Blake Mills contributes guitars on several tracks. Joan Shelley and Robin Holcomb provide backing vocals. In their review of the record\, Pitchfork wrote: “No other American singer is repurposing our old folk scripts with so much authority or ingenuity.”  \n\nMore recently\, Fussell and Elkington collaborated on the music for Rebuilding – a feature film directed by Max Walker-Silverman and starring Josh O’Connor. DESCRIPTION:Darren Kiely’s journey with music has always been driven by something pure. When he picked up a guitar for the first time as a teenager in a small town in Co. Cork\, he did so with the hopes of simply being able to play along to the songs he loved. As he sharpened his skills\, he started to push himself further\, setting himself new challenges – learn a full cover\, play a gig\, then\, eventually\, see if he could write his own song. Throughout this years-long process\, passion and natural curiosity spurred him on. “It was never like\, ‘I’m gonna do this full time’ or ‘I want to play stadiums’\,” he recalls. “It was just one thing led to the next challenge or the next step.” \nIt’s that mindset that has led Kiely to his current position – one of the first artists to be signed to Sony Music Nashville’s non-country imprint\, Free Flight Records\, and winning legions of fans with his emotionally rich\, folk-infused music. Putting out his own music\, though\, wasn’t necessarily always on the cards for the 28-year-old. \nIn 2022\, having gradually built his way up to performing covers gigs at functions and weddings\, he was at a point where he could comfortably make a living – an enviable position\, but one that didn’t leave him fully satisfied. “Somewhere along the path\, I was like\, ‘I don’t want to play cover gigs forever\, but I do want to see if people will listen to my music’\,” he says. \nHe describes writing his own music as something of an emotional awakening. “A lot of the time\, I felt like I was drifting through life\, not really thinking about things\,” he explains. “When you write it down or make a recording and listen back to it\, it really hits you in a way where it’s almost like you’re discovering things about yourself\, but talking to yourself as well.” \nMaking the move into penning his own material was fueled by a feeling that he not only had something to say\, but that there was a value in what he wanted to express\, too. “In the music I listened to growing up\, there were loads of things I learned about myself and about life\,” Kiely says. “But I also thought\, ‘There’s some songs that have never talked about this\, or my experiences\, or how I view things.” \nSo far\, the Irish musician has proved himself right. Across his releases so far\, he’s shared a fresh perspective on timeless tales of making amends to those you’ve hurt but have stuck by you (‘Mom & Dad’) and self-doubt (‘How Could You Love Me’)\, and opened up about subjects rarely broached in music. ‘Avalon’ is a case in point for the latter – a rousing piece of folk-rock that explores the musician’s relationship with his home country and why he felt he had to leave.   “This will always be my home / I see fields of green\,” he sings. “But I can’t find a place to grow / Or the light.” \nThese days\, Kiely is based in Nashville\, but first left Ireland for New York in 2019. It was there he stumbled into playing gigs – an experience cut short by the pandemic\, which sent him back home. Once the borders re-opened\, he headed back to NYC to pick up where he left off\, securing a desk job at an accounting firm but his focus firmly on developing his artistry. “It’s a really tough place and it toughened me up an awful lot\,” he says of his time in the city. “I just got used to grafting and getting beat up a little bit by the place and coming back for more. Music’s like that – there’s a lot of great things\, but in between them\, there’s a lot of times where you’re like\, ‘Alright\, I have to go again and again’. It’s like you’re trying to write a song and it’s not as good as you want it to be\, but you have to go again.” \nAs much as New York taught him\, though\, it also left him yearning for something – a community and scene of like-minded musicians to grow and learn with. So\, in 2023\, he upped sticks to Nashville after hearing about the songwriting scene in the city. What Kiely has found since making the move is not only keeping him productive and creative\, but also aligns with his original ethos when he was first learning to play guitar. “I’m a very small fish in a big pond here\,” he smiles. “I like that. If I’m around who I think are the best\, I can try and learn a little bit from them and try and get a little bit better.” \nYou can hear that commitment to growth across his catalogue so far\, from debut single ‘How Could You Love Me’ – which landed a place on Ireland’s top 50 viral charts – to his 2023 debut EP\, ‘Lost’. The latter depicted its creator’s search for his place in both music and the world around him\, pushing through imposter syndrome and moments of uncertainty. The key to the record – its successor\, 2024’s ‘From The Dark’ EP – isn’t the moments of darkness\, though\, but the hope that lingers throughout the songs. “There’s probably a few songs that don’t have too much hope\, but there’s a tinge of it everywhere because I don’t want to wallow in anything or make things overly negative\,” he reasons. “For me\, there is that little bit of hope in every situation.” \nKiely’s upcoming music continues his knack for making distinctive folk-pop with something to say. ‘Find It In You’\, a driving\, uplifting song that finds him reassuring a partner who’s not ready for a relationship that he’ll wait for them: “Whenever your walls fall down and it’s love that you need / I hope you can find it in you to find it in me\,” he shares.  The contemplative ‘Married On My Phone’ deals with the relatable experience of witnessing someone you used to know going through big life milestones via your phone screen. “I saw someone I knew from years ago had got married via Instagram and I was just thinking\, ‘Isn’t it crazy that you see significant events of people you’ve lost touch with [like this]?’ What happens if\, one day\, you end up seeing the person in your current relationship get married on Instagram?” For Kiely\, that song is so different to anything he’s written before – and intentionally so: “I just wanted to hit the nail on the head of all the modern things I don’t really like.” \n‘Old And Grey’\, meanwhile\, harks back to his youth of playing traditional Irish music – experiences that still occasionally peek through in his music today. Midway through\, it surges with a swell of group vocals\, intertwining with a melancholy fiddle melody to create something poignant and powerful. “I don’t sing Irish folk songs really\, but I wanted to have a song that feels like it could be playing in a pub back home\, and I really want to play that fiddle part live\,” he says. \nThese songs are a testament to an artist who has always refused to get complacent or let his music become stagnant. They expand his sonic tapestry\, pushing him into new pockets of sound while keeping his core DNA intact. “I’m not a band that has the same sound for every song\,” he says. “It can sound like different things. That’s one thing that I think has changed in how I’m writing music now – it’s me\, but there’s a different sound. I think that’s important.” \nNo matter how much success Kiely has achieved so far – from gaining traction from his early self-released singles to a recent sold-out headline tour – he’s remaining true to those pure intentions he started out with. As he continues to push himself forward and give himself new challenges\, his ambitions are staying humble. “I just want to sing songs that I believe in\,” he says. “Songs that people can sense that I care about them and what I’m singing is really authentic and honest.”

Mallinder and Watson have stated that there will be no new recordings under the name Cabaret Voltaire. \nIn the current climate of social turmoil and political manipulation\, the prescient work of Cabaret Voltaire continues to be necessary. The sounds\, words\, images and films of the band still resonate loudly\, continuing to challenge the status quo. \nThe events in 2025 and 2026 will curate this essential work and to acknowledge the timeless energy and to mark the continuing significance and power of what Cabaret Voltaire achieved. A musical sensation formed in 2016 in the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar\, the quartet are the pioneers of the genre Hunnu Rock\, with almost 900 million global streams to their name – and counting. 2019’s debut album The Gereg put them on the map: not just in their home country\, where they were the first group ever to be awarded the prestigious Chinggis Khaan Order\, but even a galaxy far\, far away\, contributing an original song to the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order soundtrack. \nTwo years later\, their name sat alongside the likes of Elton John\, St. Vincent and Ghost on the epic tracklist to The Metallica Blacklist record\, performing a distinct\, formidable cover of ‘Through The Never’ at the personal request of the metal legends. These are some of the strange and richly drawn characters who inhabit James McMurtry’s eleventh album\, The Black Dog & the Wandering Boy. A supremely insightful and inventive storyteller\, he teases vivid worlds out of small details\, setting them to arrangements that have the elements of Americana—rolling guitars\, barroom harmonies\, traces of banjo