DESCRIPTION:14 Henrietta Street presents Teatime Talks a series of talks inspired by the history and people of 14 Henrietta Street. By listening and engaging with visitors\, historians\, experts\, local people\, former tenement residents and their families\, they continue to uncover\, record and respond to the 300 year story of 14 Henrietta Street. \n\nThe Plough and the Stars is one of the most celebrated (and most controversial) plays ever staged in the Abbey Theatre\, which has at times had as turbulent a history as the play itself. This talk by Historian in Residence Caitlin White marks the 75th anniversary of the fire that damaged the original building and explores Sean O’Casey’s Dublin masterpiece\, set in a Dublin tenement\, and its legacy in the Abbey.\n\nThis talk will take place in person on the 1st floor of the Museum and can be accessed via lift. From early beginnings in a free school and commune AA Bronson has spent over six decades developing work through collaboration. SUMMARY:From Dublin to Nairobi: A Lecture by Sahara Abdi
DESCRIPTION:James Joyce’s Ulysses is often celebrated as a European modernist masterpiece. Reading it from a postcolonial perspective reveals resonances with the experience of colonial and postcolonial Kenya. Dublin\, under British rule was not only politically constrained but culturally subdued. Joyce dramatizes these pressures through the lives of Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom. These texts speak to similar forms of marginalization and linguistic domination experienced in Africa. \nNgũgĩ wa Thiong’o\, one of Kenya’s most important writers offers a lens for reading these resonances. His central argument in Decolonising the Mind is that colonial language is a tool of domination. “The domination of a people’s language by the language of the colonising nations was crucial to the domination of the mental universe of the colonised.” \nSeparated by time\, both Joyce and Ngugi are reconstructing cultural memory under colonial pressure and they represent two colonial experiences responding differently to same imperial language. \nThis lecture juxtaposes Joyce and Ngugi to explore how both writers represent colonial subjectivity\, the politics of language\, and the dignity of ordinary life\, despite their different historical and geographical contexts. \nSahara Abdi is writer\, a literacy advocate and the founder of Northern Voice Trust\, a literacy organization dedicated to fostering reading\, writing\, and creative expression in Northern Kenya. Through her writing\, she amplifies the stories and identities of children from Northern Kenya. Her work blends storytelling and advocacy to promote literacy and representation for young readers across marginalized communities. She champions storytelling as a powerful tool for identity\, belonging and social change. \nThe lecture is supported by the Embassy of Ireland\, Kenya.

SUMMARY:Ancient Manuscripts and the Psychology of Reading
DESCRIPTION:Dr Christoph Scheepers\, Senior Lecturer in Psychology\, University of Glasgow \nResearch in the psychology of reading has traditionally centred on the cognitive processes involved in text comprehension. This includes exploring questions such as: “How do readers recognize words?”\, “How do they integrate information at the word\, sentence\, and discourse levels to construct a coherent interpretation of the text?”\, or “How do they resolve ambiguities at these various levels?”. \nAncient manuscripts introduce an additional aesthetic dimension to these inquiries—an area that so far has received relatively little attention in the psychology of reading. These manuscripts are particularly rich in paratextual features\, such as marginalia\, cross-referencing systems\, and artworks\, which supplement the main text. These elements have the potential to convey knowledge and understanding that extend beyond the content of the primary text itself. \nExamining how this process occurs requires a comprehensive approach that combines methodologies from the psychology of reading—particularly eye-tracking (to identify where readers focus their attention)—with survey and qualitative data. This integrated approach aims to assess not only the reading process\, but also the aesthetic and emotional responses to manuscript elements and how they affect interpretation in different readers. \nIn this lecture\, I will discuss key findings from applying this method to ancient manuscripts as part of the Paratexts Seeking Understanding project\, with a particular emphasis on the role of aesthetics\, in shaping readers’ interpretations of texts. \nFREE Talk:  No booking required for onsite talk\, please register for online viewing via Zoom HERE. \nAbout the Speaker:\nDr Christoph Scheepers is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Glasgow and is the Scientific Director of the Templeton project Paratext Seeking Understanding. He obtained his Master’s degree at the University of Bochum (1991) and his PhD at the University of Freiburg (1997). He held an Assistant Professorship in Computational Linguistics at Saarbruecken University (2000–2003) and Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Dundee (2003-2005)\, before moving to Glasgow. Dr Scheepers’s scientific background is in general cognitive science\, with a particular focus on psycholinguistics. He is an expert in eye-tracking research and statistical methods. He has held various research grants funded by ESRC\, and his Google Scholar citation index confirms over 18\,000 citations of his work so far.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at Seamus Heaney: Listen Now Again Saturday 24th May at 2pm for a fascinating talk from Dr Rosie Lavan of Trinity College Dublin on Seamus Heaney’s first and most beloved collection\, Death of a Naturalist\, in celebration of the 60th anniversary of its publication. \nDeath of a Naturalist gained fame for Heaney as he movingly describes his journey from innocence to experience and from his rural upbringings in Co. Derry to the urban world of Belfast. Dr Lavan will discuss the book’s journey towards publication\, looking at how some of Heaney’s most cherished poems – including ‘Digging’\, ‘Twice Shy’ and ‘Death of a Naturalist’ – made their first appearances in British magazines including the New Statesman and Vogue\, where they can be found in some intriguing contexts. To do so\, she will draw on some of the most special items in our collection\, such as the letter from Faber & Faber telling Heaney that Death of a Naturalist had been accepted for publication.

DESCRIPTION:Promenade in conversation with The Five Lamps Arts Festival \n\n\n\n\nAre you a festival maker\, producer\, or arts programmer navigating the realities of creating ambitious work in today’s arts landscape? \nJoin us for a relaxed\, conversation-led networking panel that brings together festival producers and programmers from across Dublin and nationally to reflect on the practical and creative challenges of producing arts and festivals in Ireland. Together\, we’ll exchange knowledge\, share strategies\, and consider how we sustain bold artistic work in Ireland’s current cultural context. \nThis gathering offers a valuable opportunity to connect with peers who understand the pressures of building partnerships\, supporting artists and growing audiences\, allowing us to connect by creating space for reflection\, exchange of practice\, and the development of new professional connections across Dublin and the wider national landscape. \nWhat to Expect \nSpace for open\, informal dialogue in place of formal presentations\, encouraging honest conversation\, shared problem-solving\, and meaningful exchange. DESCRIPTION:Irish Artists on the River Loing: Friendships and Experimentation\, 1890-1932\nAs part of Friends Fortnight 2026\, Friends of the National Gallery of Ireland and the Education Department of the National Gallery of Ireland are delighted to present a talk by renowned art historian Jonathan Benington. \nThe talk will focus on two friends: Roderic O’Conor and the unjustly overlooked Katherine McCausland\, who made France their adopted home and evolved a Post-Impressionist approach\, while continuing to visit and live in Grez beyond the turn of the century. \nUsing little-known paintings as well as pieces on show in the Gallery\, Benington will examine the two Irish artists’ close friendship and their bonds with other residents of and visitors to the international colony. The talk will also include a virtual tour of Grez and its surrounds.
