DESCRIPTION:This new temporary exhibition within EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum asks how the millions of Irish people in England have fared over the past 200 years. Based on landmark economic history research using new big data analysis\, it tracks the wealth\, health\, and living standards of Irish migrants and families of Irish descent\, showing that the Irish were substantially poorer than their English neighbours for generations. \nNo Irish Need Apply? highlights the extraordinary contribution Irish women and men have made to the English economy and wider society through their hard work\, vibrant culture\, and political activism. The exhibition also includes the words and music of Irish migrants in England captured in Philip Donnellan’s 1965 film “The Irishmen”\, in collaboration with the Irish Film Institute. \nThe exhibition has been developed by the Department of Economic History at the London School of Economics & Political Science from research by Professor Neil Cummins and Professor Cormac Ó Gráda (UCD). It has been curated by Dr Christoper Kissane\, Engagement & Impact Lead\, LSE Dept of Economic History.

These genre-defining works went on to become cult classics\, inspiring generations of fans through songs such as “In the Street\,” “Thirteen\,” “September Gurls\,” “Back of a Car\,” and “I’m in Love With a Girl.” To celebrate the albums’ enduring legacy\, an all-star collective of musicians (led by the band’s sole surviving original member\, Jody Stephens) will join together on May 1\, at the Smithwick’s Kilkenny Roots Festival (Ireland) to perform many essential songs from Radio City and No. 1 Record\, inducted this year into the Grammy Hall of Fame\, and from the highly influential Third album. \n\nJoining Stephens will be some of the band’s biggest fans who have long been associated with Big Star–related projects\, including Jon Auer (Big Star/The Posies)\, Mike Mills (R.E.M.)\, Chris Stamey (The dB’s)\, and (subbing for Wilco’s Pat Sansone) Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub) \nHeavily influenced by the British Invasion\, yet undeniably original\, Big Star (vocalist/guitarist/pianist Alex Chilton\, vocalist/guitarist Chris Bell\, bassist Andy Hummel\, and drummer Jody Stephens) offered a fresh new sound when they emerged in the early ’70s. While power pop wouldn’t truly take off until later in the decade\, the Memphis band set the tone with their infectious blend of jangly pop\, driving guitars\, sweet harmonies\, and wistful melancholia. In 1971\, Big Star made their debut with #1 Record\, which featured such memorable numbers as “In the Street” (later made famous by Cheap Trick)\, “Thirteen” (“one of rock’s most beautiful celebrations of adolescence” — Rolling Stone\, 2011)\, and “The Ballad of El Goodo.” (“The bridge [or middle eight\, call it what you will] alone shows more talent and creativity than some bands’ entire back catalogues.” — The Guardian\, 2011) While the album garnered high marks from critics\, however\, it failed to make a commercial splash. \n\nBell departed the band soon after\, leaving Chilton\, Hummel\, and Stephens to continue as a trio. In late 1973\, Big Star returned to Ardent Studios to record their follow-up\, with producer John Fry. Despite losing his longtime collaborator\, Chilton stepped in as the band’s de facto leader—a role that allowed his songwriting talents to shine. Released in 1974\, Radio City featured some of Big Star’s most beloved tracks\, including the bluesy opener “O\, My Soul\,” offbeat rocker “Back of a Car\,” the sweet acoustic ballad “I’m in Love with a Girl\,” plus their iconic pop classic\, “September Gurls.” Once again\, Radio City was met with critical acclaim but fell victim to distribution issues\, selling less than 20\,000 copies at the time. \n\nBut the story of Big Star certainly wasn’t over. Shared between friends and musicians as the years went on\, the albums became cult favorites—far exceeding their original commercial performance. Today\, both No. 1 Record and Radio City are considered definitive titles in the power pop canon and have long been counted among rock’s greatest albums. Hailed as “Pure power pop perfection” by Rolling Stone\, Radio City has been included in the outlet’s 2003\, 2012\, and 2020 “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” rankings. “September Gurls\,” meanwhile\, appeared on its “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” list\, while Consequence of Sound declared the track “One of American music’s prototypical power pop jams.” \n\nAlthough Big Star disbanded in late 1974 (not long after recording their third album\, Third/Sister Lovers)\, the band went on to achieve near-mythic status in the underground scene\, influencing some the biggest alt-rock artists of the ’80s\, ’90s and beyond\, including R.E.M.\, Teenage Fanclub\, Wilco\, and The Replacements (who famously penned the song “Alex Chilton” as an ode to the group’s frontman). Over the years\, Big Star’s songs have been reinterpreted by the likes of Elliott Smith\, The Bangles\, Placebo\, Beck\, Gin Blossoms\, Garbage\, Counting Crows\, and Jeff Buckley\, to name a few.