DESCRIPTION:This new temporary exhibition within EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum asks how the millions of Irish people in England have fared over the past 200 years. Based on landmark economic history research using new big data analysis\, it tracks the wealth\, health\, and living standards of Irish migrants and families of Irish descent\, showing that the Irish were substantially poorer than their English neighbours for generations. \nNo Irish Need Apply? highlights the extraordinary contribution Irish women and men have made to the English economy and wider society through their hard work\, vibrant culture\, and political activism. The exhibition also includes the words and music of Irish migrants in England captured in Philip Donnellan’s 1965 film “The Irishmen”\, in collaboration with the Irish Film Institute. \nThe exhibition has been developed by the Department of Economic History at the London School of Economics & Political Science from research by Professor Neil Cummins and Professor Cormac Ó Gráda (UCD). It has been curated by Dr Christoper Kissane\, Engagement & Impact Lead\, LSE Dept of Economic History.

DESCRIPTION:Chart topping folk group The Longest Johns are known the world over for their rollicking harmonies and raucous energy that are blowing new wind into the sails of traditional sea shanties and work songs. Formed in 2012 across a kitchen table in their native Bristol\, they bonded over a passion for traditional maritime folk music\, interwoven with a wry humour\, a taste for all things digital. and a flair for their own songwriting – ancient meets modern down by the docks.The Longest Johns have now announced a headline Academy\, Dublin show for Friday\, 8th May 2026. \nTickets from €29.00 (inc booking fee & venue facility fee) from Ticketmaster.ie on. Bookings subject to 12.5% service charge per ticket (max €10.50) \nConstant gigging over land and sea\, coupled with a rare command of social media and a string of quality releases saw them build a devoted fanbase at home and abroad. Their breakout moment came in 2021\, when their rendition of ‘Wellerman’ went viral on TikTok\, sparking the ‘Shanty Tok’ craze that became a global resurgence in sea shanty music and saw the band sign to Decca Records. \nThis year\, they have released their tenth album to round up the Pieces of Eight project – an EP a month for eight months culminating in the 24-track compilation. In the next 12 months they’ll continue to take folk music back to its roots by many routes\, playing more than 100 shows across the UK\, Europe\, North America and Australia. \nTheir love of heritage and tradition runs deep – in 2024 they released the fan-funded album Voyage with its companion book of original short stories\, artwork and lyrics. SUMMARY:Formal and Wild Landscapes by Fergus Martin
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Dr. Margarita Cappock \nAbout the exhibition\n‘Formal and Wild  Landscapes’ by Fergus Martin can be described as an exhibition of illusions and dreams.  It incorporates sculpture\, animation\, photographic prints and sound projections that connect at an emotional and subliminal level. \nEvery aspect of the exhibition\, from its commencement in the cube space to the culmination in the upper gallery\, provides the viewer with an invisible kinetic experience as the art works ‘ping’ against each other and relate sequentially to what the viewer will encounter next.   The animation has as its starting point an idea the artist had for a sculpture in a landscape and has taken on another life in the virtual world – a fantastical version of a pastoral scene. \nMartin notes\, ‘It was sparked by my always seeing hay bales from trains. They always seem mysterious to me scattered over the landscape and make me think of how leprechauns fooled people who wanted their gold by placing rocks or hawthorn trees everywhere.  These hay bales appear to have landed from space and sit there day and night in every season.’ Some of the works in this exhibition have featured in a recent exhibition at the magnificent early eighteenth-century Palazzo Birago in Turin in 2025.    