SUMMARY:Matt Benson
DESCRIPTION:This June\, we are excited to welcome to Whelan’s the incredible Matt Benson. \nFrom a fire-bombed Belfast music shop\, to Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage touring the Balkans with Dutch Ska Bands and being down and out in London via every smoky dive bar you can shake a stick at\, Matt has lived the musical life most only dream of — now he’s telling the whole story through soul-drenched vocals\, steeped in cinematic narratives. So close your eyes and follow along. \nHis debut album Sit Back Down Again is capturing peoples imaginations and getting 5-star reviews from the critics. A soul-drenched debut steeped in vintage R&B\, New Orleans brass\, and cinematic storytelling. Grief\, growth\, supernatural characters and barroom romances — told through warm horns\, weathered vocals & raw\, honest songs. Hear echoes of Randy Newman\, Van Morrison\, Chris Stapleton and Dr. John shaped by a surfeit of New Orleans style. Its stories blur the line between rich\, cinematic fiction and the authenticity that comes with having lived through many of the narratives that he explores. \nCome see Matt sing this album at the piano\, hear him growl through the trombone to enchant and compel you through his world of stories in what promises to be an unforgettable evening. \nWith over 120k plays on streaming platforms\, appearances on UTV Life\, RTE Radio 1’s ‘Arena’\, selling out Whelans and praise from George Ezra\, Matt’s had an illustrious career playing trombone. He’s been in George Ezra’s band since 2017\, and played with Bad Manners\, The Pogues\, Neil Hannon\, Hot 8 Brass Band and lots more…

SUMMARY:Singular Artists presents Skullcrusher
DESCRIPTION:Skullcrusher is the folk-electronica musical project of New York-based musician Helen Ballentine. She released her latest album\, And Your Song Is Like A Circle last October\, and has previously supported artists such as Ethel Cain and The Japanese House. \nAnd Your Song Is Like a Circle\, the second album from New York-based artist Skullcrusher\, a.k.a. Helen Ballentine\, winds its way into an everchanging\, unstable core. \nIf Skullcrusher’s first album rendered the detailed intimacies of domestic space\, Circle finds itself vaporised across the landscape: swirling\, drifting\, searching. It skirts an event horizon in long\, slow strokes. These are songs that vibrate with the fervency of an attempt to capture a moment\, to draw a circle around it. \nSkullcrusher is now bringing this to a live audience\, stopping off in Dublin on Saturday\, 20 June 2026. This isn’t one you want to miss.

SUMMARY:Public Tour: Comedy
DESCRIPTION:Join Underthings – Improv\, an improv and sketch duo\, for a tour of the Gallery with a twist! \nUnderthings\, like all comedians\, are subconsciously determined to make themselves the focus of everything. But\, for this tour\, they will try their best to focus on the beautiful works of art\, and not on their own petty existences. Spoiler: they will fail! After all\, artists can be petty too. They will also attempt to deal with some art-history conundrums: Who’s the best prophet? Who has feuds? What’s that guy doing with his crutch? Does any artist suspect they’re a genius? \n\nMeet your tour guides in our Courtyard\, near the Merrion Square information desk.\nRead our Visitor Guide for details of what to expect on your visit to the Gallery.

SUMMARY:Heaney’s Mythology  | Seamus Heaney: Listen Now Again
DESCRIPTION:Drawing from the myths of ancient Greece and Rome\, and Ireland’s own heroic cycles\, Heaney found a rich tapestry of story and memory—a way to understand who we are and where we come from. Never settling for a simple retelling of these inherited tales instead\, Heaney breathed new life into them\, weaving the intimate world of Mossbawn with the vast\, resonant landscapes of legend. \nFrom the poet’s early encounters with local folklore to his later meditations on classical figures such as Antaeus and Hercules\, the tour invites you to follow Heaney’s journey as he transformed the myths he inherited into something wholly his own.

SUMMARY:James Joyce Centre Walking Tours
DESCRIPTION:Guides from the James Joyce Centre take you through Dublin\, exploring the history of the city and the various locations described by Ireland’s greatest writer\, James Joyce.\n\nThough Joyce lived most of his life outside of Ireland\, Dublin would provide the backdrop for virtually all of his work. On a stroll around the inner city\, our guide will explain the real-life inspiration behind some of Joyce’s most celebrated writing\, demonstrating just how central the streetscape of the ‘Hibernian metropolis’ was to the author’s life and art. The tour visits such stops as Belvedere College\, the Gresham Hotel\, the James Joyce Statue\, Davy Byrnes\, and the National Library.\n\nThis is an excellent and fun introduction to Joyce in a bustling part of the city.\n\nThe James Joyce Centre offers two tours: Introducing Joyce’s Dublin and Footsteps of Leopold Bloom.\n\nEvery Thursday\, Friday & Saturday at 11 am. Duration 2 hours.\n\nAdmission to the James Joyce Centre is included. \nThe James Joyce Centre is supported by the Department of Culture\, Communications and Sport.

