DESCRIPTION:“Don’t Call It a Comeback” isn’t just the name of a song off Motion City Soundtrack’s 2003 debut I Am The Movie\, it’s also an apt way to summarise the band’s mission statement. During Motion City Soundtrack’s initial run from 1997 – 2016\, the Minneapolis-based group released six celebrated albums\, toured the world countless times and achieved gold status for their hit single “Everything Is Alright.” \nAfter taking a three year hiatus\, the band (vocalist/guitarist Justin Pierre\, guitarist Joshua Cain\, bassist Matt Taylor\, keyboardist Jesse Johnson and drummer Tony Thaxton) started performing live again in 2019\, but even the most optimistic fans didn’t necessarily expect a follow-up to 2015’s Panic Stations. \n“When we started conceptualising the idea for this record\, I was thinking about what we loved about doing this originally\,” Cain explains. \nThe result is The Same Old Wasted Wonderful World\, their latest album that sees the band transmuting the last decade of life experiences into the most catchy songs of their career.

DESCRIPTION:“Bossa nova pioneer” Resident Advisor “Rio beach boogie legend” The Vinyl Factory \n“One of the most important and popular performers in the history of Brazilian pop” All Music \nFrom samba & bossa to psychedelic MPB & beach boogie\, Marcos Valle is one the most important composers\, arrangers\, writers and performers in Brazil’s history. There are not many artists in any era in recorded music history that can boast a career as stylistically varied as Marcos’ – let alone the fact he has maintained quality consistent throughout a storied six decade career. The renaissance man of Brazilian pop has worked with Leon Ware\, Sarah Vaughan\, and Chicago; seen his music sampled by Jay Z\, Kanye West\, Childish Gambino\, Madlib\, and Kaytranada; had his songs recorded by the likes of Frank Sinatra\, Bebel Gilberto – even Emma Bunton of The Spice Girls once took on his classic ‘Os Grilos (The Crickets Sing For Anamaria)’. \nOne of the second-wave of early bossa nova composers\, following in the footsteps of João Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim\, Valle rose to prominence in the early 60s following the release of his now world famous bossa nova standard ‘Samba de Verao (Summer Samba)’. Written with his brother and long-standing songwriting partner Paulo-Sergio as a tribute to the joys of life as a Rio surfer\, it’s up there with ‘The Girl From Ipanema’ as one of the most universally recognisable Brazilian songs. \nSeeking reinvention in the 1970s after the bossa nova sensation had died down\, Marcos developed a more refined\, jazzier\, and more psychedelic MPB sound which characterized a string of his finest and most sought after albums: Marcos Valle (1970)\, Garra (1971)\, Vento Sul (1972)\, and Previsao Do Tempo (1974). In the midst of these masterpieces he was writing and recording music for film and television (including Brazilian Sesame Street!): it was through this line of work he met the trio who would go on to be known as Azymuth\, naming themselves after one of Valle’s songs from the soundtrack to O Fabuloso Fittipaldi (1973) \nAs the 70s drew to a close Marcos started a hugely successful partnership with the renowned US producer and singer-songwriter Leon Ware\, together they wrote a string of US soul cult classics like ‘Rocking You Eternally’ and ‘Baby Don’t Stop Me’. Marcos would go on to record his own Brazilianised versions on Vontade De Rever Você (1981). Ware would then join forces once again with Marcos a couple of years later for what is one of his most enduring hits (partly thanks to today’s Youtube & Spotify algorithms!)\, the workout-boogie monster ‘Estrelar’. \nMoving into the 90s\, Valle became somewhat disenfranchised with the Brazilian music market and stepped away to focus again on composing for film & TV. But over in the UK and Europe a newfound cult status was brewing thanks to flourishing music subcultures like acid-jazz\, jazz-dance\, and rare groove\, along with crate- digger culture that unified these inter-connected scenes. After meeting Far Out Recordings’ Joe Davis at London’s Jazz Cafe while on tour in 1995\, the pair hit it off and started what became a near 25 year (and counting) partnership\, beginning with the release of Nova Bossa Nova in 1998. Celebrating his 80th Birthday year\, Marcos Valle returns to Europe in 2023 coincide with a celebratory 20th anniversary reissue of his long out-of -print 2003 modern classic Contrasts\, home to the aptly titled ‘Parabens’\, which translating directly as “Congratulations” is what Brazilins say to wish someone a happy birthday.

