Hailed by The Washington Post as one of “23 composers to watch in 2023\,” Finola is an Irish composer currently living in Paris\, where she is a Fellow at Columbia University’s Institute for Ideas and Imagination. Catherine is a saxophonist living in New Mexico; she has been called a “virtuosic firebrand\,” by The Brooklyn Rail and “a revelation\,” by The Jazz Magazine. \nIn an opening set of improvisation\, Catherine will perform some of her own compositions and will be joined by violist Joanna Mattrey.

DESCRIPTION:Literally translated as ‘Schubert journey’ the National Concert Hall presents ‘Schubertreise’. Dublin-born bass-baritone\, Conor Biggs\, and Belgian pianist\, Michel Stas\, have taken on the monumental challenge of performing the complete songs of Schubert in this thirty-seven part series taking place over fifteen years. \nThe final instalment in the series\, Winterreise is commonly acknowledged to be Schubert’s vocal masterpiece. The theme of love rejected and the alienation of the protagonist run through the cycle with unrelenting gloom\, but the overall effect on the listener is not to feel depressed\, but rather to wonder at Schubert’s compassion for the young man as he sets out on his journey\, a journey which ends in insanity (the Romantic Movement took to heart the idea that the romantic individual often imposed a self-exile\, as for example Byron’s Childe Harold).The twenty four relatively short songs (two sets of twelve each\, composed at six month’s interval) owe much to some of the earlier songs in the composer’s career\, but it is their cumulative effect\, devoid of sentimentality\, which makes the cycle so memorable\, and such a fitting close to Schubertreise. \nFifteen years in the making\, join us as we bring to a close the magnificent feat of musicianship that is Conor Biggs’ and Michel Stas’ Schubertreise.

SUMMARY:Perspectives: The Köln Concert
DESCRIPTION:Two inspired pianists from different musical spheres\, Thomas Enhco and Maki Namekawa\, together tackle Keith Jarrett’s legendary album The Köln Concert (ECM\, 1975)\, rendering the incredible luminance of its music freely oscillating between jazz and classical. Two artists and two approaches: Maki Namekawa will play note for note the first and last parts\, while Thomas Enhco will improvise around the central part.\nThe classically trained Namekawa has endeavoured to faithfully reproduce the transcription of the concert from the recording. Jazz pianist Enhco\, on the other hand\, offers a new improvisation based on the original melodic framework. In doing so\, the two pianists will present a reinvented work that aims to perpetuate the atmosphere of the now iconic concert. \nMaki Namekawa\, one of the leading pianists of her generation\, has earned a unique reputation for her commitment to four centuries of great piano music with a concert repertory that is broad\, colourful\, and ambitious\, ranging from neglected masterpieces by J.S. Bach\, Mendelssohn\, Berg\, and Guarnieri to new works by many of today’s leading composers. The impressive list of music especially written for her includes sonatas by Philip Glass and Joe Hisaishi\, headlining a list of first performances of music by Elliot Goldenthal\, Keith Jarrett\, Arvo Pärt\, Chen Yi\, and Benjamin Yusupov. Recently she has been particularly in demand for programmes featuring Glass‘ complete Piano Etudes\, which she premiered together with the composer in 2013\, Jarrett‘s legendary The Köln Concert\, and Chick Corea’s evocative Children’s Songs. \nThomas Enhco\, born in Paris in 1988\, is a pianist and composer in jazz and classical music. He began classical training on the violin and piano as a child and studied formally at the CMDL and the Paris National Conservatory. Since then\, he has achieved international recognition\, recording for labels Verve\, Deutsche Grammophon and Sony Music and performing 100 concerts per year around the world. He has performed at the Jazz Festivals of Tokyo\, Montréal\, Vienne\, Montreux\, Istanbul\, North Sea\, New York and classical venues such as Philharmonie de Paris\, Bordeaux Opéra\, Brussels Flagey\, Salzburg Mozarteum\, Théâtre du Châtelet.