SUMMARY:Conor Kinsella
DESCRIPTION:Conor Kinsella is a genre-bending punk artist and producer from Dublin. Created in 2025\, the project looks to the idea of genre itself as a tool for writing new music which pokes through the gaps which exist between styles. Exploring primarily political and self-deprecating themes which seek to unpack the chaotic and disturbing nature of life in the present age\, the live set combines punk beats\, semi-improvised ambient jams\, jazz-influenced arrangements and tightly sequenced dance rhythms\, at times equally confusing and familiar. Conor Kinsella has supported the likes of folk-punk legends Crywank at their sold-out headline show in Dublin in 2026. On June 19th\, he debuts the newest iteration of his live set\, complete with a six-piece band encompassing vocals\, saxophone\, trumpet\, viola\, keys\, guitar\, bass and drums.

SUMMARY:SHADY NASTY
DESCRIPTION:Shady Nasty subvert expectations. In a world bound by modded cars\, immigrant heritage and digital obsessions\, Kevin Stathis\, Haydn Green and Luca Watson craft a left-field breed of punk that pushes their formal training in jazz and classical music to its most uncustomary extremes. \nInfluences like King Krule\, Low Life and Show Me The Body surface not as reference points\, but as undercurrents — absorbed and reconfigured into something idiosyncratic and distinctly their own. \nEarly EPs Bad Posture and CLUBSMOKE earned praise from The Guardian\, NME\, Kerrang!\, The Line of Best Fit\, DIY\, Stereogum and VICE\, each showcasing immersive world-building that has shaped a consistent voice over the past seven years. \nMarked by a distinctive harbour-city twang\, TREK — their long-awaited debut album — grapples with the less-than-glamorous hard graft of staying afloat while remaining creatively uncompromised in Sydney. Produced by Kim Moyes of The Presets\, the record ventures into more textured\, exploratory territory than ever before. Four months in\, it’s resonated with longtime fans and newcomers alike\, earning acclaim from FBi Radio (Album of the Week)\, RTR FM (Feature Album)\, triple j Unearthed (Feature Artist)\, NME Magazine\, Ones to Watch and more. \nRecently\, the group has shared stages with Skeleten\, Shame\, High Vis\, Ho99o9\, Sleaford Mods\, Gustaf\, Amyl and The Sniffers\, among others. Through their own headline shows\, they’ve cultivated a cult following across Sydney’s underground — including a sold-out run of album shows earlier this April. No matter the venue\, no matter the bill\, devout adherents clamber to fuel a heaving mosh.

SUMMARY:Oral Histories of survivors of Ireland’s institutions in the North of England
DESCRIPTION:20th century Ireland was marked by institutionalisation and emigration. Many survivors experienced both fates. Since 2025\, Fréa Renewing Roots have been collecting oral histories of survivors who moved to the north of England. They give their testimonies both on the institutions and their subsequent lives. The project also works with children of survivors who talk about the impact of inter-generational trauma. ‘This event amplifies some of the first-hand accounts of new lives being set up in England by sharing some of the stories collected through the oral history project the first time these oral histories are being presented in Ireland\, so that more people are aware of this important but untold part of Irish history. \nSeminar Highlights\n\nTo enable people in Ireland to hear\, first hand\, the wide-ranging experiences of those survivors who emigrated.\nTo demonstrate the range of experiences that survivors lived beyond Ireland.\nTo present and amplify the voices of survivors – to enable them to tell their stories

SUMMARY:Mount Eerie
DESCRIPTION:bio: Phil Elverum\, b. 1978 \nI grew up five miles into the woods outside the island town of Anacortes\, Washington during the 80’s and 90’s in a post-hippie echo that normalized saying “hello” out loud to the nearby mountains\, waters and animals. As a teenager\, entering the world of music and creation through the door that punk tore open\, I finally found my people in Olympia. I lived there for 5 years and released records as the Microphones with the K label. Now I make Mount Eerie records\, since 2003\, and release them myself on a fake record label\, stubbornly still DIY to the bone. I have a devotion to this life of creativity and subversion that has never wavered. These songs and works dig down into the bedrock of this place and try to bring forth a fresh exhale\, a big picture glimpse\, small beneath the sky\, clear water trickling.

