SUMMARY:THE CASTELLOWS
DESCRIPTION:Rooted in the red clay of Georgetown\, Georgia\, The Castellows are a sister trio redefining neo-traditional country music with a fresh Southern soul. Composed of Ellie\, Lily\, and Powell Balkcom\, the group blends blood harmony with back-porch honesty\, creating a sound that’s as timeless as it is current. \nRaised on gospel\, bluegrass\, and the stories of small-town life\, The Castellows found their collective voice in 2022\, quickly gaining traction with stripped-down covers and original songs shared across social media. Their natural harmonies and authentic presence drew fans in by the thousands—and caught the attention of Nashville. \nBy 2023\, the sisters had inked a deal with Warner Music Nashville and Warner Records\, officially kicking off a professional journey that had long been in the making. Their debut EP\, A Little Goes a Long Way (2024)\, produced by Grammy-winner Trina Shoemaker\, introduced the world to the heart and grit behind their music. With six of the seven tracks penned by the trio\, the EP is a heartfelt homage to faith\, family\, and Southern roots. \nIn 2024 alone\, they sold out nearly half of their very first headlining tour\, dropped three singles—including Sober Sundays\, a standout collaboration with Wyatt Flores—and released a buzzworthy EP. They also hit the road with country icons Little Big Town and Sugarland\, earning new fans across the country. \nBreaking into 2025 starting with a C2C a brand new EP titled Homecoming and a major tour alongside Thomas Rhett. And the momentum doesn’t stop there—the Castellows will headline again this fall on their very own Homecoming Tour. \nWhether it’s a front-porch singalong or a sold-out stage\, The Castellows deliver every note with raw emotion and radiant unity. Their sound is a little old-school\, a little new wave\, and a whole lot of home.

SUMMARY:Pat Metheny - Side-Eye III+
DESCRIPTION:Pat Metheny Guitars\nJoe Dyson Drums\nChris Fishman Piano/Keyboards\nJermaine Paul Bass\nLeonard Patton Percussion/Vocal \nThe acclaimed jazz musician returns to NCH with the latest iteration of his celebrated project\, Side-Eye III+. \nSide-Eye III+ showcases Pat Metheny’s enduring dedication to mentoring the next generation of jazz innovators while exploring fresh musical territories. \n  \n\n\n\nPat Metheny was born in Lee’s Summit\, MO on August 12\, 1954\, into a musical family. Starting on trumpet at the age of 8\, Metheny switched to guitar at age 12. By the age of 15\, he was working regularly with the best jazz musicians in Kansas City\, receiving valuable on-the- bandstand experience at an unusually young age. Metheny first burst onto the international jazz scene in 1974. Over the course of his three-year stint with vibraphone great Gary Burton\, the young Missouri native already displayed his soon-to-become trademarked playing style\, which blended the loose and flexible articulation customarily reserved for horn players with an advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibility: a way of playing and improvising that was modern in conception but grounded deeply in the jazz tradition of melody\, swing\, and the blues. With the release of his first album\, Bright Size Life (1975)\, he reinvented the traditional “jazz guitar” sound for a new generation of players. Throughout his career\, Pat Metheny has continued to redefine the genre by utilizing new technology and constantly working to evolve the improvisational and sonic potential of his instrument. \nMetheny’s versatility is nearly without peer on any instrument. Over the years\, he has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Reich to Ornette Coleman to Herbie Hancock to Jim Hall to Milton Nascimento to David Bowie. Metheny’s body of work includes compositions for solo guitar\, small ensembles\, electric and acoustic instruments\, large orchestras\, and ballet pieces and even the robotic instruments of his Orchestrion project\, while always sidestepping the limits of any one genre. \nAs well as being an accomplished musician\, Metheny has also participated in the academic arena as a music educator. At 18\, he was the youngest teacher ever at the University of Miami. At 19\, he became the youngest teacher ever at the Berklee College of Music\, where he also received an honorary doctorate more than twenty years later\, in 1996. He has also taught music workshops all over the world\, from the Dutch Royal Conservatory to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz to clinics in Asia and South America. He has also been a true musical pioneer in the realm of electronic music and was one of the very first jazz musicians to treat the synthesizer as a serious musical instrument. Years before the invention of MIDI technology\, Metheny was using the Synclavier as a composing tool. He also has been instrumental in the development of several new kinds of guitars such as the soprano acoustic guitar\, the 42-string Pikasso guitar\, Ibanez’s PM series jazz guitars\, and a variety of other custom instruments. \nIt is one thing to attain popularity as a musician\, but it is another to receive the kind of acclaim Metheny has garnered from critics and peers. Over the years\, he has won countless polls as “Best Jazz Guitarist” and awards\, including three gold records for (Still Life) Talking\, Letter from Home\, and Secret Story. He has also won 20 Grammy Awards spread out over a variety of different categories including Best Rock Instrumental\, Best Contemporary Jazz Recording\, Best Jazz Instrumental Solo\, Best Instrumental Composition at one point winning seven consecutive Grammys for seven consecutive albums. In 2015 he was inducted into the DownBeat Hall of Fame\, becoming only the fourth guitarist to be included (along with Django Reinhardt\, Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery) and its youngest member. In 2018\, he was named an NEA Jazz Master\, the nation’s highest honor in jazz\, awarded to the recipients “for their lifetime achievements and exceptional contributions to the advancement of jazz.” Metheny has spent much of his life on tour\, often doing more than 100 shows a year since becoming a bandleader in the 70’s. \nAt the time of this writing\, he continues to be one of the brightest stars of the jazz community\, dedicating time to both his own projects and those of emerging artists and established veterans alike\, helping them to reach their audience as well as realizing their own artistic visions. \nPresented by the NCH