Up-and-coming mezzo soprano\, Aebh Kelly\, presents ‘Frühlingsglaube’ – Faith in Spring – a concert full of heartbreak and hope\, endings and renewal\, and bursting at the seams with natural imagery and symbolism. The programme begins with three Schubert Lieder depicting love through springtime. This idea is later explored in Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen\, often translated as ‘Songs of a Wayfarer’. These songs are full of emotional turmoil; anger\, anguish and anxiety alongside love\, sorrow\, and a particular kind of peace that is found under a lime tree in the final movement. In between\, we are transported over water with Fauré’s Cinq Mélodies “de Venise” (Five Melodies of Venice) and Elgar’s Sea Pictures both depicting passion\, distress\, and ultimately\, contentment through watery ideas of flowing\, swimming\, and floating. Accompanied by vocal coach and acclaimed pianist\, Dearbhla Collins\, Aebh Kelly finishes the concert on a light note with four folksongs from Britain and Ireland. \nDublin born mezzo-soprano Aebh Kelly is currently based at the Staatsoper Hamburg as a member of the International Opera Studio where\, in 2025/26 she will make numerous role debuts. In February 2026 Aebh makes her role and house debut as Nancy Tang in John Adam’s Nixon in China at the Opéra national de Paris. In 2020 Aebh became the youngest ever member of the Irish National Opera Studio. More recently she returned to INO and made her role debut as Flora in Verdi’s La Traviata. Aebh was awarded second prize at the Veronica Dunne International Singing Competition 2022 as well as the Dublin Song Series Prize and the Dermot Troy Prize. Commencing in 2021\, Aebh became a Mascarade Emerging Artist in Florence\, Italy where her place was generously sponsored by Maria Manetti-Shrem. In the summer of 2024 Aebh attended the prestigious Georg Solti Accademia as well as making her role debut as Dido in Dido & Aeneas in\, a co-production with Opera Collective Ireland and Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg. \nShe is accompanied by Dearbhla Collins\, one of Ireland’s finest pianists. Dearbhla is most well known as a song pianist and performs recitals with singers such as Benjamin Appl\, Patricia Bardon and Tara Erraught. She also regularly works with Dame Ann Murray and Brigitte Fassbaender. As well as being vocal coach at the RIAM\, she has recently been appointed Assistant Head of Music at the National Opera Studio\, London. Dearbhla has curated the three song recitals as part of this chamber music series.

Beginning with Beethoven’s ‘Spring’ Sonata and finishing with William Wallace’s famous\, The Last Rose of Summer\, this programme promises colour\, light\, hope\, and joy as we move through the seasons. In between\, Keszei introduces us to Undine\, the cheeky water spirit in search of true love\, in Carl Reinecke’s programmatic interpretation of the German Romantic tale by Friedrich de la Motte Fouque. Finally\, we are reminded of the history that lives and breathes in nature with the world premiere of Gráinne Mulvey’s ‘Fothrach’\, meaning ‘ruin’ – a piece reflecting the ruins of Tara\, the central seat of the high kings of Ireland\, and the plunder that took place there. \nViolinist David Tobin has developed a reputation as one of Ireland’s leading classical musicians. He is currently based in Berlin and tours internationally as a violin soloist\, chamber musician\, conductor and concertmaster. \nTobin has performed as soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra Ireland\, RTÉ Concert Orchestra\, Sinfonieorchester Aachen and the New York Concerti Sinfonietta in Carnegie Hall. He has also played as concertmaster of Deutsche Oper Berlin\, National Symphony Orchestra Ireland\, European Union Youth Orchestra and Cologne Chamber Orchestra and as co-leader with the Budapest Festival Orchestra under Iván Fischer and West-Eastern Divan with Daniel Barenboim. David Tobin made his Carnegie Hall conducting debut in New York last year and plays regularly with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. \nAndreas Ioannides\, a Lecturer in Piano and Chamber Music at TU Dublin Conservatoire\, has collaborated with esteemed artists including John Sharp\, Joseph Swensen\, Atar Arad\, Mark Kaplan\, Peter Stumpf\, the Pacifica and Ariel quartets. Ioannides is also prizewinner of the BNDES International Piano Competition in Rio de Janeiro and the Hastings International Piano Competition in the UK and\, more recently\, he turned his attention to recording projects including a 2-disc album released by NAXOS in honour of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth. He holds a Doctor of Music degree from Indiana University\, mentored by legendary pianist Menahem Pressler. \nJohanna Keszei has worked with great conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle\, Christian Thielemann and Daniel Barenboim\, performing with world-leading orchestras like Leipzig Gewandhaus\, Konzerthaus Berlin and Deutsche Oper. She has performed chamber music with Carolin Widmann in the Apollo Hall of Berlin’s State Opera House and is 1st Prizewinner of the prestigious Kuhlau International Flute Competition\, Dutch International Flute Competition and the Flautiada International Flute Contest. Le Papillon \nFour Seasons Chamber Music Series: inviting audiences on a journey through the seasons\, with music exploring themes of light and shadow\, water and ice\, and the passing of time. \nIn this concert\, Polish soprano Magdalena Lucjan reminds us of the stillness of night\, the power of dreams\, and the depth of darkness. An exploration of life and