Songs of ReJoycing is a short musical celebration\, inspired by James Joyce’s Ulysses\, with script and lyrics by Brian Gallagher and music by Shaun Purcell. \nThe show features six original songs and a reprise\, with all of the pieces based on scenes from Ulysses. SUMMARY:The Plot In You
DESCRIPTION:The Plot In You continue to move forward on their fifth full-length album and second for Fearless Records\, Swan Song. The Ohio quartet— Landon Tewers [vocals]\, Josh Childress [guitar]\, Ethan Yoder [bass]\, and Michael Cooper [drums] stare down years of negativity\, soured friendships\, disappointment\, and mistakes and flush it all away in the wake of hammering distortion\, towering melodies\, cinematic production\, and unapologetically cathartic lyrics. Ascending to the apex of an eight-year grind\, the band reached critical mass on 2018’s ‘DISPOSE’. \nThe standout “FEEL NOTHING” exploded with 28 million US streams\, while the project eclipsed 55 million US streams. Billboard raved\, “DISPOSE is the band’s most polished and cohesive work to date\,” and Alternative Press noted\, “DISPOSE makes it clear that TPIY challenge both the listeners and themselves more and more with each release.” Grading the album “9.0-out-of-10\,” Rock Sound predicted it “should finally and deservedly make The Plot In You a name that everyone knows.” \nThey supported the record by hitting the road with Underoath\, The Amity Affliction\, Like Moths To Flames\, Sum 41\, and more. After racking up over 100 million streams and receiving praise from Billboard\, Rock Sound\, Alternative Press\, and more\, the group wave off darkness with unassuming confidence and clarity on Swan Song ignited by the single “Face Me.”

SUMMARY:Éire to Everywhere: Stories Without Borders with Nuala O’Connor
DESCRIPTION:On Blooms Day 2026\, we are so delighted to welcome Nuala O’Connor into EPIC to discuss one of the most famous short stories in the world – James Joyce’s The Dead. The award-winning author has recently written an introduction for a new hardback edition of the story\, and at our Éire to Everywhere event\, she will further dive into the intricacies of this incredible piece of work. \nCopies of this new edition of The Dead with Nuala O’Connor’s introduction will be available to purchase on the night\, with a book signing following the event. \nTicket holders should arrive about 10 minutes before 5:30pm at the Visitor Information desk within chq. There they will be escorted to the event’s location. \nAbout the Book\nThe longest short story in James Joyce’s 1914 collection Dubliners\, The Dead has had a cult following since its first appearance on shelves. It’s often considered one of the best short stories ever written in the English language\, and even over a century later\, it’s poignance holds true. \nDublin\, 6 January: the Feast of the Epiphany\, also known in Ireland as Women’s Christmas or Nollaig na mBan. Gretta and Gabriel Conroy attend the annual dinner party hosted by his aunts\, the Morkan Sisters. As the house on Usher’s Island fills with laughter\, music and dancing\, the secrets of the guests interweave. The festive evening culminates in a shocking confession by Gretta and a life-changing epiphany for Gabriel. \nAbout the Author\nNuala O’Connor is a Dublin-born author who now lives in Galway. She is a member of Aosdána\, the affiliation of creative artists in Ireland\, and holds a BA degree in the Irish language from Trinity\, a MA in Translation Studies from DCU\, and a Certificate in Women’s Studies from the University of Galway. She has a real interest in the Irish diaspora – her latest novel Seaborne follows the life of Anne Bonny\, the Irish pirate\, who features within the EPIC Museum. The novel was shortlisted for Novel of the Year at the 2024 Irish Book Awards\, and was nominated in the 2025 Dublin Literary Awards. She has published a range of fiction\, short fiction\, and poetry throughout her career\, and has shown special interest in Joyce and his wife Nora\, even writing a novel entitled Nora in 2021\, and curating a previous exhibition on Joyce at the Museum of Literature. \nEndorsements of NORA\n“An exceptional novel by one of the most brilliant contemporary Irish writers\, this is a story of love in all its many seasons\, from ardent sexuality to companionable tenderness\, through strength\, challenge and courage.  Nuala O’Connor has brought to vivid life a woman about whom every literature lover has surely wondered and has done so with immense skill and daring.” Joseph O’Connor\, author of Star of the Sea and Shadowplay \n“A lively and loving paean to the indomitable Nora Barnacle.” Edna O’Brien\, author of The Country Girls \nEndorsements of Seaborne\n“What an immense pleasure it was to read and what a gorgeous and perfect ending. I love how Nuala has given a full fictive life to this incredible woman\, and the women she loved\, showing us how ‘they cut their own paths. Knew their hearts.’ This book\, like Anne’s life\, is a fabulous voyage\, a wonderful\, buoyant tale\, sublimely imagined and beautifully told.” Donal Ryan\, author of Heart\, Be At Peace \n“SEABORNE is a rollicking triumph of passion\, and a powerful portrayal of Irish pirate\, Anne Bonny––a true original. Faultless in tone\, this novel is a wonderfully rendered reimagining of a great historical figure\, and confirms (what I already knew) that O’Connor is one of Ireland’s leading historical novelists. Filled with desire\, ambition\, bravery and soul\, this novel is a wonderful achievement.” Elaine Feeney\, author of Let Me Go Mad In My Own Way
