dublin\, under British rule was not only politically constrained but culturally subdued. Joyce dramatizes these pressures through the lives of Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom. These texts speak to similar forms of marginalization and linguistic domination experienced in Africa. \nNgũgĩ wa Thiong’o\, one of Kenya’s most important writers offers a lens for reading these resonances. His central argument in Decolonising the Mind is that colonial language is a tool of domination. “The domination of a people’s language by the language of the colonising nations was crucial to the domination of the mental universe of the colonised.” \nSeparated by time\, both Joyce and Ngugi are reconstructing cultural memory under colonial pressure and they represent two colonial experiences responding differently to same imperial language. \nThis lecture juxtaposes Joyce and Ngugi to explore how both writers represent colonial subjectivity\, the politics of language\, and the dignity of ordinary life\, despite their different historical and geographical contexts. \nSahara Abdi is writer\, a literacy advocate and the founder of Northern Voice Trust\, a literacy organization dedicated to fostering reading\, writing\, and creative expression in Northern Kenya. Through her writing\, she amplifies the stories and identities of children from Northern Kenya. Her work blends storytelling and advocacy to promote literacy and representation for young readers across marginalized communities. She champions storytelling as a powerful tool for identity\, belonging and social change. \nThe lecture is supported by the Embassy of Ireland\, Kenya.