Visitors now can view these works from an entirely different perspective here in the contemporary setting of the Lab gallery in Dublin. \nAbout the artist\nFergus Martin is an Irish painter\, sculptor and photographer\, known for his post-minimlaist aesthetic.  His most recent solo exhibitions were Space – New Prints – at Green On Red Gallery \, Dublin and Formal and Wild  – Landscapes at Palazzo Birago\, Turin\, Italy\, in Dublin.  Also in 2025\, he took part in the group exhibitions CAIM at Slane Castle\, curated by Jenn Ellis and Matilda Liu\, and Factory Made at Green On Red Gallery\, Dublin. \nIn 2020 Martin’s sculpture\, Oak\, was installed at the International Criminal Court in The Hague\, a gift from the Irish Government to the court; a new permanent sculpture\, Barrel was installed in the grounds of the Irish Museum of Modern Art\, Dublin.  Also in 2020\, his large-scale photograph\,Chair\, was purchased by the National Gallery of Ireland. \nMartin is a member of Aosdana and is represented by Green On Red Gallery\, Dublin. \n

SUMMARY:Kathy Prendergast: Stasis Field | Dublin by Dusk
DESCRIPTION:Kerlin Gallery is pleased to present Stasis Field\, an exhibition of sculpture\, work on paper and installation by Kathy Prendergast. \n  \n\n\n\n\nStasis Field features a selection of sculpture\, work on paper and installation\, offering an intimate experience that intertwines memory\, transformation\, and the passage of time. Prendergast uses an array of textile\, chalk\, stone\, fabric\, wool and found objects to create art that resonates on both personal and universal levels. \nSince the beginning of her career\, maps have been a core element of Prendergast’s practice. Reimagining maps through artistic intervention\, Prendergast subverts historic symbols of power\, identity and exploration\, creating works that reflect more personal and emotional narratives. Included in Stasis Field are hand-coloured works which invite viewers to reflect on human connections to land\, borders\, and the histories they carry. Pigmented chalk\, gouache and watercolour create a saturated geological installation\, merging hand sculpted objects with collected cartography. In Stasis unites the physical and emotional\, featuring a collection of colourful hand-painted volcanic maps\, creating a kaleidoscopic reinterpretation of the peaks Chimbarazo to Mount Kenya. Through colour\, the static arial views radiate an energetic sense of movement. In Comet\, rust coloured string radiates from an encased roll of fabric and wool. A carefully placed pattern of stones sit on the webbed string\, some like small anchors\, others seemingly guiding the material further. Elsewhere against the gallery wall\, a painted red branch stretches three metres high\, coupled with a vibrant painted arial of Cotopaxi\, Ecudaor.

DESCRIPTION:William Blake\, a visionary artist and poet\, was a defining force in Romanticism. His imaginative and unconventional works continue to inspire today. This exhibition\, curated by Tate in partnership with the National Gallery of Ireland\, presents a selection of Blake’s most iconic works of art\, alongside paintings and drawings by his contemporaries. \nBlake’s world was one of fantasy\, imagination\, and the ancient past\, filled with fantastical creatures and visions of the underworld\, expressed through a wide variety of media. By placing him in context – among the artists he admired and those he inspired – the exhibition offers insight into an era of extraordinary originality and innovation in late-eighteenth and early nineteenth-century art. Featuring over 100 works\, including by James Barry (1741–1806)\, Henry Fuseli (1741–1825)\, John Hamilton Mortimer (1740–1779)\, Thomas Rowlandson (1757–1827)\, and J.M.W. Exchanging Kalashnikovs for guitars after participating in the 1990 Tuareg rebellion\, Tinariwian really are rock ’n’ roll rebels\, drawing people into their growling vocals\, spacey guitar lines and clapping rhythms. Over the past two decades\, they’ve been popular and regular guests at festivals all around the world where they’ve done a lot to raise awareness about Tuareg culture and identity.

