SUMMARY:Bec O'Malley
DESCRIPTION:In 2024\, Bec O’Malley went on a hike in the Peak District with his friends. He’d taken his acoustic guitar with him and decided to film a quick video of him covering Dylan Gossett’s ‘Coal’ while out on the misty paths. In the short clip\, the young musician forgets the words a few lines in\, but there was something about it that connected with those who saw it on their algorithm. Perhaps it was the unpolished charm of the video – mistake left in\, cut off before he could try again – or his resonant vocals that hit in even just a few seconds\, or a combination of the two. The likes quickly poured in\, more so than for any other video he’d posted on TikTok before\, igniting interest in this unknown talent. \nO’Malley’s name may have been undiscovered when that video was posted\, but by that point\, he’d already been playing music and writing his own songs for years. Growing up in Stockport\, he first picked up a guitar aged 12\, learning the basics from his cousin and fleshing out the rest from YouTube tutorials. A few years later\, his interest turned from simply playing others’ creations to working on his own\, first in bands with school friends\, and then on his own. Along the way\, his sound evolved\, pulling in new influences and building the foundations for the music he makes today. “I was doing the indie stuff for so long\, and I was just getting bored of it\,” he explains. “I started listening to more of the modern side of country – Zach Bryan\, Morgan Wallen\, those guys – and it just revamped it in my head.” \n  \nRather than jumping on the bandwagon of the surging popularity of country music in the UK\, the genre is something that’s always been around O’Malley. He comes from an Irish family where music was always playing around the house and at family gatherings\, and “they’d always play all the country music – a bit of American country\, Irish country”. \nThe 23-year-old’s material\, though\, is a balance – one that draws from a world of Nashville skylines and pick-up trucks\, but also from his lived experience in the UK. Instead of parodying the language and topics of his American counterparts\, he puts his reality front and centre\, writing about things he and the people around him have seen or been through. “You don’t see many trucks around here\,” he laughs. “It just wouldn’t feel right to [copy US country] – it’d feel like role play.” It’s an approach he sees as having a unique allure to it: “No one in the States is going to sing it from a perspective that I’d sing it from.” \nSonically\, too\, he merges two disparate parts – country and indie – and\, rather than be seen as someone predominantly in one lane\, he wants to be known for his distinctive blend of them both. A love for The La’s\, Sam Fender and Oasis have fuelled the indie side of his writing\, with the latter band in particular having a huge impact on him – not just musically\, but in attitude and ambition\, too. The Gallaghers’ hometown of Burnage is just down the road from Stockport\, and their influence seeped into O’Malley’s surroundings early on. “You see Oasis and how big they got when they’re from just down the road\, and it’s like\, ‘If they can do it\, why can’t I?’” he reasons. \nWhile posting on social media\, O’Malley also built up his following and learned his craft the old-fashioned way\, too. During his university course in Liverpool\, he’d return to Manchester on weekends to play in the city’s Irish bars\, sometimes playing multiple sets in a day. Those venues proved the perfect performance classrooms as he battled rowdy crowds and learned how to get them on his side. “Sometimes you’ll get people who are quiet\, but then as the night goes on\, everyone gets a bit more pissed and scream and shout\,” he says. “We’ve learned how to deal with them – and have a night with them\, as well.” \nSince those days\, he’s been invited to play at Manchester’s Neighbourhood Festival\, support Weston Lonely and was scheduled to support Jeff Lynne’s ELO at their farewell show at BST Hyde Park\, until Lynne’s medical issues meant the gig had to be scrapped (more high profile bookings are set for 2026\, with appearances at State Fayre\, Kendall Calling\, Country Calling Festival and Highways’ Songwriters Round at Royal Albert Hall in the offing). By November 2025\, O’Malley had booked – and sold out – his first headline gig at Manchester’s famed Deaf Institute. These bookings would be impressive for any emerging artist\, but become even more so when you consider that they all came without O’Malley releasing a single song. \nFor a long time\, the rising artist’s tagline has been “singer with no songs out” – a slogan that gets more powerful when witnessed beneath ever-growing follower counts. Soon\, though\, that line will have to change – first\, following the release of his debut single\, ‘Let You Go’\, and later\, with the