SUMMARY:COLAPALOOZA
DESCRIPTION:Mike got spiked\, Cousin It and The “Friends” Ensemble play quality music to raise money for our friend Colin. \n\n\n\n\nThe Grand Social\, Dublin | Friday\, July 24\, 2026 \nDoors 7:00 PM | Tickets €20 \nLife has a cruel way of picking the wrong targets. Recently\, our dear friend Colin Howell was diagnosed with ALS. \nFor those who know him\, Colin is a “giant” in every sense—not just in stature\, but in spirit\, humour\, and a level of kindness that is frankly over-the-top. He’s the man who always has your back and the person who makes every room brighter. Now\, he is facing the fight of his life. Tasks we all take for granted—a trip to the shops or a morning shower—are becoming increasingly difficult. \nTo understand why we’re doing this\, you have to go back to Carrickmacross in the early 90s. While the rest of us were struggling to tune our guitars\, Idle Mind (led by the indefatigable Howell brothers\, Colin and Gary) was busy blowing the doors off local pubs. Watching them rip through Helmet and Therapy? covers was a religious experience. \nLet’s be honest: without the influence and unending encouragement of the Howell brothers\, there would be no Cousin It\, and by extension\, no Mike Got Spiked. Whether the world would have been a quieter\, more peaceful place without our collective noise is a debate for another day—but the fact remains: Colin is the reason we play. \nMusic brought us together and paved the way for lifelong friendships. Now it’s the only way we know how to fight back. With the blessing of the Howell family\, we are staging a massive night of music to raise the funds Colin needs for the “new normal” ahead. The lineup features: \nMike Got Spiked (Full Set) \nCousin It (Full Set) \nThe “Friends” Ensemble (A special set of covers and guest appearances) \nWhether you crashed at his home in Carrick\, shared a laugh in Dublin\, or had an adventure together in Thailand\, Germany\, or the States—we need you. Tickets priced at €20 are on sale now. \nEvery penny goes directly to Colin’s care. If you can’t make it\, buy a ticket anyway. If you can make it\, bring someone who hasn’t had the pleasure of meeting Colin yet. The man himself plans to be there to enjoy the night with us all. Let’s show this disease that while it may be “incurable\,” it’s got nothing on the community Colin Howell helped to build. \nSee you in Dublin this July. \n— Mike Got Spiked\, Cousin It\, & Friends

SUMMARY:Pat Metheny - Side-Eye III+
DESCRIPTION:Pat Metheny Guitars\nJoe Dyson Drums\nChris Fishman Piano/Keyboards\nJermaine Paul Bass\nLeonard Patton Percussion/Vocal \nThe acclaimed jazz musician returns to NCH with the latest iteration of his celebrated project\, Side-Eye III+. \nSide-Eye III+ showcases Pat Metheny’s enduring dedication to mentoring the next generation of jazz innovators while exploring fresh musical territories. \n  \n\n\n\nPat Metheny was born in Lee’s Summit\, MO on August 12\, 1954\, into a musical family. Starting on trumpet at the age of 8\, Metheny switched to guitar at age 12. By the age of 15\, he was working regularly with the best jazz musicians in Kansas City\, receiving valuable on-the- bandstand experience at an unusually young age. Metheny first burst onto the international jazz scene in 1974. Over the course of his three-year stint with vibraphone great Gary Burton\, the young Missouri native already displayed his soon-to-become trademarked playing style\, which blended the loose and flexible articulation customarily reserved for horn players with an advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibility: a way of playing and improvising that was modern in conception but grounded deeply in the jazz tradition of melody\, swing\, and the blues. With the release of his first album\, Bright Size Life (1975)\, he reinvented the traditional “jazz guitar” sound for a new generation of players. Throughout his career\, Pat Metheny has continued to redefine the genre by utilizing new technology and constantly working to evolve the improvisational and sonic potential of his instrument. \nMetheny’s versatility is nearly without peer on any instrument. Over the years\, he has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Reich to Ornette Coleman to Herbie Hancock to Jim Hall to Milton Nascimento to David Bowie. Metheny’s body of work includes compositions for solo guitar\, small ensembles\, electric and acoustic instruments\, large orchestras\, and ballet pieces and even the robotic instruments of his Orchestrion project\, while always sidestepping the limits of any one genre. \nAs well as being an accomplished musician\, Metheny has also participated in the academic arena as a music educator. At 18\, he was the youngest teacher ever at the University of Miami. At 19\, he became the youngest teacher ever at the Berklee College of Music\, where he also received an honorary doctorate more than twenty years later\, in 1996. He has also taught music workshops all over the world\, from the Dutch Royal Conservatory to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz to clinics in Asia and South America. He has also been a true musical pioneer in the realm of electronic music and was one of the very first jazz musicians to treat the synthesizer as a serious musical instrument. Years before the invention of MIDI technology\, Metheny was using the Synclavier as a composing tool. He also has been instrumental in the development of several new kinds of guitars such as the soprano acoustic guitar\, the 42-string Pikasso guitar\, Ibanez’s PM series jazz guitars\, and a variety of other custom instruments. \nIt is one thing to attain popularity as a musician\, but it is another to receive the kind of acclaim Metheny has garnered from critics and peers. Over the years\, he has won countless polls as “Best Jazz Guitarist” and awards\, including three gold records for (Still Life) Talking\, Letter from Home\, and Secret Story. He has also won 20 Grammy Awards spread out over a variety of different categories including Best Rock Instrumental\, Best Contemporary Jazz Recording\, Best Jazz Instrumental Solo\, Best Instrumental Composition at one point winning seven consecutive Grammys for seven consecutive albums. In 2015 he was inducted into the DownBeat Hall of Fame\, becoming only the fourth guitarist to be included (along with Django Reinhardt\, Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery) and its youngest member. In 2018\, he was named an NEA Jazz Master\, the nation’s highest honor in jazz\, awarded to the recipients “for their lifetime achievements and exceptional contributions to the advancement of jazz.” Metheny has spent much of his life on tour\, often doing more than 100 shows a year since becoming a bandleader in the 70’s. \nAt the time of this writing\, he continues to be one of the brightest stars of the jazz community\, dedicating time to both his own projects and those of emerging artists and established veterans alike\, helping them to reach their audience as well as realizing their own artistic visions. \nPresented by the NCH

