DESCRIPTION:Literally translated as ‘Schubert journey’ the National Concert Hall presents ‘Schubertreise’. Dublin-born bass-baritone\, Conor Biggs\, and Belgian pianist\, Michel Stas\, have taken on the monumental challenge of performing the complete songs of Schubert in this thirty-seven part series taking place over fifteen years. \nThe final instalment in the series\, Winterreise is commonly acknowledged to be Schubert’s vocal masterpiece. The theme of love rejected and the alienation of the protagonist run through the cycle with unrelenting gloom\, but the overall effect on the listener is not to feel depressed\, but rather to wonder at Schubert’s compassion for the young man as he sets out on his journey\, a journey which ends in insanity (the Romantic Movement took to heart the idea that the romantic individual often imposed a self-exile\, as for example Byron’s Childe Harold).The twenty four relatively short songs (two sets of twelve each\, composed at six month’s interval) owe much to some of the earlier songs in the composer’s career\, but it is their cumulative effect\, devoid of sentimentality\, which makes the cycle so memorable\, and such a fitting close to Schubertreise. \nFifteen years in the making\, join us as we bring to a close the magnificent feat of musicianship that is Conor Biggs’ and Michel Stas’ Schubertreise.

This year\, the festival will honour the 300th anniversary of Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels with a special series of events. \nThe programme for the festival was officially unveiled at a ceremony in Marsh’s Library and speaking at the launch festival curator Grace McEvoy remarked: \n“It is my honour to launch the programme for this year’s Culture Date with Dublin 8. This year’s theme\, ‘Songlines of the City\,’ reimagines Dublin 8 as a place where the streets\, stories\, and songs reveal the neighborhood’s cultural DNA\, while ‘Gulliver 300’ reimagines Swift’s legacy with bold\, playful events where myth\, literature\, and local stories collide.” \nFlagship Events \nAmong the flagship events\, the Guinness Choir will celebrate its 75th anniversary with a special concert in St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Thursday\, 7th May. The title of the event\, “The City of Our Dreaming\,” comes from a poem commissioned by Paula Meehan to mark the occasion. \nAt the National Stadium on Saturday 9 May\, author and podcaster Donal Fallon hosts In The Ring: Dan Donnelly & Dublin’s Boxing Heroes\, a unique event celebrating the legendary 19th-century bare-knuckle boxer. Blending boxing history with poetry\, music and live performance\, the evening features contributions from Damien Dempsey\, Brian Kerr\, Barry McGovern\, Kelly McLoughlin\, Terry O’Neill\, Niamh Ní Charra and Emmet O’Brien\, followed on Sunday 10 May by a tag-team wrestling and slam poetry event. \nOn Wednesday 6 May\, The First Count: A Night in 1926 takes place at The Fumbally Stables\, hosted by Shite Talk: An Irish History Podcast. Culture Date with Dublin 8 celebrates this landmark with a series of events exploring Swift’s life\, legacy and enduring relevance. \nHighlights include a keynote lecture by Swift scholar Dr Brendan Twomey at St Patrick’s University Hospital\, examining the themes and cultural impact of Gulliver’s Travels\, followed by a guided walk and rare access to the historic Board Room\, where guests can view a selection of Swift artefacts including his writing desk and death mask. Swift’s Dublin\, a specially curated walking tour\, will trace the writer’s connections to the city\, from St Patrick’s Cathedral to the streets and spaces that shaped his work. \nAcross the district\, St Patrick’s Cathedral will open the Deanery\, where Swift once lived\, for special tours\, while Marsh’s Library will present an exhibition of original copies of Gulliver’s Travels. A range of additional activities will bring the story to life for all ages\, including Swift-themed walking tours\, a hands-on Gulliver’s Swap workshop creating DIY luggage from reclaimed textiles\, a young explorers adventure tour through Dublin 8’s green spaces\, and a Lilliputian Morning Rave featuring DJ Billy Scurry. A special Gulliver 300 collectible postcard\, illustrated by John Rooney\, will also be available during the festival. \nMusic \nOver the course of the festival\, churches\, distilleries and pubs across Dublin 8 will come alive with music\, transforming the neighbourhood into a vibrant\, multi-venue stage. \nThe Church of St Catherine & St James in Donore is set to become a uniquely atmospheric setting for a series of standout performances\, with Tom Dunne\, Fiachna O’Braonáin and Alan Connor performing on Wednesday 6 May\, followed by Phelim Drew bringing his Remembering Ronnie show to the space on Thursday 7 May. On Friday 8 May\, Camille O’Sullivan performs in