\nIn the last two decades\, Big Star has finally been given their due\, honored with a host of glowing retrospectives\, as well as a tribute record (Big Star Small World\, 2006)\, a documentary (2012’s Nothing Can Hurt Me)\, and the 2016 concert film and live album\, Thank You\, Friends: Big Star’s Third Live…And More. DESCRIPTION:At approximately 10.30pm on 1st November 2018 at London’s KOKO\, the curtain came down on the UK’s most exciting band. Enigmatic Creeper frontman Will Gould gave a speech that echoed the late David Bowie’s infamous farewell at his Hammersmith Apollo gig in 1972. “Of all the shows we’ve played in this last four years\, this one will remain with us the longest\,” said Gould before launching into the final track of their set\, “because not only is it the last show of this album\, but it’s the last show that we’ll ever do”. Distraught fans wept in disbelief\, confused at why\, at the height of their powers\, their favourite band would disappear. \nCreeper had formed in 2014 in Southampton\, each of its members influenced by their mutual involvement in the town’s hardcore scene and a love of punk and glam rock. Oliver Burdett and Hannah Greenwood soon joined founding members Gould\, Ian Miles\, Dan Bratton and Sean Scott in 2015. \nThey released EPs that immediately garnered an obsessive fan-base of outsiders and lost teenagers affectionately dubbing themselves the Creeper Cult. The band were hailed as the best new rock band of recent times by critics\, receiving a Kerrang! Award and Metal Hammer Golden Gods Award in 2016. Debut album ‘Eternity’\, ‘In Your Arms’ (2017) aimed to heighten their hometown by the sea to a place of mystery and grandeur; to echo realisations about growing up and out of your old\, younger self. It debuted at number 1 in the UK Rock & Metal Albums Chart and in the top 20 of the UK Albums Chart. Rarely does a new band break through into a scene where the majority of groups achieving those feats are 10+ years into their career\, especially with a debut album. \nMasters of play and pastiche\, the six-piece had always planned to disappear – albeit temporarily – once they’d finished touring their debut\, but suddenly it felt like they’d have to disappear from the music scene for good. Guitarist Ian Miles was extremely unwell and about to be hospitalised\, Gould was burnt out and exhausted. The pair had supported each other through mental health struggles in the past but this was altogether more serious and unknown territory. \nThe worst year of Gould’s life was about to begin. The week after Miles was sectioned\, the pair were meant to fly to LA to write the second album; Creeper’s leader had to go alone. Over the next 12 months\, his mum’s partner unexpectedly passed away and his relationship with his fiance was on the brink of collapse. Unsure of what else to do\, Gould threw all his focus and emotional energy into the album. He knew that everything had to be different – in both his own life and with the band. \nHe wanted to build on the glam\, goth-leaning rock they were loved for but push through to create something far more ambitious. Indeed\, as Gould admits\, “The only way to make another Creeper record\, as difficult as it was\, was to smash Creeper to the ground.” This would be a total rejection of the generic big-production pop punk direction they could easily take. Instead Gould wanted fans to see the pomp\, joy and spirit of Creeper through the lens of the colourful and sentimental Americana of Bruce Springsteen and Roy Orbison\, with the theatrical glam of Marc Bolan and T-Rex. \nGould would sleep all day in his Hollywood apartment and at night emerge into the seedy\, flashy underbelly of Los Angeles. Partying\, exploring and attending fetish clubs\, the Englishman in LA quickly felt at home among the goths\, punks\, misfits and reprobrates of the city. Although he was having a wild ride\, it wasn’t without challenges. “My alcoholism had veered massively out of control\,” he remembers. “I’d swing from optimism about the band’s future to conversations with Ian that made me believe he’d never get better\, and recovery wouldn’t happen.” Gould wrote some of the album alone but some he and Miles wrote together over a webcam – Gould on a mini keyboard in his rented room in the States and his musical partner with an instrument from the Priory hospital in England. \nCreated amongst this emotional turmoil under the hot LA sun\, Sex\, Death & the Infinite Void is a concept album that loosely mirrors Gould’s life. Boy moves to new city\, goes off the rails\, meets new girl\, falls in love and the world as they know it ends. It’s what Gould calls his take on “apocalyptic romanticism.” Never has there been a more appropriate time for riotous end-of-days anthems as we edge closer to the infinite void ourselves. Through rousing gang choruses\, sharp rat-pack style and a golden touch of modern country\, the journey is a cinematic adventure through Gould’s extraordinary mind.