and harmonica—but sound too sly and smart for such a general category. Funny and sad often in the same breath\, the album adds a new chapter to a long career that has enjoyed a resurgence as young songwriters like Sarah Jarosz and Jason Isbell cite him as a formative influence. \nAs varied as they are\, these new story-songs find inspiration in scraps from his family’s past: a stray sketch\, an old poem by a family friend\, the hallucinations experienced by his father\, the writer Larry McMurtry. “It’s something I do all the time\,” he says\, “but usually I draw from my own scraps.” As any good writer will do\, McMurtry collects little ideas and hangs on to them for years\, sometimes even decades. “South Texas Lawman” grew out of a line from a poem by a friend of the McMurtry clan\, T.D. Hobart. Driven by gravelly guitars and a loose rhythm section\, it’s a careful study of a man whose feelings of obsolescence motivate him to take drastic action in the final verse. “Dwight’d stay at our house way back in the ‘70s\, when we lived in Virginia. During one visit he wrote this poem about his father’s attitude toward South Texas. He wrote it down on cardboard\, and I came across it recently. There was a line about hunting quail on horseback\, and that was the seed of the song. I’ve lost the poem since then.” \nThe rumbling title track\, a kind of squirrelly blues\, features two mysterious figures who appear only to those slipping from reality\, yet it’s never grim nor especially despairing. Instead\, McMurtry namechecks a “Weird Al” deep cut and depicts a tortured soul who doesn’t have to work a nine-to-five. He finds a defiant humor in the situation at odds with the gravity of the source material. “The title of the album and that song comes from my stepmother\, Faye. After my dad passed\, she asked me if he ever talked to me about his hallucinations. He’d gone into dementia for a while before he died\, but hadn’t mentioned to me anything about seeing things. She told me his favorite hallucinations were the black dog and the wandering boy. I took them and applied them to a fictional character.” \nSoon McMurtry had enough of these songs for a new record. “It happened like all my records happened. It’d been too long since I’d had a record that the press could write about and get people to come out to my shows. It was time.” What was different this time was the presence of his old friend Don Dixon\, who produced McMurtry’s third album\, Where You’d Hide the Body?\, back in 1995. “A couple of years ago I quit producing myself. I felt like I was repeating myself methodologically and stylistically. I needed to go back to producer school\, so I brought in CC Adcock for Complicated Game\, and then Ross Hogarth did The Horses & the Hounds. It seemed natural to revisit Mr. Dixon’s homeroom. I wanted to learn some of what he’s learned over the last thirty years.” During sessions at Wire Recording in Austin\, McMurtry observed firsthand Dixon’s grasp of digital recording technology as well as his instinctual approach to tracking. “What Don’s really good at is being able to sense when it’s happening. He can hear when it’s going down. If I’m producing myself and I don’t have him\, I have to do three takes and then go in and listen to them. Listening to those three takes can take about 15 minutes. So Dixon’s ability to know when it’s happening is crucial\, because it can cut 15 minutes out of the day. That can really save a session\, because you only have so many hours in the day and only so much energy. \nWorking with McMurtry’s trusted backing band—Cornbread on bass\, Tim Holt on guitar\, Daren Hess on drums\, BettySoo on backing vocals—they worked to create something that sounds spontaneous\, as though he’s writing the songs as you hear them. They were open to odd experiments\, weird whims\, and happy accidents\, such as the cover of Jon Dee Graham’s “Laredo” that opens the album. It’s an opioid blues: testimony from a part-time junkie losing a weekend to dope. “We were playing a benefit for Jon Dee at the Hole in the Wall there in Austin\, and we thought it’d be good if we played one of his songs. We rehearsed the song in the studio\, and it sounded good. The drums were ready. We’d already got the sounds up. Might as well record it.” \n“Laredo” is one of a pair of covers that bookend The Black Dog & the Wandering Boy\, the other being Kris Kristofferson’s “Broken Freedom Song.” \n“I did that one a few weeks after our initial sessions. It was just me and BettySoo\, then we added drums and bass later on. Kris had just passed not too long before we recorded it. I guess that’s why I was thinking about him.” Like Hobart’s poem\, it’s a bit of inspiration excavated from deep within his own life. “Kris was one of my major influences as a child. He was the first