the stunning surroundings of Christ Church Cathedral. \nElsewhere\, Sofar Sounds Dublin hosts an intimate night at Teeling Whiskey Distillery\, while a dynamic collaboration with BIMM Dublinwill see emerging artists take over venues across the district\, spotlighting the next generation of talent rooted in the area. An Góilín Traditional Singers bring the songs of Dublin 8 to life through a series of outdoor performances woven into a unique walking trail across the neighbourhood\, while St. George’s Brass Band will perform a lively outdoor concert in St Audoen’s Park. \nAlso on the programme\, the Westland Trio Baroque Ensemble presents Between Renaissance and Baroque at St Audoen’s Church\, an evocative concert journeying through medieval to Renaissance music from Ireland and England\, exploring the rich musical heritage of these islands in one of Dublin’s most historic settings. Raidió Rí-Rá presents AIRNEÁN\, an evening of music as Gaeilge bringing together new songwriters and traditional musicians\, offering a platform for some of the most exciting voices in contemporary Irish-language music. \nTalks & Tours \nDiscover Dublin 8 through a series of distinctive tours and talks that reveal the area’s hidden histories and lesser-told stories. Highlights include a special Alternative Tour of Kilmainham Gaol\, offering rare access to parts of the prison not usually open to the public\, and The Lost Prisons of Dublin 8\, a walking tour uncovering the sites of long-forgotten jails across the city. Dublin Decoded leads a Hidden Portobello tour exploring the area’s rich past as “Little Jerusalem” and its connections to literature\, film and migration\, while The National Archives of Ireland presents 1926 Census clinics\, giving audiences the chance to explore this landmark moment in Irish history with expert guidance. \nHistorian Liz Gillis presents a powerful talk at Richmond Barracks on the four Dublin 8 men executed following the 1916 Rising\, while a live edition of the Three Castles Burning podcast with Donal Fallon takes place at The Lord Edward. \nAdditional highlights include a lecture with David Caron at National College of Art and Design exploring the area’s stained glass heritage\, guided tours of Bully’s Acre Cemetery\, and a fascinating OPW talk on the medieval belltower of St Audoen’s Church. At Farmleigh\, visitors can explore both the poetic landscape of the estate through a Seamus Heaney-inspired walking tour and the social legacy of the Guinness Brewery through a talk on its pioneering approach to worker welfare\, amongst many others. \nFringe & Community \nAlongside the main programme\, a vibrant strand of fringe and community-led events brings together grassroots creativity\, local voices and shared experiences across Dublin 8. \nFrom exhibitions and installations to performances\, workshops and gatherings\, the programme reflects the energy of the area at street level. Highlights include a screening of Chats in the Flats at Donore Credit Union\, capturing working-class voices from the community\, alongside exhibitions by Liberties-based artists Duc Van Pham and Valerie Gannon\, offering intimate portraits of people and everyday life in the area. At Tailors’ Hall\, Throwing Shapes Artist in Residence Camilla Hanney presents her ceramic installation A Liberties Feast\, a striking and immersive work rooted in local tradition. \nCreative activity unfolds across the neighbourhood\, with a Dublin 8 art party hosted by Drink and Draw with Alternative Dublin at Drop Dead Twice\, socially engaged projects by NCAD students at Studio 8 in the Irish Museum of Modern Art\, and an exhibition trail by artists Ishmael Claxton\, Jye O’Sullivan and María Baez embedded in local businesses. The Liberties Weavers present a pop-up textile museum at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral\, continuing the area’s rich craft heritage. \nParticipation and connection are central throughout\, from LEGROOM Collective’s immersive theatre and DJ night All My Friends Are in Australia to the Rialto Community Arts Festival launch and open mic\, celebrating emerging voices. Audiences are also invited into La Catedral Studios for a special open studio evening\, while hands-on workshops like Branch Hair Studio’s ‘Studio Parents’ Hair School SOS’ offer practical\, social experiences. \nCommunity-led storytelling and heritage remain at the core of this strand. 