DESCRIPTION:Just Mustard’s heady blend of noise\, trip hop\, and electronic-influenced music has helped them build a reputation as one of Ireland’s most thrilling new bands\, both live and on record. \nTheir have announced their highly anticipated headline show in one of Dublin’s most iconic venues\, 3Olympia Theatre\, on Friday 1st May 2026. \n\n\nFormed in Dundalk\, Ireland\, Just Mustard consists of vocalist Katie Ball\, guitarists David Noonan (also backing vocals) and Mete Kalyoncuoglu\, bassist Robert Hodgers Clarke\, and drummer Shane Maguire. \nAcross their first two albums – 2018’s Wednesday and Partisan Records debut Heart Under from 2022 – the Irish band had become masters at creating haunting noise rock\, Katie Ball’s bewitching vocals swirling amongst the sounds like smoke. Heart Under\, defined by a maelstrom of dark industrial noise and dreamy textures\, explored themes of grief and longing\, with imagery of being submerged deep underwater and gasping for air. On the remarkable WE WERE JUST HERE\, the band reemerges\, leaning towards the light and the rush of euphoria. A pollyanna is defined as an excessively cheerful or optimistic person. For it to be the title and inspiration of the opening track and lead single from Just Mustard’s third album\, WE WERE JUST HERE\, signals a Damascene moment for the Dundalk five-piece. \nAcross these 10 tracks\, the band’s signature elements are still intact: guitars that are warped beyond recognition\, twisted sound design that draws from the luminary world of Aphex Twin and cavernous low ends. Guitarists David Noonan and Mete Kalyoncuoğlu continue to take their instruments to wild and unrecognizable places\, while the rhythm section of bassist Robert Hodgers Clarke and drummer Shane Maguire bring thudding sub bass and clattering percussion respectively. This time though\, it’s all been channeled into a warmer and more anthemic path\, opening up a new dimension of sound for the band. \n“I was trying to write more optimistically\, and feeling like a fraud sometimes\,” Ball says. “To find ‘POLLYANNA’ as a title\, I was looking up different words for toxic happiness. I was trying to achieve happiness even if it wasn’t always helpful. Euphoria was a word that kept coming up – trying to feel euphoric\, but at a cost.” \n“I don’t wanna go where I can’t feel a thing\,” she sings on the bold and melodic “DREAMER”\, while the album’s title track – the perfect mix of their thudding signature guitar sound and new commitment to lightness and warmth – explodes into technicolor noise after Ball’s declaration: “I just wanna make it feel good.” \nThe singer adds: “I was trying to put myself in places of physical joy to try and get that euphoric feeling.” Across the album\, songs draw from a wide spectrum of emotion and feeling\, with characters searching for ecstasy\, holding onto love and grasping for the rush of feeling alive. The vocals foreground these feelings\, and the intricately crafted compositions behind them back up the urge\, whether on the propulsive “SILVER” or the explosive “ENDLESS DEATHLESS”. \nProduced by Noonan and the band\, they aimed for directness and immediacy with their songwriting. While their approach to composition had previously been inspired by their love of electronic music\, starting with instrumental loops and textures and later weaving vocal ideas around them\, the band made a conscious decision to reverse engineer this process on WWJH. For them this meant adopting a more traditional method\, looking to the swirling rock and dynamic song structures of Nirvana and My Bloody Valentine and striving for big\, bold\, fully encompassing songs. \n“The vocal structure was the most important thing\,” Noonan says of how the songs for WE WERE JUST HERE were built. With choruses bursting with melody and brightness\, Ball’s vocals rise higher in the mix throughout the album\, partly as a purely sonic decision but also to hammer home feelings of positivity\, albeit sometimes conflicted ones. \nWhile it presents an expanded emotional palette for the band\, everything is still directed through their unique lens\, feeling Lynchian in the way it shoots for happiness but ends up with something stranger\, more complicated and more fascinating. \nThe strange and distinct universe the band create on record is reinforced with haunting interludes of warped speech and noise: “We wanted to create levels of texture in the album that could recall different layers of memory and time\, also injecting some of our own personal experience of creating