arrival of his first EP. “It’s the end of an era – although I might just change it to ‘singer with one song’. When the Grammy comes\, I’ll just say ‘singer with a Grammy’\,” he quips. \nAlthough only just officially released\, ‘Let You Go’ has already had a big impact on O’Malley’s journey. The first video he posted online of him playing the track was the first clip of original material to really take off\, racking up over 900\,000 views. Every day since\, users have asked him when he’s releasing it. \nAs a first single\, it captures the heart of O’Malley’s songwriting – inventive storytelling that’s woven into a sound that feels both familiar and fresh\, all delivered in his gravelly northern drawl. “I’d be crazy to ever let you go\,” he sings\, a line that’s spurred fans on to use the track in wedding videos. In reality\, the track takes on the perspective of a stalker\, detailing their thoughts as they watch from afar. \n‘Let You Go’ highlights the storytelling that sits at the core of O’Malley’s engaging lyricism\, something he grew into on a writing trip to Nashville. “When I was first writing songs\, I was all about melody\,” he explains. “Getting more involved in the country scene makes you think about words more\, and I spent a bit of time out in Nashville\, and they’re all so clever with lyrics and how the story flows from start to finish. It made me love the story side of it.” \n‘Two People Talking’\, a stomping earworm rich in detail\, picks up on another angle of that way of writing – rather than putting the musician in someone else’s shoes\, it twists his personal experiences into a tale shot through with wise takeaways. “Hearts get broke when hopes get higher\,” he warns at one point. “It’s saying\, ‘Don’t get your hopes up too high because it’s not happened yet’\,” O’Malley says. The mellower ‘See It From Here’\, meanwhile\, paints a picture of romantic sunsets and peaceful road trips. \nAs O’Malley properly kickstarts his path and becomes a singer with some songs out\, he’s keen to maintain the balance he’s already found: “I love the stripped back side of music where it can just be a fiddle\, guitar and some vocals\, but then I love the poppy side of things too\, so it’s about finding a good middle ground. I don’t know where it’s gonna go\, but it’s about putting out the songs that feel the most me and seeing what happens.” One thing that is certain\, though\, is that he’s driving forward with an unlimited sense of ambition. “The goal is to be the biggest artist\,” he says confidently. “I just want to play big shows.” With songs as strong as the ones in his arsenal\, reaching the big heights seems inevitable.

Recently returned from a very successful trip to Los Angeles where he performed at MUSEXPO and as a special guest at the International Music Industry Person of the Year awards Shobsy has just announced a headline Show at Whelan’s\, Dublin on Sat March 22nd 2025. \nShobsys first four solo releases ‘Vanity’\, ‘Driven’\, ‘The Way We Are’  & ‘Entertainment’ were  received exceptionally with support given both here at home and overseas including; EARMILK\, Pop Matters\, Nialler 9\, Hot Press\, Today FM and Record Of The Day amongst others. ‘Entertainment’ was selected as ‘Track of the Week’ on 2fm. \nShobsy has performed numerous sold out shows at prestigious Irish venues over the past year including at The Workman’s Club\, The Academy & The National Concert Hall.  In July he was one of a handful of Irish acts (alongside Dermot Kennedy & Gavin James) invited to perform at a special Irish Music Industry showcase event hosted by the President of Ireland at the President’s residence in Dublin. \nA performance on Ireland’s Biggest TV show ‘The Late Late Show’ would lead to far reaching additional attention for this Dublin based singer- songwriter and live performer. DESCRIPTION:With the humble beginning of a demo showcasing his first moments picking up a guitar and finding his voice in 2019\, longtime experimental music composer Drew Collins stepped into the next phase of his songwriting career as Sundots. \nJoined by familiar faces of the Connecticut DIY scene\, friends Jake Fucci\, Austin Traver\, and Nick Restivo have been a fundamental part of the band’s journey in translating their bedroom ‘studio’ songs to a live setting. \nThe music combines the feelings from freak-folk and ambient to slowcore and indie-rock in a way that comes across as both sincere and playful. Many of the songs showcase Drew’s heart on his sleeve\, with an almost stream-of-consciousness approach to lyric writing. ‘Honeyspot’\, the band’s most recent record from 2024\, displayed a newly refined direction while reflecting on themes of youth\, maturity\, love\, and fantasy. \nPaying homage to the previously mentioned demo tape\, appropriately named ‘room’\, Drew has a collection of five more solo recordings on the way due sometime this summer.

