The prolific Texan musicians Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein are responsible for a body of work that’s synonymous with the fictional town of Hawkins\, Indiana\, the supernatural everytown at the center of the Netflix hit Stranger Things. But as the small town becomes the unlikely site for a supernatural battle within the hit series\, Dixon and Stein’s soundscapes\, too\, have expanded in lockstep. In the meantime\, Stein and Dixon compose music for feature films\, documentary series and large-scale installations and play in the band S U R V I V E. Working in the lineage of predecessors like John Carpenter and contemporary peers like Oneohtrix Point Never\, Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein use a lifelong obsession with synthesizers and electronic music as a vehicle for larger-than-life visions. \nWhile Dixon & Stein came to prominence composing music for a series that has become a cultural touchstone\, Stranger Things\, imagery and setting have always been central to the duo’s practice. In 2009\, alongside Mark Donica and Adam Jones\, they formed the live synthesizer band S U R V I V E. Leading up to the formation of the quartet\, Dixon and Stein experimented with field recordings\, venturing down tunnels and ascending water towers around Austin\, Texas\, hauling battery-powered modular setups and field recording equipment out to the sorts of places the Stranger Things kids might explore on their bicycles. As opposed to the laptop-based performances common in live electronic music at the time\, S U R V I V E hauled a studio’s worth of synthesizers and amplifiers into dive bars for legendary live performances\, achieving the ability to fill the room with crushing sound. Whether they knew it or not\, with S U R V I V E\, Dixon and Stein laid the groundwork for their future as one of the pre-eminent scoring teams of our time. Rather than speaking in musical terms\, they’d describe their instrumental synth music with visual cues—a helicopter soaring over a waterfall\, a high-speed chase down darkened Los Angeles alleys. \nWhen The Duffer Brothers found the band and tapped Dixon and Stein for work on Stranger Things\, the duo rolled their sleeves up\, taking on a workload typically handled by a fleet of composers and assistants. As the show gradually transformed from ’80s sci-fi period piece to an expansive supernatural epic\, Stein and Dixon rose to the occasion. While their music for early seasons focused on the timeless sound of ’80s analog synthesizers\, they’d soon harness melodies and atmospherics befitting Eleven and Mike’s interdimensional struggle. Music is a main character in Stranger Things\, with Dixon and Stein’s soundtrack weaving in and out of triumphant\, period-appropriate songs like Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill.” That song topped the charts after its pivotal use in season four. Similarly\, the duo’s tireless work on Stranger Things catapulted them from underground synth heroes to key composers for modern film and television. Stein and Dixon won an Emmy for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music for their work on the show\, in addition to nominations for multiple Grammys and ASCAP awards. \nFor recent seasons of Stranger Things\, the duo has worked at a daunting pace\, crafting the equivalent of a feature film score every two weeks. Somehow\, they’ve also found time to work on multiple feature films in recent years. For Joaquin del Paso’s 2021 independent psychological thriller The Hole In The Fence\, Stein and Dixon paid homage to Tomita’s epic synthesizer compositions as well as the pioneering electronic experiments of Oscar Sala. Their score received a Hollywood Music In Media Awards nomination for Best Independent Score\, while the film itself premiered at Venice Film Festival and took home best film honors at the Cairo Film Festival. They also composed music for Meow Wolf’s massive Denver site. The multimedia installation features ab unnersuve zone scored by the duo\, who were tasked with conceiving a simple\, Close Encounters-style melody that saves a fictional world. Over the pandemic\, Dixon and Stein managed to collaborate remotely with musicians and multiple choirs\, even integrating the mysterious and singular sounds of a Bulgarian Women’s Choir into their Meow Wolf score. The duo also composed the score for the 2021 horror-tinged thriller Retaliators\, adding to a burgeoning catalog that has placed Stein and Dixon’s soundscapes behind VR-views of the cosmos (Spheres)\, scenes from ’90s Silicon Valley (Valley Of The Boom)\, and the journey of an 11-year-old transgender