Commissioned as part of the National Archives’ year-long commemorative programme to mark the release of the 1926 Census records\, this intimate and immersive experience will be staged within the historic National Archives building on Bishop Street from 27th May 2026 to 14th June 2026 – the first time a theatrical production has ever been mounted in the historical building. \nWritten and directed by Louise Lowe\, with design and scenography by Owen Boss\, The Good Luck Club is a commission by the National Archives and is created specifically for the landmark institution. The production invites audiences to step inside the living fabric of Ireland’s past\, moving through the building in small groups\, exploring rarely accessed spaces and encountering a series of vivid\, human stories drawn from archival records. Blending performance\, participation and historical testimony\, the production illuminates the social landscape of Ireland in 1926 – a nation finding its footing in the early years of independence. \nThe production features an ensemble cast including Ghaliah Conroy\, John Cronin\, Libby Conway Dunne\, Maeve Fitzgerald\, Oliver Flitcroft\, Jack Hassett\, Pattie Maguire\, Ciara Molloy and Jamie O’Neill. \nTaking direct inspiration from the Irish Hospitals’ Sweepstake – the hugely popular lottery initiative that captured the public’s imagination in the early 20th century – The Good Luck Club examines themes of chance\, aspiration and survival\, stepping inside the gilded machinery of the infamous Sweepstakes\, where the desperate hope meets the calculations of the new post war Ireland. Through personal stories unearthed from the census and historical records\, the production will meaningfully excavate early 20th Century Ireland and how a country was built on a ticket and a prayer.

DESCRIPTION:SO Fine Art Editions are pleased to present Cut Flowers by Oisín Byrne\, an Irish artist\, writer and filmmaker based in London. This new series of screenprints continues his exploration of scale\, bold colour\, floral form\, gesture and the passing of time\, and will also open at Connolly\, London\, on 1 May 2026. \nMoving fluidly between painting\, film\, performance\, sound and text\, Byrne describes his studio practice as a dialogue between focused\, reflective work and instinctive mark-making\, often exploring the shifting boundaries between conscious thought and intuitive gesture. His studio itself reflects this split: upstairs is used for filming\, editing\, teaching and reading\, while downstairs is for painting and drawing – Byrne describes his process as a movement between states of mind. After sustained periods of research or concentration\, he returns to drawing with urgency\, driven to capture the immediacy of subjects before they shift or disappear.

DESCRIPTION:For the first Dublin by Dusk event IMMA is excited to present the screening of the multi award winning documentary North Circular: A Musical Trip Through Inner-City Dublin directed by Luke McManus. The screening will be preceded by a live overture performed by acclaimed cellist Kevin Murphy (Slow Moving Clouds\, Rattling Ark) featuring themes from his soundtrack for the film. North Circular will be screened on Living Canvas at IMMA\, Europe’s largest digital outdoor art screen presented at IMMA by IPUT Real Estate. \nNorth Circular is a documentary musical shot in black‑and‑white that explores the history\, music\, and streetscapes of this iconic route\, touching on themes from colonialism and mental health to women’s liberation. \nAlongside the screening the exhibition Fisherwoman\, Fisherwoman will open late until 8pm. This exhibition brings together two distinct art practices – of painter Camille Souter (1929–2023) and contemporary artist Alberta Whittle (b. 1980). Spanning a period of 70 years across two generations\, the works in this thematic exhibition range from painting\, collage and watercolours\, to immersive film\, sculptural installation and live performance. \nIMMA’s Fruition café van will be open in the courtyard for refreshments and treats!

DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome Dr. Yvonne Scott to lead an exclusive walk-through of the exhibition from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. \nFollowing the talk\, visitors are very welcome to stay and explore the exhibition\, as the gallery will remain open until 9:00 pm.\nDr. Yvonne Scott is an Emeritus Fellow and former Associate Professor of History of Art at Trinity College Dublin. She was awarded the RHA Gold Medal for 2025 in recognition of her services to Irish art. She has researched and published extensively in modern and contemporary art\, including analysis of various aspects of the work of artist Kathy Prendergast. Her most recent book is Landscape and Environment in Contemporary Irish Art\, published by Churchill House Press in association with the Irish Museum of Modern Art\, 2023.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Curator’s Tour of our current exhibitions EX/IT: LIFT by artist Abbas Zahedi and The Artist’s Eye: Bushra Mustafa Dunne\, as part of Dublin by Dusk. \nFor his exhibition\, Zahedi presents a newly commissioned body of work that interrogates bureaucratic systems – administrative\, religious\, institutional\, and militaristic. Through a series of sound sculptures\, some of which sound alarms\, whilst others reflect endless rhythms of manual labour or ritual practice; Zahedi explores the capacity of the gallery space to challenge dominant systems through dialogue and collective action. \nThe Artist’s Eye series asks those exhibiting in Gallery 1 to invite an artist of influence to present work in Gallery 2. In this instalment Abbas Zahedi has invited poet Bushra Mustafa Dunne to write and record a new poem. Evoking the Irish mourning tradition of keening\, Dunne’s new poem weaves together personal narratives and reflections on militarism\, memory\, and grief\, to imagine shared histories of sonic rituals and communal grieving.