1\,000 Waves: Hands of the City\, an interactive art ritual by Unity in the Community\, invites participants to explore belonging through shared stories and collective expression\, while projects from The Liberties Community Project and The Robert Emmet History Group\, and The Tenters Celebrated Heritage Group\, highlight the depth of local knowledge and lived experience. DESCRIPTION:An album for sleeping and waking\, walking and driving\, hunting and fishing\, for loitering outside a roadhouse on the haunted tundra. Okay in elevators\, not great for dinner. On\nCaveman Wakes Up\, Friendship’s new album and second for Merge Records\, the band’s historically capacious definition of country music grows wider still. Shambolic guitars are offset by flute pads\, bleary poetry is set against a Motown rhythm section\, a song about Jerry Garcia and First Lady Betty Ford fades out with a drum solo\, like if Talk Talk came from a dingy Philadelphia basement and was fronted by James Tate. Songwriter Dan Wriggins’ ragged baritone cuts through eleven murky\, swirling country-rock songs with profound lyrical substance and sincerity. Like an alarm clock incorporated into the edge of a dream\, Caveman Wakes Up belongs equally to the conscious and subconscious mind\, fraught with background\, steeped in reference and experimentation\, delivered casually and as a dire warning\, dedicated\, above all\, to music’s creative\nsoul. \nOver the years\, dedication has paid off. Friendship has become a kind of reverse supergroup\, wherein the band itself and each individual member are located centrally in an increasingly prominent scene of young folk and country musicians and songwriters. Drummer Michael Cormier O’Leary leads the instrumental collective Hour and\, along with bassist Jon Samuels\, runs Dear Life Records\, home to friends and peers who count Friendship as a major influence including MJ Lenderman\, Florry\, and Fust. (Samuels also plays lead guitar in MJ Lenderman and the Wind). Guitarist Peter Gill’s band 2nd Grade records prolifically. Wriggins began writing the songs of Caveman Wakes Up on a downtuned classical guitar of Lenderman’s and finished on a barely tuned piano in an apartment he shared with Sadurn’s G DeGroot. In the summer of 2023\, Wriggins had just left the Iowa Writers’ Workshop\, where his love for poetry and mistrust for the academic poetry world grew in tandem. A relationship fell apart\, and Wriggins crashed for several weeks at Lenderman and Wednesday’s Karly Hartzman’s home in North Carolina\, where he recorded the first demos of “Resident Evil\,” “All Over the World\,” and “Love Vape.” Wriggins returned to Philadelphia\, and the band got to work on new ideas\, finally tracking the album in five days with engineer Jeff Ziegler (Mary Lattimore\, War on Drugs). Wriggins recorded vocals\nwith Love the Stranger engineer Bradford Kreiger\, and organ\, violin (Jason Calhoun)\, and flute (Adelyn Strei) were recorded by Lucas Knapp in a West Philadelphia church. Lyrically\, Caveman Wakes Up covers familiar Friendship ground—the sacred is profaned and the profane sanctified. On “All Over the World\,” a landscaper “[feels] the beating heart of God/ laying down a roll of sod.” Characters complain about work and marvel at love. Here\, however\, we get Wriggins’ first real confrontation with depression\, in “Hollow Skulls\,” “All Over the World\,” and “Resident Evil\,” where the soul wages its perpetual war against darkness and stagnation. It often loses. The verses of “Hollow Skulls” are punctuated by passages of musical emptiness\, a single suspended chord\, and brushes on a snare drum. When Wriggins complains about a roommate\, shouting\, “Who’s that shithead in my living room/ playing Resident Evil\,” it’s abundantly clear there is no roommate\, that the evil resides within. \nCaveman Wakes Up showcases Friendship’s particular genius for visionary arrangement\, indebted equally across generations to the folk-rock canon of Neil Young\, Joni Mitchell\, and Emmylou Harris\, to indie stalwarts like Yo La Tengo and Merge labelmates Lambchop\, to contemporaries like Lomelda and ML Buch. Several of the songs employ fade-outs\, jokingly referred to in the lyrics of “Love Vape\,” and there are other elements lifted from Motown and ’70s ballads: locked-in drum patterns\, bass intervals\, sentimental string arrangements. Each reference is pushed past genre\, swirling and repeating\, into something new and squarely belonging to the Friendship sound. On “Free Association\,” “Artex\,” and “Wildwood in January\,” the groove is established so that other sounds can come and go seamlessly; Mellotron patches\, piano flurries and stabs\, and clean guitar melodies\, teeming textures disguised in unity. As a work of music production\, Caveman Wakes Up is Friendship’s most advanced yet\, another testament to the band’s devotion and care. \nA droning chord calms nerves. A surreal poem moves us not because it’s familiar but because it grows\, stirs up the stagnant waters. A sizzle in the brain stem. Negative capability. Caveman Wakes Up is dreamy\, luscious new growth for a band that has become an increasingly verdant oasis in the crescent of indie country civilization. Sure to excite and mystify\, to continue growing\, to cause new life.