girl (Butterfly)\, to name just a few. \nAfter this prolific run\, Dixon and Stein are simultaneously going back to their roots and embracing new challenges. Currently working out of their respective\, hardware-heavy studios in Los Angeles and Austin\, they’ll soon reunite with their band\, S U R V I V E\, for a new album and worldwide touring. At heart\, Stein and Dixon are avid students of electronic music history who constantly explore new methods of composition and scoring. While they have a clear facility for soundtracking the supernatural and otherworldly\, Stein and Dixon have an equal interest in scoring quieter\, decidedly human drama. From the fall of ’23 they clocked in 130 shows in 2 years in 15 countries and released a single in ’25 on Antena Krzyku in Poland for the first extensive European tour. Over this time a second record was in the works and as ’26 dawned the final touches for “Nothing Changes Everything” were completed and preparations for an April 21 release\, exactly 3 years after Life Like\, were underway. In 2021\, Gibbard and DCfC were honored as one of the 200 Most Important Artists of Pitchfork’s First 25 Years. \nAfter developing a loyal underground following via their first three albums\, 1998’s Something About Airplanes\, 2000’s We Have The Facts and We’re Voting Yes (later voted #27 on Pitchfork’s The 50 Best Indie Rock Albums of the Pacific Northwest)\, and 2001’s The Photo Album\, DCfC broke into mainstream consciousness with 2003’s era-defining\, platinum-certified album Transatlanticism\, home to aughts classics such as “The New Year\,” “Title and Registration\,” and “The Sound of Settling\,” which would go on to be named by NPR as one of “The Decade’s 50 Most Important Recordings and place on Rolling Stone’s 100 Best Albums of the 2000s. \nAs DCfC’s profile grew\, bolstered by a prominent guest appearance on the popular teen drama The OC\, Gibbard and the group transitioned from the indie incubator Barsuk Records to major label Atlantic Records\, on which they released their Platinum-certified\, Grammy-nominated (for Best Alternative Album) 2005 project\, Plans\, which featured chart-topping singles “Soul Meets Body” and “I Will Follow You into the Dark\,” the latter of which was also honored with a GRAMMY nod (Best Pop Performance By Duo Or Group With Vocals). \nOver the next two decades\, DCfC would release five more beloved albums\, beginning with 2008’s Narrow Stairs\, 2011’s Codes and Keys\, 2015’s Kintsugi (each received GRAMMY nominations)\, 2018’s Thank You For Today\, whose lead single “Gold Rush” hit No. 1 on both the Alternative and Adult Alternative radio charts. 2022’s Asphalt Meadows\, whose singles “Here To Forever” and “Pepper” became the band’s seventh and eighth No. 1s (respectively) on the Adult Alternative Airplay chart. \nIn 2019\, the band subverted genre expectations when they hopped on Chance the Rapper’s track “Do You Remember (ft. Death Cab for Cutie).” Two years later\, Gibbard teamed up with ambient songwriter Tycho on the joint single\, “Only Love.” Meanwhile\, in 2016\, Gibbard wrote a song called “Me & Magdalena” for classic ’60s boy band The Monkees. The track appeared on The Monkees’ album Good Times! and was ranked Rolling Stone‘s 18th best song of that year. \nA prolific songwriter\, curator\, performer\, and philanthropist\, Gibbard has always found time to weave in creative projects between DCfC albums. In 2004\, DCfC supported Pearl Jam as part of the Vote for Change Tour and contributed a track to the Dave Eggers-curated compilation album\, The Future Soundtrack for America. Their political activism continued in 2008 when they performed at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. A few years later\, Gibbard became the first person to write an essay for the 90 Days\, 90 Reasons project. In 2016\, DCfC’s anti-Trump song\, “Million Dollar Loan\,” launched 30 Days\, 30 Songs\, and in 2020\, they contributed a track to the Good Music To Avert the Collapse of American Democracy compilation\, which raised funds for voters’ rights organizations ahead of that year’s election. \nMeanwhile\, as the COVID-19 pandemic upended the music industry in early 2020\, Gibbard hosted regular livestreaming events from his own home\, which brought an enormous amount of comfort to fans still trapped at home in an uncertain time and raised over $250K in donations and supplies for various Seattle-area organizations. Later that year\, DCfC released the five-song Georgia EP featuring covers of artists from the state of Georgia; the EP raised over $100K for Fair Fight Action\, the national voting rights organization