SUMMARY:Imelda May – Raised on Songs & Stories
DESCRIPTION:After the sell-out success of her current tour\, Raised on Songs & Stories\, globally revered Irish artist Imelda May has announced additional summer dates. She returns to Dublin’s Vicar Street on June 9th and 10th. \nThis unique series of intimate evenings will feature new stripped back versions of her wide discography and favourite songs\, integrated with her famed poetry & storytelling. \nImelda says: “I’m coming to you soon! 18 nights of an Irish tour. It’ll be an evening of songs\, poems\, stories\, joy and beauty. This idea evolved naturally over the last couple of years. You see\, when I write\, produce and release an album I get so excited to perform the songs live that I fizz up and plan and rehearse gigs with such enthusiasm that I’m like a little thrilled whirlwind but too often I leave room for little else. I work out which songs will flow best into another to create the vibe desired that I sometimes don’t leave much space for the unknown which is where a different magic lies. This space is the place where I exist and love most\, it’s where I write and create. So it feels right to stay there a while. To have a gig where someone might ask for a song I haven’t visited in a while and I think ‘yeah let’s give it a go’\, or where I can tell you the stories behind the songs and how I ended up working with some of the people I’ve worked with so far. Not a ‘show’ this will be a shared night of what music\, art\, connection and creativity means to me\, with you.”

SUMMARY:Stella Sings Ella: A Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald
DESCRIPTION:Ella Fitzgerald is probably the most beloved jazz singer of all time\, with hits like Manhattan\, Summertime\, Bewitched and Lady is a Tramp. \nAmassing 13 Grammy Awards and 40 million albums sales over an astounding 60-plus year career\, Ella could effortlessly cross over between sultry ballads\, intricate jazz arrangements and light pop tunes\, and could imitate any instrument of the orchestra. Born in 1917\, Ella worked with all the greats including Ellington\, Basie\, Sinatra\, Gillespie\, Armstrong (or perhaps we should say they worked with her!) and she packed out venues worldwide during her career\, including Dublin’s Adelphi Theatre in 1964 and the Cork Jazz Festival in 1982. Her greatest legacy is probably the Songbook Series\, recorded between 1956 and 1981\, considered a cornerstone of 20th century recorded popular music\, representing some of the finest interpretations of the greater part of the musical canon known as the Great American Songbook.

