SUMMARY:Ancient Manuscripts and the Psychology of Reading
DESCRIPTION:Dr Christoph Scheepers\, Senior Lecturer in Psychology\, University of Glasgow \nResearch in the psychology of reading has traditionally centred on the cognitive processes involved in text comprehension. This includes exploring questions such as: “How do readers recognize words?”\, “How do they integrate information at the word\, sentence\, and discourse levels to construct a coherent interpretation of the text?”\, or “How do they resolve ambiguities at these various levels?”. \nAncient manuscripts introduce an additional aesthetic dimension to these inquiries—an area that so far has received relatively little attention in the psychology of reading. These manuscripts are particularly rich in paratextual features\, such as marginalia\, cross-referencing systems\, and artworks\, which supplement the main text. These elements have the potential to convey knowledge and understanding that extend beyond the content of the primary text itself. \nExamining how this process occurs requires a comprehensive approach that combines methodologies from the psychology of reading—particularly eye-tracking (to identify where readers focus their attention)—with survey and qualitative data. This integrated approach aims to assess not only the reading process\, but also the aesthetic and emotional responses to manuscript elements and how they affect interpretation in different readers. \nIn this lecture\, I will discuss key findings from applying this method to ancient manuscripts as part of the Paratexts Seeking Understanding project\, with a particular emphasis on the role of aesthetics\, in shaping readers’ interpretations of texts. \nFREE Talk:  No booking required for onsite talk\, please register for online viewing via Zoom HERE. \nAbout the Speaker:\nDr Christoph Scheepers is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Glasgow and is the Scientific Director of the Templeton project Paratext Seeking Understanding. He obtained his Master’s degree at the University of Bochum (1991) and his PhD at the University of Freiburg (1997). He held an Assistant Professorship in Computational Linguistics at Saarbruecken University (2000–2003) and Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Dundee (2003-2005)\, before moving to Glasgow. Dr Scheepers’s scientific background is in general cognitive science\, with a particular focus on psycholinguistics. He is an expert in eye-tracking research and statistical methods. He has held various research grants funded by ESRC\, and his Google Scholar citation index confirms over 18\,000 citations of his work so far.

DESCRIPTION:Bloomsday celebrates Thursday 16 June 1904\, the day depicted in James Joyce’s novel Ulysses. The day is named after Leopold Bloom\, the central character in Ulysses. The novel follows the life and thoughts of Leopold Bloom and a host of other characters – real and fictional – from 8am on 16 June 1904 through to the early hours of the following morning. \nCelebrations often include dressing up like characters from the book and in clothes that would have been the style of the era. One of the hallmark fancy dress items of Bloomsday is the straw boater hat. Celebrations come in many different forms like readings\, performances and visiting the places and establishments referenced in the book.

DESCRIPTION:Two years on from the release of their most recent album Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees\, American alternative rock outfit Dogstar have announced a show in Dublin’s 3Olympia Theatre on Thursday 11th June 2026. \n\n\nComprised of guitarist/vocalist Bret Domrose\, drummer Robert Mailhouse and bassist Keanu Reeves\, Dogstar was born in 1991 as a band of friends who came together in a garage in Southern California and simply dreamed of playing music together and making a little noise. Now\, all these years later\, Domrose\, Mailhouse and Reeves took some time at the tail end of an historic lockdown to create this collection of songs that fully encompasses who they are as artists today. The happily reunited rock trio’s official return came in May 2023 – more than 20 years since their last performance together – with their first public performance at the BottleRock Napa Valley music festival with a set that sparked fan and critical praise alike\, including the live debut of their lead single ‘Everything Turns Around\,’ which was officially in July of that year. \nDogstar epitomize the quintessential Southern California storytelling rock band they’ve always been in their hearts\, making deeply resonant music that literally comes from Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees – the name of their most recent album which was released in October\, 2023 via their own label Dillon Street Records (distributed through ADA).

