DESCRIPTION:This new temporary exhibition within EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum asks how the millions of Irish people in England have fared over the past 200 years. Based on landmark economic history research using new big data analysis\, it tracks the wealth\, health\, and living standards of Irish migrants and families of Irish descent\, showing that the Irish were substantially poorer than their English neighbours for generations. \nNo Irish Need Apply? highlights the extraordinary contribution Irish women and men have made to the English economy and wider society through their hard work\, vibrant culture\, and political activism. The exhibition also includes the words and music of Irish migrants in England captured in Philip Donnellan’s 1965 film “The Irishmen”\, in collaboration with the Irish Film Institute. \nThe exhibition has been developed by the Department of Economic History at the London School of Economics & Political Science from research by Professor Neil Cummins and Professor Cormac Ó Gráda (UCD). It has been curated by Dr Christoper Kissane\, Engagement & Impact Lead\, LSE Dept of Economic History.

DESCRIPTION:Just Mustard’s heady blend of noise\, trip hop\, and electronic-influenced music has helped them build a reputation as one of Ireland’s most thrilling new bands\, both live and on record. \nTheir have announced their highly anticipated headline show in one of Dublin’s most iconic venues\, 3Olympia Theatre\, on Friday 1st May 2026. \n\n\nFormed in Dundalk\, Ireland\, Just Mustard consists of vocalist Katie Ball\, guitarists David Noonan (also backing vocals) and Mete Kalyoncuoglu\, bassist Robert Hodgers Clarke\, and drummer Shane Maguire. \nAcross their first two albums – 2018’s Wednesday and Partisan Records debut Heart Under from 2022 – the Irish band had become masters at creating haunting noise rock\, Katie Ball’s bewitching vocals swirling amongst the sounds like smoke. Heart Under\, defined by a maelstrom of dark industrial noise and dreamy textures\, explored themes of grief and longing\, with imagery of being submerged deep underwater and gasping for air. On the remarkable WE WERE JUST HERE\, the band reemerges\, leaning towards the light and the rush of euphoria. A pollyanna is defined as an excessively cheerful or optimistic person. For it to be the title and inspiration of the opening track and lead single from Just Mustard’s third album\, WE WERE JUST HERE\, signals a Damascene moment for the Dundalk five-piece. \nAcross these 10 tracks\, the band’s signature elements are still intact: guitars that are warped beyond recognition\, twisted sound design that draws from the luminary world of Aphex Twin and cavernous low ends. Guitarists David Noonan and Mete Kalyoncuoğlu continue to take their instruments to wild and unrecognizable places\, while the rhythm section of bassist Robert Hodgers Clarke and drummer Shane Maguire bring thudding sub bass and clattering percussion respectively. This time though\, it’s all been channeled into a warmer and more anthemic path\, opening up a new dimension of sound for the band. \n“I was trying to write more optimistically\, and feeling like a fraud sometimes\,” Ball says. “To find ‘POLLYANNA’ as a title\, I was looking up different words for toxic happiness. I was trying to achieve happiness even if it wasn’t always helpful. Euphoria was a word that kept coming up – trying to feel euphoric\, but at a cost.” \n“I don’t wanna go where I can’t feel a thing\,” she sings on the bold and melodic “DREAMER”\, while the album’s title track – the perfect mix of their thudding signature guitar sound and new commitment to lightness and warmth – explodes into technicolor noise after Ball’s declaration: “I just wanna make it feel good.” \nThe singer adds: “I was trying to put myself in places of physical joy to try and get that euphoric feeling.” Across the album\, songs draw from a wide spectrum of emotion and feeling\, with characters searching for ecstasy\, holding onto love and grasping for the rush of feeling alive. The vocals foreground these feelings\, and the intricately crafted compositions behind them back up the urge\, whether on the propulsive “SILVER” or the explosive “ENDLESS DEATHLESS”. \nProduced by Noonan and the band\, they aimed for directness and immediacy with their songwriting. While their approach to composition had previously been inspired by their love of electronic music\, starting with instrumental loops and textures and later weaving vocal ideas around them\, the band made a conscious decision to reverse engineer this process on WWJH. For them this meant adopting a more traditional method\, looking to the swirling rock and dynamic song structures of Nirvana and My Bloody Valentine and striving for big\, bold\, fully encompassing songs. \n“The vocal structure was the most important thing\,” Noonan says of how the songs for WE WERE JUST HERE were built. With choruses bursting with melody and brightness\, Ball’s vocals rise higher in the mix throughout the album\, partly as a purely sonic decision but also to hammer home feelings of positivity\, albeit sometimes conflicted ones. \nWhile it presents an expanded emotional palette for the band\, everything is still directed through their unique lens\, feeling Lynchian in the way it shoots for happiness but ends up with something stranger\, more complicated and more fascinating. \nThe strange and distinct universe the band create on record is reinforced with haunting interludes of warped speech and noise: “We wanted to create levels of texture in the album that could recall different layers of memory and time\, also injecting some of our own personal experience of creating into the finished tracks. We used snippets of voice memos from the writing process\, some elements are from the first recorded version or from various demos\, and in the studio used a mixture of digital and analogue equipment and 1/2” tape processing.” \nThe idea of place was also key when writing\, the band thinking about clubs and dancefloors as settings which directed them to strive for something immediate and urgent. “When we were writing the songs\, we could actually sometimes see different rooms and imagine playing this song in this venue”. While most of the rooms popping into his head weren’t cavernous arenas\, the band’s extensive 2023 tour of South America in support of The Cure also pointed towards the opportunity for a bigger and more expansive sound. \nWE WERE JUST HERE was recorded at the Black Mountain studio just outside of the band’s hometown of Dundalk. As with Heart Under\, they brought in David Wrench (Frank Ocean\, FKA twigs) to mix the record. “It’s amazing how he seemingly added more melody to the songs just through processing\,” Noonan says\, relishing in handing the album to someone else after “our hands had been all over it\,” with Wrench pulling out even more depth and strength to Ball’s vocals. \nAs a band more interested in gesturing towards themes rather than ramming narratives down listeners’ throats\, WE WERE JUST HERE was the perfect title for the new album. The band reflect; “If you put the emphasis on any of the four words\, it can mean something different.” \nAs such\, you can ingest Ball’s lyrics as a conflicted and toxic grasp at positivity\, or a cathartic breakthrough into blissful\, true euphoria. Whichever way it’s received\, it arrives in the package of a revelatory new album\, one that takes Just Mustard’s music to ecstatic new places. For Heart Under\, a core concept of the album was to make listeners feel like they were travelling through a tunnel. With WE WERE JUST HERE\, they explode out into the blinding light.