SUMMARY:Marcos Valle
DESCRIPTION:“Bossa nova pioneer” Resident Advisor “Rio beach boogie legend” The Vinyl Factory \n“One of the most important and popular performers in the history of Brazilian pop” All Music \nFrom samba & bossa to psychedelic MPB & beach boogie\, Marcos Valle is one the most important composers\, arrangers\, writers and performers in Brazil’s history. There are not many artists in any era in recorded music history that can boast a career as stylistically varied as Marcos’ – let alone the fact he has maintained quality consistent throughout a storied six decade career. The renaissance man of Brazilian pop has worked with Leon Ware\, Sarah Vaughan\, and Chicago; seen his music sampled by Jay Z\, Kanye West\, Childish Gambino\, Madlib\, and Kaytranada; had his songs recorded by the likes of Frank Sinatra\, Bebel Gilberto – even Emma Bunton of The Spice Girls once took on his classic ‘Os Grilos (The Crickets Sing For Anamaria)’. \nOne of the second-wave of early bossa nova composers\, following in the footsteps of João Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim\, Valle rose to prominence in the early 60s following the release of his now world famous bossa nova standard ‘Samba de Verao (Summer Samba)’. Written with his brother and long-standing songwriting partner Paulo-Sergio as a tribute to the joys of life as a Rio surfer\, it’s up there with ‘The Girl From Ipanema’ as one of the most universally recognisable Brazilian songs. \nSeeking reinvention in the 1970s after the bossa nova sensation had died down\, Marcos developed a more refined\, jazzier\, and more psychedelic MPB sound which characterized a string of his finest and most sought after albums: Marcos Valle (1970)\, Garra (1971)\, Vento Sul (1972)\, and Previsao Do Tempo (1974). In the midst of these masterpieces he was writing and recording music for film and television (including Brazilian Sesame Street!): it was through this line of work he met the trio who would go on to be known as Azymuth\, naming themselves after one of Valle’s songs from the soundtrack to O Fabuloso Fittipaldi (1973) \nAs the 70s drew to a close Marcos started a hugely successful partnership with the renowned US producer and singer-songwriter Leon Ware\, together they wrote a string of US soul cult classics like ‘Rocking You Eternally’ and ‘Baby Don’t Stop Me’. Marcos would go on to record his own Brazilianised versions on Vontade De Rever Você (1981). Ware would then join forces once again with Marcos a couple of years later for what is one of his most enduring hits (partly thanks to today’s Youtube & Spotify algorithms!)\, the workout-boogie monster ‘Estrelar’. \nMoving into the 90s\, Valle became somewhat disenfranchised with the Brazilian music market and stepped away to focus again on composing for film & TV. But over in the UK and Europe a newfound cult status was brewing thanks to flourishing music subcultures like acid-jazz\, jazz-dance\, and rare groove\, along with crate- digger culture that unified these inter-connected scenes. After meeting Far Out Recordings’ Joe Davis at London’s Jazz Cafe while on tour in 1995\, the pair hit it off and started what became a near 25 year (and counting) partnership\, beginning with the release of Nova Bossa Nova in 1998. Celebrating his 80th Birthday year\, Marcos Valle returns to Europe in 2023 coincide with a celebratory 20th anniversary reissue of his long out-of -print 2003 modern classic Contrasts\, home to the aptly titled ‘Parabens’\, which translating directly as “Congratulations” is what Brazilins say to wish someone a happy birthday.

SUMMARY:DUENDITA
DESCRIPTION:Foggy Notions presents the Irish debut of duendita \nWhat the press is saying about duendita: \n“fragility meets pugnacity” The New York Times \n“warm soul\, and great emotional depth.” Pitchfork \n“a voice that seems to defy the laws of this realm” Teen Vogue \n“inspiring the type of warm\, calming introspection that makes you appreciate everything around you” Alternative Press \n“duendita crafts music that heals” The FADER a strong desire to survive \nNew York City’s duendita released a strong desire to survive via 10k in April 2025. The 10-track project embeds the listener into duendita’s spellbinding realm and follows the lauded EP the mind is a miracle released in 2024. \na strong desire to survive was born from duendita’s transformative experience during their first extended trip to Berlin where they first met longtime collaborators Noah Becker and Anton Remy. “We would jam all the time at Baketown\, our recording studio and art space in Schoenberg. It was an era where I’d write on their beats or at the piano\, and I couldn’t stop writing about the pain\,” they share\, “all these bangers came out about how badly I wanted to live and overcome it all.” a strong desire to survive includes the previously shared track “baby teeth\,” which includes a sample of 9 vocalists\, singing in harmony as a choir – all recorded in duendita’s bedroom\, along with the track “cutie.” The upcoming project’s visual direction is equally as poignant as its musical heart. duendita enlisted friend and artist Kiyomi Taylor to create the cover art\, which features an image of a deep-sea creature who has adapted to survive in the most grotesque way. “She’s grown long nails\, gills\, scales\, and killer teeth\, just to survive. At first glance\, the man in the image looks like her next meal\, but in reality\, she wishes she could hold someone without scratching or hurting them\,” duendita explains. “This image mirrors the themes of the project – survival\, transformation\, and the struggle to love and be loved.” \nduendita is a band from Queens\, New York. They write and produce their own music\, imbuing it with a reverence for their ancestry\, community\, and faith. Anchored by achy\, bass-coated tones and mix of jazz\, piano\, soul and R&B\, duendita’s music is evocative of the complexities and sentimentality of the human experience. Flowing in various shapes and formations\, duendita is a living collaborative project made with family and friends across mediums and cities.