DESCRIPTION:Alan Stivell was born on January 6\, 1944\, in Riom\, Auvergne\, during World War II. His father\, Georges Cochevelou\, of Cornish (Gourin) and Vannetais (Pontivy) Breton descent\, had lived in Paris after World War I. His mother\, Fanny\, whose parents had diverse roots (including Russian and French)\, embraced her husband’s Breton identity. Because of the war\, the family moved frequently: one brother was born in Paris\, another in Épinal\, and Alan himself in Riom. He therefore had no particular ties to Auvergne. \nAfter the Liberation\, instead of returning to Brittany\, the family settled in Paris within the Breton diaspora. A visit to relatives in La Trinité-sur-Mer proved decisive: at the age of five\, discovering his father’s homeland deeply moved him. Around the same time\, he began studying piano and met composer Paul Le Flem. \nIn 1952\, his two brothers joined the Breton scouting movement Bleimor\, while his father built the first modern Breton harp. Immersed in a strongly Breton cultural atmosphere\, Alan took his first harp lessons in April 1953—marking the beginning of a prestigious artistic path. In November of that year\, at the Maison de la Bretagne in Paris\, the public rediscovered the Celtic harp after centuries of neglect\, captivated by the nine-year-old performing Pedenn evit Breizh. \nFrom the early 1950s (from age nine)\, his recitals stirred audiences at UNESCO\, Vannes Cathedral\, and the Olympia in Paris\, helping to revive the Celtic harp. Deeply passionate about Celtic civilization in all its aspects\, he would conceptualize\, modernize\, and popularize its music. \nAs early as 1958\, he designed the first electric harps and began sketching a symphony (though he chose not to attend the Conservatoire). He made his first recordings—Musique gaélique and Telenn geltiek—and soon developed the idea of Celtic rock. A member of the Bleimor scouts\, he acquired the Breton language (passing the Trec’h kentañ exam)\, immersed himself in traditional music and dance\, and graduated from the College of Piping in Scotland. He led the Bleimor bagad to the title of Champion of Brittany in 1966 and twice more\, also winning duo championships at Gourin (1966\, 1968\, 1969). \nIn 1966\, he began singing publicly at the American Center in Paris\, Chez Michou in Quimper\, and in Italy—marking the true start of his professional career. In 1967\, he signed his first international contract with Philips-Fontana (now Universal). In 1968\, he was invited by the Moody Blues to perform at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall. That same year\, he met Marie-José\, his lifelong companion. \nAfter releasing the single Brocéliande – Son ar chistr in July 1970 (a song widely covered worldwide)\, his album Reflets launched his conquest of a broader audience. A manifesto of musical fusion\, it anticipated what would later be called “world music.” His third album\, Renaissance de la harpe celtique (1971)\, inspired thousands of harpists worldwide and was nominated for a Grammy Award; it also received the Grand Prix Charles Cros (and in 2019\, the In Honorem award for his lifetime achievement). \nHis rock-Breton fusion piece Pop-Plinn\, followed by the legendary February 1972 concert and live album À l’Olympia (two million copies sold)\, sparked the “Stivell phenomenon\,” transforming Brittany’s image. From 1973 onward\, his international career expanded across Europe\, America\, and Australia\, performing in major venues and rock festivals. \nHe later produced his own records\, including Keltia III and Live à Dublin. Notable works followed: Trema’n Inis (dedicated to Breton poets)\, Before Landing\, Journée à la maison\, and his Symphonie celtique (1979–80)\, often performed at the Festival Interceltique de Lorient and prestigious venues such as London’s Royal Festival Hall and Dublin’s Olympia. \nThough uncomfortable with “star” status\, he continued to innovate throughout the 1980s and beyond. His album Harpes du Nouvel Âge received an Indie Award in the United States. In 1993\, Again (featuring Kate Bush) and its tour were a major success. He was awarded the Collar of the Order of the Ermine in 1994. \nHe continued collaborating internationally (Brian Boru\, 1 Douar with Youssou N’Dour\, Jim Kerr\, Paddy Moloney\, John Cale). In 2000\, an asteroid was named after him by Czech astronomer Miloš Tichý. \nThe 21st century brought anniversary releases (Au-delà des mots)\, books (Telenn\, la harpe bretonne)\, the avant-garde album Explore\, and Emerald (2009). He became honorary president of the Cultural Council of Brittany and was promoted to Commander of Arts and Letters in 2012. Later works include AMzer (2015)\, Human-Kelt (2018\, featuring Andrea Corr\, Francis Cabrel\, Bob Geldof\, Yann Tiersen\, and others)\, his autobiography Stivell par Alan\, and the symphonic live double album Liberté-Roazhon (2024). \nHis concerts—whether electro-world-rock\, symphonic (notably with the Orchestre National de Bretagne)\, or intimate performances in churches—reveal multiple artistic facets. Recent tours include Cœur & Âme / Kalon hag Ene and the Liberté Tour\, following the unveiling of a statue in his honor in Carhaix. \nThroughout his life\, Alan Stivell has been driven by curiosity\, innovation\, and cultural cross-fertilization\, while remaining deeply rooted in Breton and Celtic heritage. A pioneer of folk-rock\, ambient\, and especially world music (which he theorized as early as 1970)\, he has consistently advocated a global music that preserves human diversity. \nTo date\, he remains the only Breton artist whose entire body of work\, centered on Breton culture\, has achieved such significant international impact.