His next book\, another collection of 100 essays (but not about Joyce)\, will appear in June 2027. \nDavid Bremner is a composer and musician from West Cumbria who moved to Ireland in 1999 and who now lectures in composition at the Dublin Conservatoire. With soprano Elizabeth Hilliard he runs the music/text production company Béal. He was Assistant Organist at Christ Church Cathedral Dublin until 2019\, and has played with ensembles such as the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra\, Crash Ensemble\, and Opera Theatre Company. \nGerry Fialka is an American experimental filmmaker\, curator\, lecturer\, interviewer and writer. He leads workshops on experimental film\, avant-garde music and art\, subversive social media\, books by James Joyce and Marshall McLuhan’s media theory. He was Frank Zappa’s archivist and production assistant for ten years\, and worked for the legendary comedian George Carlin. LA Weekly has described Fialka as a ‘cultural revolutionary.’ He lives in Venice\, California where he runs a Finnegans Wake reading group. \nRónán Hession is a writer\, musician and civil servant from Dublin. He has published three acclaimed novels: Leonard and Hungry Paul (2019)\, Panenka (2021) and Ghost Mountain (2024). The first of these was adapted as a six-part BBC television series in 2026. His next novel is Richard Heart Julianne (2027). \nSusanne Savage is a Belfast-born singer\, songwriter\, violinist\, and dynamic live performer whose musical journey spans continents and genres. Suzanne toured internationally as Principal Soprano Soloist with Riverdance and has since performed or recorded with major artists such as Paul Brady\, Eleanor McEvoy\, Roseanne Cash\, Van Morrison\, Jimmy Cobb\, Ernie Watts Quartet\, and emerging talents like David Lyttle and Matteo Addabbo. Most of us tend to write with one hand\, strengthening neural pathways in the left hemisphere. \nThis event playfully encourages you to respond to James Joyce’s dreamlike book Finnegans Wake with your non-dominant hand\, awakening the right hemisphere. Joyce was said to have departed from traditional English when he wrote Finnegans Wake\, which is what makes this event especially comfortable for those with dyslexia or dyspraxia\, as there are no rules about how to read or write. \nLed by visual artist Vicki Davis\, the event is 90 minutes long\, but feel free to come and go from the room as you please. \n\nVicki Davis is a visual artist based in Cork. She graduated from the Technological University Dublin on Sherkin Island in West Cork 2020. Her practice is multidisciplinary spanning performance art\, film\, experimental sound and sculptural installation. DESCRIPTION:Join us at The James Joyce Centre on Friday\, 12 June 2026 at 7pm as soprano Lorna Windsor and pianist Nicole Panizza present the European premiere of Chamber Music\, with the poems of James Joyce and songs of Ross Lee Finney. \nThis collection of beautiful poems written by James Joyce between 1901 and 1904\, published in 1907\, has long remained in the shadow of Joyce’s close-following famous works: Stephen Hero\, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man\, Dubliners\, Ulysses and Finnegan’s Wake. If Stephen Hero and Portrait of the Artist revealed much of Joyce’s personality\, it can be said that there are clues\, even strong hints\, to those very personality traits and roots\, also planted in the poems of Chamber Music. These are the poems of an exceptional young man\, already marked by the weighty\, vast culture he gained as a student and by his pithy and perspicacious views on life. Joyce\, also a talented singer and passionate music lover\, imbued his all his works with music\, including the 36 poems of Chamber Music\, which he deeply desired to be sung. \nIn 1927\, Joyce was living in Paris\, where the young American composer\, Ross Lee Finney (1906-1997) was introduced to him. Finney\, like Joyce\, was also a singer\, guitarist and pianist. Finney later became a leading American\, Pulitzer-awarded composer of the mid-twentieth century. He was the only classical music composer to set the whole collection of Chamber Music poems\, but performing the complete cycle\, due to the revised laws of the Joyce Legacy\, was too prohibitive in cost. \nThe interesting symbiosis which is found between Joyce’s