SUMMARY:QOW TRIO -The Rule of Three Album Tour
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the return of the generation-spanning powerhouse QOW Trio as they launch their fearless third album\, The Rule of Three. \n\n\n\n\nThree is the magic number”. Join us for an evening with QOW Trio\, a unique ensemble that bridges the gap between jazz legends and the new vanguard. Their latest work\, The Rule of Three\, takes the deep tradition of the classic piano-less tenor trio—steeped in melody and swing—and pushes it into the adventurous “uncharted hinterlands” of free improvisation. \nFrom the influences of Sonny Rollins and Duke Ellington to the fierce energy of Albert Ayler and even themes from classic cowboy movies\, this performance promises “a surprise at every turn\,” delivered with total sincerity and a driving desire to bring the audience along for the ride. \nSpike Wells (Drums): A true legend of British jazz. Celebrating his 80th birthday and the 65th year of an extraordinary career\, Spike has provided the beat for icons like Tubby Hayes\, Stan Getz\, and Roland Kirk. He was even a student of the great Philly Joe Jones. \nRiley Stone-Lonergan (Tenor Saxophone): Hailing from Galway\, Ireland\, Riley is a Yamaha Jazz Scholar and a rising star on the London scene. His “boundless creative imagination” and stimulating original compositions are the heart of the trio’s modern sound. \nEddie Myer (Bass): Representing the diversity of “Gen X\,” Eddie provides the “heavy gut-string” foundation. A staple of the Brighton jazz scene and director of the New Generation Jazz project\, he brings a big-toned\, swinging presence inspired by the likes of Richard Davis and Henry Grimes. \nCelebrate the return of the generation-spanning powerhouse QOW Trio as they launch their fearless third album\, The Rule of Three. \n\n\n\n\nThe Music\nExpect a setlist that flows seamlessly through: \n\nOriginals: Such as the confident swagger of the title track “The Rule of Three”.\nReimagined Classics: A “woozy waltz” rendition of Strayhorn’s Lush Life.\nWild Cards: The unpredictable\, “tag-team” improvisation of Kurt Angle and the haunting energy of Ayler’s Ghosts.

SUMMARY:SPAFFORD CAMPBELL
DESCRIPTION:Spafford Campbell are twenty-something mould-breakers\, fiddle player Owen Spafford and guitarist Louis Campbell. The two first met as teenagers playing traditional music. The connection\, they say\, was immediate. The duo Spafford Campbell began playing live in 2018\, prompting double takes with their delicacy\, dynamism and seemingly telepathic exchanges\, with the startling intimacy of musical conversations nurtured in improv-led writing sessions. \nTheir latest album Tomorrow Held is a visionary body of eight largely instrumental tracks that hold space\, resolve into mystery\, that fold in elements of jazz\, post-rock and chamber classical music while raiding the folk music toolbox. Call it what you want: post-folk. Trad-noir. Folk nihilism. Then know that Spafford Campbell are blazing a trail that erases genre—and finds gold in the embers. While redolent of Talk Talk’s moody\, experimental 1988 opus Spirit of Eden\, and riven with a Bon Iver-ish sense of transcendence\, Tomorrow Held is a work of bold singularity. A whole greater than the sum of its parts—parts that include effects pedals\, ambient cassette loops\, flashes of electric guitar\, electronic processing on fiddle and impressionistic accompaniment. \n“Mingling traditional tunes with influences from minimalism\, post-rock and jazz\, they shift moods exquisitely.” The Guardian – 10 best folk albums of 2025 \n“This is a fusing of the traditional and the futuristic that is quietly groundbreaking\, and beguiling with it.” ★★★★ The Times — albums of the year so far 2025 \n“An intense\, almost subliminal drama you want to turn up to 11.” ★★★★★ The Arts Desk — Album of the Year 2025 \n“England’s finest and most innovative instrumental duo.” ★★★★★ Songlines — Top of the World \n“Their ever-shifting time-lapse textures evoke a strangely unsettling beauty.” MOJO \nNPR Music — Best albums of the Week \nFolk Album of the Year Award 2025 Nominee