DESCRIPTION:Swapmeet is a 4-piece band from South Australia composed of Venus O’Broin (guitar\, vocals)\, Joshua Doherty (bass)\, Maxwell Elphick (guitar\, drums\, vocals)\, and Jack Medlyn (guitar\, drums\, vocals). \nHaving recently caught the ear of American indie label Winspear\, the band is readying their debut album and offering a taste of the newmaterial with “I Know!”\, a cathartic and buoyant debut single for their new label home. \nRevved up with gleaming\, fuzzy guitars and energetic percussion\, the new track blurs jangle pop\, shoegaze\, and alt-rock with tongue-in-cheek precision. The group met as teenagers in the early 2020s while playing in various projects around the Adelaide music scene and bonded over their love of 90s alternative. \nThey soon started writing music together and released their debut single in late 2023 and quickly returned with their debut EP\, Oxalis\, in mid-2024. Now\, the band has started moving out of local pub gigs and into big venues\, opening for international touring artists across the whole of Australia\, and recently won the Emerging Artist & Best Performance Award at SXSW Sydney for their charismatic live show.

Somehow richer and more devastating than its predecessor\, their second EP sees them delve into a slightly poppier soundscape while affirming their entry into a canon of female singer-storytellers spinning gold from the ordinary fabric of everyday life\, recalling elements of Phoebe Bridgers\, Adrienne Lenker and Joni Mitchell.

In their solo existence\, Victoria works as a beekeeper and\nStone as a self-taught\ncomputer programmer\, but when they get together\, they become a singular\,\navant-garde song\nforce. The East Coast house-show circuit first brought them into each\nother’s orbit. Both Victoria\nand Stone are long time participants in the D.I.Y. music world\, with\ntheir own separate histories\nin basement noise shows\, warehouses and all ages spaces (Victoria has\nseveral records under\nthe name Brittle Brian\, and Stone has most recently gone by the\npseudonym E.R. Visit). On their new\nalbum Autosmile\, the band’s first with the legendary indie label 4AD\, @\nhave harnessed their\nunique process to reimagine the psychedelic folk tradition as an\nundeniably contemporary art\nform. @ are a coalition\, a team\, a two-headed cat\, and their\ncollaboration has led them\, once\nagain\, to fascinating and timeless results. \nThe mysterious channels of the internet brought the songs of @’s first\nalbum\, Mind Palace Music\,\ninto the lives of a much larger audience than Victoria and Stone had\never encountered. The\nalbum’s organic success story is miraculous considering the aggressively\nun-searchable nature\nof their deliberately obtuse moniker. Before their debut album\, @ had\nnever played live or even\nsung a harmony together in person. The collaborations were entirely\ndistanced. In the years that\nfollowed\, @ figured out how to have a band practice\, how to perform this\nmusic for audiences of\nall sizes\, how to sing together in shared air\, and how to make each\nother laugh on stage with\nabsurdist guitar-god solos. The process of becoming a formidable live\nband was highly influential\non the way they decided to approach arranging Autosmile\, opting for more\nreproducible\nexperiments and relying far less on digital production flourishes than\nin the past. \nDuring the making of Autosmile\, Stone relocated to Philadelphia and the\nduo had the benefit of\nfinally living in the same city. However\, the band still chose to work\non their songs individually; as\nthe adage goes: If it ain’t broke… Instead of booking out studio time\,\nthey hired close friends to\nguest on the album\, adding cello\, violin\, and live drums to their\nalready expansive arsenal of\ninstruments. Victoria recorded her parts\, as always\, on a cheap 80’s\nmicrophone inherited from\ntheir step-mom’s old polka competition days. In lieu of a mic stand\, she\nregularly props it up in a\ncoffee mug\, recording from her couch. Stone’s preferred setup is also\nremarkably low tech\, yet\nthe resulting sounds of their home-wizardry somehow remain lush\,\ncomplex\, and occasionally\nquite hi-fi. \nBoth Victoria and Stone are incisive\, classic songwriters\, and their\noccasionally-baroque\narrangements and production touches give the songs a rough-hewn yet\nvirtuosic quality. This\ninventiveness\, applied to songs that hold up against classic psych folk\nrecords\, sets @ apart\,\nsomehow