founded by Stacey Abrams. \nIn February 2022\, Gibbard conceived\, curated\, and executive-produced Ocean Child: Songs of Yoko Ono\, an acclaimed tribute to the groundbreaking singer\, songwriter\, multimedia artist\, and activist released in celebration of her 89th birthday. The collection – which included DCfC’s own cover of “Waiting For The Sunrise” – also featured contributions from a wide range of artists\, including David Byrne\, Japanese Breakfast\, the Flaming Lips\, and Sharon Van Etten. \nIn the last five years\, Death Cab for Cutie have taken much-deserved victory laps across the country to celebrate the 20th anniversaries of Transatlanticism and Plans\, the former of which also reunited Gibbard with his bestselling supergroup\, The Postal Service. Both tours landed with a splash; the Transatlanticism 20th Anniversary Tour sold 400\,000 tickets in North America alone (2023-2024) and included two sold-out nights at NYC’s Madison Square Garden and three at LA’s Hollywood Bowl. Additionally\, they headlined festivals such as Kilby Court in Salt Lake City\, Just Like Heaven in Los Angeles\,  Chicago’s Riot Fest\, and London’s venerable All Points East. Reflecting on DCfC’s longevity and the way its music has touched so many lives\, Gibbard says: “Music is a time machine. It’s this thing that takes you back to places in your life. And I think that when you write earnest music in a way that soundtracks moments in people’s lives\, they tend to come see you play some 20 years later.” \nGibbard continues: “If someone comes up to me and tells me a story about how something that I’ve written has impacted them or has marked time in their life\, it sounds kind of hokey\, but it really is one of the greatest compliments you can be given.” \nAs DCfC get prepare to enter a new era\, complete with a return to their indie roots by joining ANTI- Records and readying new music for 2026\, Gibbard opens up about what inspires him to keep creating and evolving as an artist. “I just love the feeling of being in a room having just made something that I’m proud of. I can’t imagine wanting to do anything else\,” Gibbard says. “This is literally what I’ve wanted to do since I was 12 years old. And the fact that I’ve been given the opportunity to do it\, I feel that I have an obligation to my 12-year-old self to continue to do this and find the joy in it\, and to experience the odd wonder of what it’s like to create things.”

The band continued exploring new sonic territory with the emotionally rich two-part album Slush Honey released throughout 2022 and  2023. \nBuilding on two sold-out Australian tours and over 48M streams in 2023\, the band had an even bigger 2024. They reached new heights by selling out their debut UK tour\, and upon their return to NZ\, they completed their third studio album Scatterbrains. The record marked a shift – stepping into darker\, more introspective spaces\, tying up loose ends and acknowledging life’s storms. Singles like ‘Tastes Like Forever’and ‘Sunday Stitches’ climbed the NZ charts\, resonating deeply with fans for their emotional honesty and sonic richness. \nMoving to Sydney in late 2025\, Daily J then released a deluxe edition of Scatterbrains\, which landed them fans across US college radio\, with both singles and the EP hitting the NACC charts. DESCRIPTION:Emerging from Manchester in 2010\, WU LYF [World Unite Lucifer Youth Foundation] arrived at a moment when UK guitar music felt exhausted and directionless. Deliberately shrouded in mystery\, refusing interviews\, limiting press imagery and communicating largely through their self created Lucifer Youth Foundation fan network\, the band generated a rare cult-like anticipation. \nFunding their work through this community and early touring\, the quartet recorded their debut album ‘Go Tell Fire to the Mountain’ inside the abandoned St Peter’s Church in Ancoats. The cavernous space shaped the record’s signature sound: towering natural reverb\, organ-like textures\, sparse yet forceful instrumentation and Ellery Roberts’ fractured vocal cries cutting through the mix. \nReleased in 2011\, the album stood apart from its contemporaries quickly becoming a touchstone for listeners searching for something beyond the indie orthodoxy of the previous decade. \nJust a year later\, Roberts abruptly announced the band’s end\, later forming Lost Under Heaven. Yet WU LYF’s brief existence only deepened their mythology\, preserving the group as a moment fixed in time rather than a career slowly diluted. \nNow\, more than a decade on\, WU LYF return to the stage\, their legacy intact\, their presence as enigmatic as ever.