Hailed by The Washington Post as one of “23 composers to watch in 2023\,” Finola is an Irish composer currently living in Paris\, where she is a Fellow at Columbia University’s Institute for Ideas and Imagination. Catherine is a saxophonist living in New Mexico; she has been called a “virtuosic firebrand\,” by The Brooklyn Rail and “a revelation\,” by The Jazz Magazine. \nIn an opening set of improvisation\, Catherine will perform some of her own compositions and will be joined by violist Joanna Mattrey.

Four previously unheard tracks are drawn from the vaults\, including the squidgy ELO-stomp of drummer\, Daf Ieuan-led Rock ‘N’ ‘Roll Flu’\, plus the distorted space-jam of ‘Cae Marw’\, the band’s deep-bass sketch of Palo Alto and ghostly\, percussive morsel of ‘Bedw Arian’. \nThe album followed six\, previous albums by the band\, including their statement debut album\, Fuzzy Logic in 1996\, offering era-crystalising singles\, ‘God! Show Me Magic’ and ‘Hometown Unicorn’\, melding an attention-demanding mix of literary\, narcotic and musical influences. Maintaining a shape that was ill-fitting in the jigsaw of other 90’s guitar bands\, their follow-up\, UK Top Ten album\, Radiator brought the hooky squelch of the bona fide indie dancefloor classic\, ‘The International Language of Screaming’. The next decade saw the release of the first Top 20-charting\, Welsh language album\, Mwng (2000)\, followed by further experimentation and commercial success with Rings Around The World (2001) and Phantom Power (2003). \nLove Kraft’s sense of cohesion\, collaboration and free-flow of rich harmony has been credited to the five-piece escaping Wales to record in the shimmering heat of Figueres\, Catalunya. Bringing famed Beastie Boys producer\, Mario Caldato Jr along with them for the ride\, the travelling band’s stay in the Catalonian hometown of Salvador Dali included found sounds\, boozy petrol stations\, gastronomic revelations and\, finally\, a rich album of strings\, synths and opulent vocal harmonies. \nWhile eventually finding their way to Baha\, near to Rio di Janeiro to mix the album (where four fifths of the band undertook lessons in Portuguese and the legendary Abbey Road 1968-built mixing desk\, EMI TG12345 took up residence)\, involving another two weeks under the sun\, Love Kraft’s story began in Wales and Pleasure Foxxx Studios\, where the band began to craft the album’s songs. Embracing the landmark of a seventh album\, notably coming after the 2004 release of their first ‘best of…’ package\, Songbook: The Singles\, Vol. 1\, Super Furry Animals pooled ideas and affected further democracy in their songwriting\, taking a load off traditional lead-writer and front man\, Gruff Rhys\, and sharing in lead vocal duties (aside from the microphone-averse bassist\, Guto Pryce). \nGiving up only one single in Lazer Beam\, backed on release with perhaps a definitive\, lost ‘classic Furries’ track\, ‘Sunny Seville’ and the CD-only ‘Colonise the Moon’ (both featured amongst the reissue’s extensive track listing)\, Super Furry Animals remained true to Love Kraft’s easy-going\, love-lorn concept. Accompanied by a video directed by Welsh filmmaking duo\, Palumbo & Coch\, the single reached the UK Singles Chart Top 30\, the promotional trail cooling thereafter\, saved for an extensive tour of Europe\, North America and the Far East. That trip included stadium gigs opening for Oasis in the UK\, a coast-to-coast US tour backed by the upcoming Caribou and festivals in Istanbul\, Japan and Taiwan.

The 2023 follow-up Secret Measure expanded it in every direction\, with more layers\, more interplay\, and gutsier writing. \nNow\, three records in\, they embrace letting go of expectation. Pink Silence is unafraid to go big in the quest to make something lasting. With Owen Pallett\, Adrian Utley (Portishead)\, and Stuart Braithwaite (Mogwai) contributing\, this mission is supported by some of their musical heroes. \nThe record returns to the feeling of no longer having someone who was a part of your life\, whether that’s in the form of a loved one\, a relationship or a friend. “It does sound quite morbid\, but it felt nice”\, Paul says\, “because it encouraged a reflection on the people I have in my life who I’m close with. It made me cherish them all the more and be present in my time and appreciation of them.” \nCloth are a special partnership on the stage\, in the studio and as people. Three records in\, that partnership solidifies once again. “I think it’s because we’re best friends\,” Rachael says. “Like any siblings\, we definitely have fallouts and disagreements\, and that travels into creative discussions as well. But for the most part\, we share the same vision and ambition for what our music can be.” \nWith Pink Silence\, the band entered the studio to make the ten strongest songs they possibly could\, and they left a stronger band.