SUMMARY:Perspectives: Makaya McCraven
DESCRIPTION:After celebrating the 10th anniversary of his groundbreaking album In the Moment\, Makaya McCraven continues to push the boundaries of what we call jazz – inviting you on a journey through time\, space\, and culture. With his latest album\, In These Times – the result of over seven years of relentless work – he presents a fusion of improvisation\, innovative rhythms\, and deep cultural references. \nOften described as a “cultural synthesizer\,” McCraven believes that the term “jazz” is simply not enough to capture the musical phenomenon he creates. As The New York Times has noted\, “McCraven has quietly become one of the best arguments for jazz’s vitality.” \nBetween August and October 2025\, Makaya McCraven has simultaneously released four new EPs titled Techno Logic\, PopUp Shop\, Hidden Out!\, and The People’s Mixtape. All four EPs were produced in McCraven’s signature ‘organic beat music’ style that first debuted on his 2015 album In The Moment\, and further developed across subsequent releases Highly Rare\, Where We Come From\, and Universal Beings\, where he exercises heavy post-production on live recordings of improvisations he leads from the drumkit.

SUMMARY:PIERRE BENSUSAN
DESCRIPTION:“It’s like the guitar has been given free rein to play itself!” \nPierre Bensusan is a French acoustic guitar virtuoso\, vocalist\, and composer whose distinctive voice has made him a defining figure in contemporary world music. Known internationally as “Mr DADGAD”\, Bensusan has spent five decades bringing his singular sound to concert halls and festivals across the globe. \nWidely regarded as one of the great guitarists of the 21st century\, his influence is such that fellow innovators have paid direct tribute – most notably when Michael Hedges titled a composition “Bensusan.” Awards include the Rose d’Or at the Montreux Festival\, the Independent Music Award Grand Prix for his triple live album Encore\, and repeated recognition as Best World Music Guitarist by Guitar Player Magazine readers. \nCelebrated by artists across genres- from Leo Kottke and Tommy Emmanuel to Mark Knopfler and Pat Metheny – Bensusan’s work has also attracted champions beyond the guitar world. Steve Vai released three of his albums on the Favored Nations label\, and recent collaborations include studio work on Donny Osmond’s Start Again. \nIf world music is the artful fusion of tradition and innovation- blending folk roots with jazz\, classical\, and contemporary expression – Pierre Bensusan stands among its most eloquent voices. A pianist by training and self-taught guitarist\, his pioneering approach to open tunings\, especially DADGAD\, has reshaped the acoustic guitar’s expressive possibilities. \nOn stage\, Bensusan is at his most compelling. His concerts are immersive\, lyrical journeys – intimate yet orchestral – where crystalline tone\, rhythmic subtlety\, and poetic storytelling converge. With over half a million albums sold and thousands of performances worldwide since his debut in 1974\, Pierre Bensusan remains a master storyteller and an essential live artist. \n“For me\, so total is his mastery of the solo instrument\, his dazzling harmony\, his deft command of counterpoint\, the jazz idiom\, folk expression\, and all genres between and beyond\, an entire history unfolds as Pierre Bensusan plays. But really\, the emotional depth – and this is where true artistry often likes to live – of many of his songs and compositions is all\, well\, breathtaking. Mr Bensusan can disassemble your heart and hand it back to you restored and renewed as he did to mine tonight. A true giant.” – James Volpe Rotondi (editor Guitar Player Magazine) \n“I’ve seen Placido Domingo\, Alfred Brendel\, Itzhak Perlman\, Daniel Barenboim\, Lynn Harrell\, Nureyev etc.\, etc.\, perform magnificently. Tonight\, in Atlanta\, in the last half of the second set\, Pierre Bensusan went a quantum beyond the warm\, compelling\, appealing\, extremely accomplished guitarist whose recordings and performances I’ve eagerly sought for over 30 years. He’s achieved the sublime — decades of technique\, creativity\, intuition\, passion\, and intensity crashed together — a man transformed\, singular\, stunning. I have so seldom had the privilege and pure animal joy of experiencing this caliber of artistry.” – Rain Crow (a fan)