SUMMARY:Lucy Rose
DESCRIPTION:Lucy Rose’s return to the stage follows one of the most challenging and transformative periods of her life. After the release of her critically acclaimed 2019 album ‘No Words Left’\, which culminated in a sold-out performance at London’s Barbican\, Rose planned a period of rest following years of relentless touring\, but was instead met with a rare and life-altering diagnosis. \n“Five weeks after I gave birth to Otis\, I started getting back pain… until one night\, whilst lifting him\, my back went.” An eventual MRI scan revealed eight fractured vertebrae caused by pregnancy-associated osteoporosis\, a condition affecting fewer than 1 in 100\,000 women\, leaving her unable to carry out everyday tasks with doctors unable to guarantee recovery. \nRecovery came gradually\, aided by hydrotherapy that\, in Rose’s words\, “really changed my life.” As her physical strength returned\, so too did her connection to music. \nWhat followed was a creative reawakening that reshaped her relationship with songwriting\, including time spent working with Logic and recording at Paul Weller’s studio\, embracing a more open and instinctive creative process. \n‘This Ain’t The Way You Go Out’ is an album constructed from the ashes of despair\, nurturing the tiniest of green shoots and giving life to something that had looked otherwise spent. It’s a new era for Lucy\, and an era in its purest\, truest sense. An artist re-awakening herself to the power of music\, and having a lot of fun in the process of its discovery and delivery.

SUMMARY:Pansy Division
DESCRIPTION:Pansy Division is a gay pop-punk formed in San Francisco in 1991. There have been gay musicians throughout rock music history\, but when Pansy Division began they were one of the first to be so boldly open about it.  Founded by guitarist/singer Jon Ginoli and bassist/vocalist Chris Freeman\, with the intent of forming a gay rock band\, and joined later by drummer Luis Illades and guitarist Joel Reader\, Pansy Division blew the closet doors open. \nRaised on a diet of 60s pop and 70s punk\, their sound was suitably crunchy and catchy as hell. They wrote in-your-face lyrics\, but did it with a sense of humor. Not only did their music and stance defy stereotypical norms of rock musicians being openly gay\, they also broke gay cultural stereotypes that rock wouldn’t interest gay people. \nWriting upbeat catchy songs and combining them with overtly sexual and sometimes humorous lyrics\, Pansy Division toured North and America and Europe in the ’90s and developed a cult following worldwide that exists to this day. They took a stand poking fun at homophobes and asserting a positive message of inclusion while singing about topics rarely heard in the world of rock and punk. They have been going for over 30 years and their approach remains relevant now.

Boasting new research from leading experts in Irish women’s writing\, the essays explore representations of unmarried and widowed women in writing by Elizabeth Bowen\, Kate O’Brien\, Mary Lavin\, Molly Keane\, Eva Gore-Booth\, Edna O’Brien\, and more\, in order to better understand the historical trajectories of the ‘female celibate’ as a political and cultural figure in Ireland. \nIn the accompanying podcast series Unmarried Sisters\, Dr Paul Fagan speaks to leading figures in Irish\, gender\, and sexuality studies to learn more about historical collaborations and the bonds formed between differently celibate Irish women—whether in friendships\, romantic relationships\, creative collaborations or forms of political and revolutionary organisation—and to explore celibacy’s imbrications with first-wave feminist politics\, patterns of queer kinship\, and Irish literary modernism. \nThe special collection and podcast will be launched by Prof. Katherine Ebury (incoming UCD James Joyce Chair)\, with additional remarks by the editor Dr. Paul Fagan (University of Vienna) and contributors Prof. Anne Fogarty (UCD)\, Prof. Maureen O’Connor (UCC)\, Dr. Deirdre Foley (TCD) and Dr. Fae McNamara (Teesside University). \nThe special issue and podcast series were made possible by the support of the Research Ireland project Celibacy in Irish Women’s Writing\, 1860s–1950s (GOIPD/2022/634). \nRefreshments will be provided. The event is free but booking is essential. \nThe James Joyce Centre is supported by the Department of Culture\, Communications and Sport.