looking backwards and forwards all at once. Album opener “Bird”\nbegins with an eerie\,\nchromatic trance of acoustic guitar & cinematic flutes that spins out\ninto an uplifting pop chorus\nbefore crashing back into its introspective verse. There is a consistent\ndarkness to the moods of\nAutosmile\, but @ is also an inherently playful enterprise\, unexpected\nprog flourishes lurking\nbehind incisive indie rock song craft. Victoria explains\, “Neither of us\nis afraid of being over the\ntop musically…. being unafraid of getting dramatic or comedic lends\nitself to really emotional\nmoments.” \nOn the epic\, near 7-minute title track “Autosmile”\, Victoria poeticizes\na mysterious breakup into\nquestions of demonology\, no stone left unturned as the duo quests\ntowards respective and mutual\nresolution. Whatever private matters are examined\, mystery is\nkey—Victoria and Stone don’t tell\neach other what their songs are about. @ believes “if we are writing a\nsong that can apply to many\naspects of our own lives\, then it makes it more relatable to the\nlistener’s life.” In keeping\, the lyrics\nthroughout the album bounce between adversity and possibility\, exploring\nthe inner and outer\nworlds with curiosity and prismatic awe. The nostalgic earworm “I Know\nYou Are (But What Am I\nThinking)” seems to laugh at the beauty of change and decay. This\nability to twist a negative\nimpulse into something beautiful also gleams on the standout “Punish My\nMind”\, an expertly\narranged song complete with dense harmonies and intricate chord\nprogressions over which @\nsing about the twin instincts to punish and comfort oneself\, eventually\nenvisioning a pristine state\nof pure acceptance. \nAcross Autosmile\, Victoria and Stone carefully balance beauty and pain\nwhile remaining one of\nthe most musically adventurous duos operating today. These eleven songs\nnimbly shift between\nblack hole heaviness and patient understanding\, never abandoning a sense\nof wonder. In the\nface of darkness\, miraculously\, perhaps impishly\, an Autosmile forms.

The album \nwas written\, arranged\, produced\, and recorded by Sebastian Kinsler\, Lydia Slocum\, and Jake \nKelley across their respective homes in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania. \nA spirited investigation into the unnatural space created between human nature and a culture of \nconvenience\, a synthesis of dirt and digital\, bitknot by feeble little horse creates a language \nwherein one can re-imbue a sanctity of interdependence away from consumptive “self- \nsufficiency” and materialism. “The album art is based on the coincidental core memory matrix\, \nwhich was used in old computers to store memory / access information using 0s and 1s. Each \ncore\, or ‘bit\,’ is accessed through the grid of wires\, like a knot that stores secret details and \nmemories.” bitknot asks that we find new modes of being through this grid\, entrusting one \nanother with the collaborative construction of these knots. This negotiation with an ever- \ndeveloping hybrid reality is expertly exemplified in the album’s production – the buoyancy of \nKinsler’s arrangements provide a perfectly balanced surface tension for the weight of Slocum’s \nmeandering introspection as they playfully harmonize against saccharine hooks\, walls of noise\, \na supercharged car battery’s worth of synths and samples dropped in the ocean of their guitar- \ndriven songwriting framework\, and some of Kelley’s most laser-focused drums to date to create \na sonic chimera that is as likely to be found nascently developing in the early aughts as some \nunknown\, chromatic future. \nRhymes written with sidewalk chalk that refuse to be erased in the Anthropocene’s acid rain of \ndestructive relationships\, Herbert Marcuse’s One-Dimensional Man manifest through the spirit \nof a young woman born in the shadow of the Steel City’s industrial ghosts\, a study of the clumsy \nalchemy of IRL and WWW – it is within these rhizomatic contradictions that bitknot proliferates.

The making of the album has revealed something new of themselves\, opening them up as a more collaborative entity – as evidenced by closing track As I Breathe\, written just one week before they entered the studio. While much of the record’s lyrical content deals with the trials and complexities of navigating life\, the album ends on a tentatively hopeful note with the striking line “Even as we fall / I have learned the world is small / And I proceed.”