poems and Finney’s music resembles those of Schubert – Müller (Winterreise) or Schumann-Heine (Dichterliebe). With great sensitivity Finney mirrors Joyce’s particular and varying poetic styles\, from madrigalist\, to folk or balladlike idioms\, to polyphonic\, to lyrical\, to symbolism. The abundant literary influences in the poems are akin to the clear compositional references in the music\, and thus give a universal dimension to the song cycle. Moreover\, in Joyce and Finney we are looking at moods and perceptions\, rather than raw or direct emotion\, as each song unwinds its story or stance\, through a learning labyrinth\, experience\, a journey. \nLORNA WINDSOR\, soprano\, opera and acclaimed vocal chamber music specialist. Her wide stage experience in major European theatres and festivals\, as singer\, actress\, or voce recitante\, is an asset to her performing in the more intimate\, sometimes miniaturist world of song or vocal chamber music\, either with piano\, instrumental groups or with orchestra. \nDR NICOLE PANIZZA is an internationally acclaimed collaborative pianist\, scholar\, educator\, and arts consultant. DESCRIPTION:Hailing from the depths of rural Ireland\, alternative Donegal singer songwriter George Houston was raised on classic folk\, pop and rock from his parents vast collection of cds and vinyl\, always encouraged to listen and play freely with instruments\, George developed a natural timeless sound\, a voice beyond his years and a songwriting style sprinkled with an inspired nostalgia. \nstarting his music career in September 2020 with his bold debut single Boo Fucking Hoo\, the track had instant local success pushing George to record his debut album Cold Toast at the young age of 19 followed by his second and third studio albums Undesired and Vehicular Suicide the following years. For the prolific songwriter\, his albums have been cementing his distinctive sound with brooding vocals\, airy harmonies and candid lyrics along with his enchanting live shows. \nGeorge has grown a large international audience from the viral reaction to his single In Aeternum Vive which was placed in The Glastonbury song contest longlist\, as well as gaining the attention of acclaimed artist Declan McKenna who gave George his first play on BBC Radio One. \nThe Donegal artist has also seen support from RTÉ Radio One\, Today FM\, iRadio and Hot press Magazine. \nGeorge started playing local shows in Donegal when Covid lockdowns opened up\, and since\, the world has fallen in love with the charm and intimate feel of the storytelling artist’s live shows. \nIn September 2024 George was honoured to support music legend Paul Weller across North America on his sold out tour that stopped at historic venues made famous by many of George’s musical idols. \nA once in a lifetime opportunity to drive across the continent with his father\, George was also invited to record his fourth album at Weller’s famous Black Barn studio after the success of supporting his two sold out shows in Ireland. \nThe eclectic pop artist has also had the opportunity to play at Body & Soul\, Whelan’s ones to watch\, Earagail Arts Festival and Stendhal Festival\, he’s also had the pleasure of supporting sold out shows for Joshua Burnside\, Duke Special\, and the amazing Hothouse Flowers.

The tour visits such stops as Belvedere College\, the Gresham Hotel\, the James Joyce Statue\, Davy Byrnes\, and the National Library.\n\nThis is an excellent and fun introduction to Joyce in a bustling part of the city.\n\nThe James Joyce Centre offers two tours: Introducing Joyce’s Dublin and Footsteps of Leopold Bloom.\n\nEvery Thursday\, Friday & Saturday at 11 am. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City\, the company is known for adapting significant literary works for the stage\, reimagining them through a fusion of dance\, music\, and theatre. Danse Lumière’s work often engages with some of the most pressing social issues of our time. Founder and Artistic Director Kathryn Roszak is widely recognised for her stage adaptations of works by writers including Isabel Allende\, Maxine Hong Kingston\, Emily Dickinson\, Tomas Tranströmer\, and Rainer Maria Rilke. \nArtistic Director \nKathryn Roszak is the Artistic Director of Danse Lumière\, an acclaimed choreographer and advocate for women in the arts.