Barry soon signed up to be his new friend’s sponsor and take him through the process\, and felt energised by the similarities in their ambitions and worldview. \n“I think to find someone your own age\, with the same dreams as you\, from the same city and is also suffering from the same thing… we knew immediately that we could help each other\,” recalls Sam. “You can lose your mind thinking about how rare that is.” \nHowever unsteady their respective circumstances may have been at the time\, a brighter\, more creative future suddenly came into focus. In between “secret” writing sessions the foundations of Bleech 9:3 were born\, giving Barry and Sam purpose to move forward. “From the point of view of recovery and sobriety\, we shared an intrinsic understanding of each other. It felt like we were building something very\, very special\,” says Barry. \nThree years on from Barry and Sam’s chance meeting\, and Bleech 9:3 are on the crest of a wave. Completed by James Quinlan (bass) and Luke O’Neill (drums)\, the band are one of the most in-demand new live acts on the circuit\, after a storming 2025 saw them open up for Keo and Shame alongside booking sold-out headline shows. DESCRIPTION:Following the release of their second LP ‘Songs For The Spine’ last year\, Welsh Indie Rock group The Royston Club have now announced a headline Academy\, Dublin show for Saturday\, 2nd May 2026. \nThey say the bonds formed as teenagers are the strongest. In that case\, Wales’ main contenders The Royston Club are an unbreakable unit\, formed in Wrexham by schoolfriends Ben Matthias (Guitar)\, Tom Faithfull (lead vocals\, guitar) Dave Tute (Bass)\, later adding Sam Jones (drums). After the lineup was complete\, things moved fast: they hit the ground running\, performing a run of high-energy gigs in their hometown\, self-recording and releasing demos to an ever-expanding and devoted fanbase. \nIn 2021\, they signed to Run On Records (home of The Coral)\, quickly making their mark by releasing debut single Coasting\, which reached no.10 on the official vinyl charts. Their sound was established: anthemic indie hooks\, life-affirming melodies and ragged riffs – songs to soundtrack your life. Support slots soon came\, with the likes of Jamie Webster\, Blossoms and The Academic\, bookended by their own raucous headline tours. More studio time followed in Chapel Studios\, Lincoln; sessions which would eventually produce debut album Shaking Hips And Crashing Cars\, rocketing to number 16 on the official album charts\, selling out of all physical formats and subsequent special editions. \nIn the time after\, things snowballed. They sold out London’s Koko\, conquered Glastonbury three times\, headlined Focus Wales\, and picked up Hollywood actor and Wrexham FC owner Ryan Reynolds as a fan. Intermittent time on the road provided experience\, space in which to write. In early 2024\, they went to Kempston Street studio\, Liverpool\, with producer Richard Turvey (Blossoms\, The Coral) for a session that led to last month’s critically acclaimed comeback single The Patch Where Nothing Grows\, showing a new depth to both the band’s songwriting and performing\, paving the way for an album to be confirmed later in the year. \nIn the meantime\, the band’s rigorous work ethic continues; namely with slots at Portsmouth’s Victorious festival\, a couple of European dates\, headlining both This Feeling’s Bridlington By the Sea and Stockton’s Gathering Sounds festival\, Liam Gallagher’s Malta Weekender\, and two shows at Liverpool O2 Academy\, both of which have already sold out. DESCRIPTION:Literally translated as ‘Schubert journey’ the National Concert Hall presents ‘Schubertreise’. Dublin-born bass-baritone\, Conor Biggs\, and Belgian pianist\, Michel Stas\, have taken on the monumental challenge of performing the complete songs of Schubert in this thirty-seven part series taking place over fifteen years. \nThe final instalment in the series\, Winterreise is commonly acknowledged to be Schubert’s vocal masterpiece. The theme of love rejected and the alienation of the protagonist run through the cycle with unrelenting gloom\, but the overall effect on the listener is not to feel depressed\, but rather to wonder at Schubert’s compassion for the young man as he sets out on his journey\, a journey which ends in insanity (the Romantic Movement took to heart the idea that the romantic individual often imposed a self-exile\, as for example Byron’s Childe Harold).The twenty four relatively short songs (two sets of twelve each\, composed at six month’s interval) owe much to some of the earlier songs in the composer’s career\, but it is their cumulative effect\, devoid of sentimentality\, which makes the cycle so memorable\, and such a fitting close to Schubertreise. \nFifteen years in the making\, join us as we bring to a close the magnificent feat of musicianship that is Conor Biggs’ and Michel Stas’ Schubertreise.