person that I recognized as a songwriter. I hadn’t really thought about where songs came from\, but I started listening to Kristofferson as a songwriter and thinking\, How do you do this? He was actually the second concert I saw. I was nine. He and the band were having such a good time\, and that really solidified for me that this was what I wanted to do with my life.” \nOnce the album was mixed\, mastered\, and sequenced\, McMurtry recalled a rough pencil sketch he had found a few years earlier in his father’s effects. It seemed like it might make a good cover. “I knew it was of me\, but I didn’t realize who drew it. I asked my mom and my stepdad\, and finally I asked my stepmom\, Faye\, who said it looked like Ken Kesey’s work back in the ‘60s. She was married to Ken for forty years.” The Merry Prankster’s—Kesey’s roving band of hippie activists and creators—stopped by often to visit Larry McMurtry and his family. “I don’t remember their first visit\, the one documented in Tom Wolfe’s Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. I was too young\, but I do remember a couple of Ken’s visits. I guess he drew it on one of those later stops. I remembered it and thought it would be the perfect art\, but I had to go back through the storage locker. It’s a miracle that I found it again.” \nIt’s a fitting image for an album that scavenges personal history for inspiration. Even the songwriter himself doesn’t always know what will happen or where the songs will take him. “You follow the words where they lead. If you can get a character\, maybe you can get a story. If you can set it to a verse-chorus structure\, maybe you can get a song. A song can come from anywhere\, but the main inspiration is fear. Specifically\, fear of irrelevance. If you don’t have songs\, you don’t have a record. If you don’t have a record\, you don’t have a tour. You gotta keep putting out work.”

DESCRIPTION:Dharmacide are a Madrid-based band known for their eclectic fusion of shoegaze\, dream pop\, and post-punk. Their sound is characterized by intricate guitar riffs\, powerful drums\, and deep\, soulful vocals that create a unique and immersive atmosphere. Drawing influences from contemporary bands such as DIIV\, Warpaint\, and Beach House\, as well as earlier artists like Cocteau Twins\, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds\, and Tom Waits\, the group blends ethereal textures with darker\, more introspective tones. \nThe band has grown since its inception\, and some of its members are also part of other projects\, such as Depresión Sonora\, Alcalá Norte and TourJets. \nAfter several singles and performances in Paris (Supersonic) and Berlin (8MM Club)\, they released their debut LP Cult Band Member in September 2021\, whose vinyl edition is now sold out. The first half of the album was recorded in Los Angeles with producer Orchin (Hatchie\, Launder\, Tamaryn)\, and it was completed in Madrid at Alejandro Leiva’s studio (Bum Motion Club). The album was presented at Sala El Sol in Madrid with the support of Elias Bender Rønnenfelt (Iceage). \nThe strong reception of their debut led them to perform at festivals such as BBK Live\, Primavera Sound\, Eurosonic ESNS\, The New Colossus Festival in New York\, Vida Festival\, Tomavistas\, Monkey Week\, Esmorga Fest\, and Zgz Psych Fest\, among others. They have also opened for international bands such as Tess Parks\, Bodega\, and Just Mustard during their visits to Madrid. \nIn their ongoing search for the “shoe that fits Dharmacide’s size\,” the band led by René Sharrocks crossed paths with one of their reference shoemakers\, Mark Gardener (Ride)\, who produced\, mixed\, and mastered several of their latest singles at his Oxford studio\, including “Lovers” and “Horses/Divorces.” \nTheir second album\, Tougher Than The Rest\, marks a step forward for the band with a darker\, more atmospheric sound\, full of eerie riffs and ethereal vocals. The record evokes the feeling of a long night filled with the strange and random events we have all experienced\, expanding their sonic identity while maintaining their dreamlike intensity. \nThe band will take over Curveball (upstairs the Button Factory) in Dublin for the first time. All but one of us met at a large and wearing party in Oxford\, the sort which goes on far too long\, ceases to be a party\, and instead becomes an endurance test. To pass the time\, we picked up instruments and played for a couple months\, enjoyed ourselves\, then played more when the party finally came to an end. The fifth member was met during the protracted hang over\, and he fit in just fine. We all gathered in a room in Old Street\, and recorded ourselves with a laptop. Right now someone is recording us with a bigger computer. If you listen real close\, you might hear from us.