into the finished tracks. We used snippets of voice memos from the writing process\, some elements are from the first recorded version or from various demos\, and in the studio used a mixture of digital and analogue equipment and 1/2” tape processing.” \nThe idea of place was also key when writing\, the band thinking about clubs and dancefloors as settings which directed them to strive for something immediate and urgent. “When we were writing the songs\, we could actually sometimes see different rooms and imagine playing this song in this venue”. While most of the rooms popping into his head weren’t cavernous arenas\, the band’s extensive 2023 tour of South America in support of The Cure also pointed towards the opportunity for a bigger and more expansive sound. \nWE WERE JUST HERE was recorded at the Black Mountain studio just outside of the band’s hometown of Dundalk. As with Heart Under\, they brought in David Wrench (Frank Ocean\, FKA twigs) to mix the record. “It’s amazing how he seemingly added more melody to the songs just through processing\,” Noonan says\, relishing in handing the album to someone else after “our hands had been all over it\,” with Wrench pulling out even more depth and strength to Ball’s vocals. \nAs a band more interested in gesturing towards themes rather than ramming narratives down listeners’ throats\, WE WERE JUST HERE was the perfect title for the new album. The band reflect; “If you put the emphasis on any of the four words\, it can mean something different.” \nAs such\, you can ingest Ball’s lyrics as a conflicted and toxic grasp at positivity\, or a cathartic breakthrough into blissful\, true euphoria. Whichever way it’s received\, it arrives in the package of a revelatory new album\, one that takes Just Mustard’s music to ecstatic new places. For Heart Under\, a core concept of the album was to make listeners feel like they were travelling through a tunnel. With WE WERE JUST HERE\, they explode out into the blinding light.

DESCRIPTION:When Bleech 9:3 songwriters/guitarists Barry Quinlan and Sam Duffy first crossed paths in their early twenties\, it almost seemed inconceivable that they hadn’t met before. Throughout their tumultuous teenage years spent gigging in various projects around Dublin\, they’d lived near-parallel lives mired by the chaos-purgatory spiral of addiction; like two shadows cast by the same light but never touching. \nIn the throes of the early stages of recovery – when a better life still felt elusive and intangible\, something to be hoped for\, though not necessarily to be believed in – Barry and Sam were introduced to each other at a 12-step rehab programme. Barry soon signed up to be his new friend’s sponsor and take him through the process\, and felt energised by the similarities in their ambitions and worldview. \n“I think to find someone your own age\, with the same dreams as you\, from the same city and is also suffering from the same thing… we knew immediately that we could help each other\,” recalls Sam. “You can lose your mind thinking about how rare that is.” \nHowever unsteady their respective circumstances may have been at the time\, a brighter\, more creative future suddenly came into focus. In between “secret” writing sessions the foundations of Bleech 9:3 were born\, giving Barry and Sam purpose to move forward. “From the point of view of recovery and sobriety\, we shared an intrinsic understanding of each other. It felt like we were building something very\, very special\,” says Barry. \nThree years on from Barry and Sam’s chance meeting\, and Bleech 9:3 are on the crest of a wave. Completed by James Quinlan (bass) and Luke O’Neill (drums)\, the band are one of the most in-demand new live acts on the circuit\, after a storming 2025 saw them open up for Keo and Shame alongside booking sold-out headline shows. They became a word-of-mouth wonder in a matter of months\, earning early acclaim from press and radio\, before the year culminated in an electrifying three-night residency at London’s Blue Basement. \nWith only a handful of singles to their name\, Bleech 9:3 have established a sound that’s as evocative as it is crunchy and in-your-face\, deftly gliding between sharp\, irrepressible melodies and heavy blasts of distortion whenever the mood demands. They draw from a shared adoration of seminal acts like Radiohead\, Deftones and Nirvana\, as well as more contemporary names like Fontaines D.C. and Sleep Token. \nFollowing the release of new single ‘Cannonball’\, Bleech 9:3 stand on the edge of something momentous.