death\, the programme begins with Schubert Lieder depicting vast landscapes\, and great dark skies\, followed by three Sibelius songs about stars\, stillness\, and the cold\, frozen North. The first half concludes with Alben Berg’s Sieben frühe Lieder (Seven Early Songs)\, a song cycle which moves from eerie darkness in the Schoenberg-esque whole-tone harmonies of ‘Nacht’ (Night)\, to a passionate climax in ‘Sommertage’ (Summer Days). The second half begins with Korngold’s Unvergänglichkeit (The Eternal)\, a work depicting renewal and rebirth. This was supposedly written in 1933\, just before the composer fled from Europe and settled in the US. His naturally filmic compositional style is evident here in music that predates his many successful Hollywood scores. This performance finishes with Lutosławski’s Surrealist setting of Robert Desnos’ Chantefleurs et chantefables. Desnos wrote these poems for the children of his friends\, and Lutosławski reflects this in his whimsical\, humour-filled settings of Desnos’ fantastical dreamland. \nPolish soprano Magdalena Lucjan is currently a member of the ensemble at the Semperoper Dresden. A highly accomplished vocalist\, Magdalena is the first prize winnder of the Neue Stimmen Competition in Gütersloh (2024) and Karol Szymanowski International Music Competition in Katowice (2023). From 2022 to 2024 Magdalena was a member of the Opera Academy at the Polish National Opera in Warsaw\, where she worked regularly with Olga Pasiecznik\, Izabela Klosinska and Edith Wiens. In 2025\, she made her debut at the Cologne Philharmonie and Aalto-Musiktheater Essen with the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne under Manfred Honeck in the New Year’s concert Strauss & Puccini. In the 2025/26 season she will make role debuts as Pamina (Die Zauberflöte)\, Frasquita (Carmen)\, Sacerdotessa (Aida) and a Flowermaiden in Parsifal\, among other roles. \nMagdalena is accompanied today by Dearbhla Collins\, one of Ireland’s finest pianists. She is most well known as a song pianist and performs recitals with singers such as Benjamin Appl\, Patricia Bardon and Tara Erraught. She also regularly works with Dame Ann Murray and Brigitte Fassbaender. As well as being vocal coach at the RIAM\, she has recently been appointed Assistant Head of Music at the National Opera Studio\, London. DESCRIPTION:James Holden & Warclaw Zimpel  \nHomebeat are delighted to present the wonderful collaboration between groundbreaking UK electronic producer James Holden and Polish clarinettist Warclaw Zimpel as they form Holden & Zimpel: a collaborative alliance wherein these two versatile modern composers might explore their deepest improvisational urges in an intimate setting\, to strikingly lush\, hypnotic and deeply emotive effect. \nTwo like-minded masters of their instrument come together in an in-the-moment lyrical conversation between alto clarinet and modular synth\, cementing the joyful convergence of their disparate musical journeys in an explosion of raw musical creativity in its most primal form. \nLong established in their own respective fields of electronica and jazz\, Holden & Zimpel’s paths would first cross at the 2018 edition of The Hague’s Rewire Festival\, where mutual feelings of respect drove the pair to seek each other out for an introduction. Their first recordings happened later that year in Holden’s London studio\, during four snatched days of between-shows downtime for Waclaw\, where the pair committed to laying down one composition a day to gradually assemble a four track EP of deliciously krauty in-the-moment improvisations. The resulting richly textured Long Weekend EP pitted Holden’s handmade modular synth rig against Zimpel’s multifariously expressive alto clarinet\, judiciously supplemented by organ\, voice\, assorted percussion and (on Tuesday & Wednesday) the Balearic-tinged guitar playing of Zimpel’s long-time collaborator Jakub Ziolek\, making for an immersive and transcendent lost weekend of deep listening. \nWith this initial release emerging on the eve of the pandemic\, the duo’s first scheduled live performances across Europe had to be squeezed in around lockdowns\, where the intimate\, all-enveloping warmth of their electro-acoustic explorations proved to be a good fit for the fully seated socially-distanced concert settings which proliferated as the world began to open back up. And whenever Waclaw found himself with a day off in London the experiments would continue in Holden’s studio\, nudging the pair inevitably towards their next release: the blissful escapism of 2025’s lush “The Universe Will Take Care Of You” album. Embracing a similar playful\, experimental approach to that of their Krautrock forefathers\, the new album sees both virtuosos encouraged and empowered to reach out beyond the instruments with which they made their name. Thus\, Holden supplements his bespoke computer and modular synth systems with his long-neglected childhood violin and his more recently cobbled together collection of hand percussion\, whilst on some songs Zimpel forgoes his alto clarinet altogether in favour of electric piano\, organ\, lap steel guitar\, airless harmonium and the Indian twin pipe algoza flute. \nUltimately it is around a shared love of all things hypnotic and trancey where Holden and Zimpel’s paths converge. Trance is the common thread which runs through their musical predilections\, as heard in traditional folk forms the world over\, twentieth century minimalism\, the Krautrock experiments of the seventies\, electronic dance music and improvised jazz alike\, and their music exists at the point where all of this good stuff collides.
