The tour visits such stops as Belvedere College\, the Gresham Hotel\, the James Joyce Statue\, Davy Byrnes\, and the National Library.\n\nThis is an excellent and fun introduction to Joyce in a bustling part of the city.\n\nThe James Joyce Centre offers two tours: Introducing Joyce’s Dublin and Footsteps of Leopold Bloom.\n\nEvery Thursday\, Friday & Saturday at 11 am. SUMMARY:From Dublin to Nairobi: A Lecture by Sahara Abdi
DESCRIPTION:James Joyce’s Ulysses is often celebrated as a European modernist masterpiece. Reading it from a postcolonial perspective reveals resonances with the experience of colonial and postcolonial Kenya. Dublin\, under British rule was not only politically constrained but culturally subdued. Joyce dramatizes these pressures through the lives of Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom. These texts speak to similar forms of marginalization and linguistic domination experienced in Africa. \nNgũgĩ wa Thiong’o\, one of Kenya’s most important writers offers a lens for reading these resonances. His central argument in Decolonising the Mind is that colonial language is a tool of domination. “The domination of a people’s language by the language of the colonising nations was crucial to the domination of the mental universe of the colonised.” \nSeparated by time\, both Joyce and Ngugi are reconstructing cultural memory under colonial pressure and they represent two colonial experiences responding differently to same imperial language. \nThis lecture juxtaposes Joyce and Ngugi to explore how both writers represent colonial subjectivity\, the politics of language\, and the dignity of ordinary life\, despite their different historical and geographical contexts. \nSahara Abdi is writer\, a literacy advocate and the founder of Northern Voice Trust\, a literacy organization dedicated to fostering reading\, writing\, and creative expression in Northern Kenya. Through her writing\, she amplifies the stories and identities of children from Northern Kenya. Her work blends storytelling and advocacy to promote literacy and representation for young readers across marginalized communities. She champions storytelling as a powerful tool for identity\, belonging and social change. \nThe lecture is supported by the Embassy of Ireland\, Kenya.

DESCRIPTION:The James Joyce Centre in association with Poetry Ireland presents a wonderful evening of poetry and song James Joyce and The Great Irish Poets Songbook\, with tenor Dean Power and composer and pianist James Hurley on Sunday\, 14 June at 7pm. They will perform settings of texts by some of Ireland’s best-known writers and poets\, composed and arranged by pianist James Hurley\, who will accompany Dean on piano. \nHighlights of the programme will include a selection of chamber music originally written by James Joyce\, as well as settings of “Easter 1916\,” “The Lake Isle of Inisfree” and “The Salley Gardens” by WB Yeats. You will hear also some intriguing settings of poems by Oscar Wilde and by Fanny Parnell\, sister of Charles Stewart Parnell along with poets Susan L. Mitchell and Katharine Tynan. The programme will contain updated versions of previously composed songs as well as 2 world premieres. \nIrish tenor Dean Power is a former member of the ensemble at the Bayerische Staatsoper. Dean’s recent operatic engagements have included singing Jaquino in a unique semi-staged performance of Fidelio under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel with The Dudamel Foundation. He also debuted at the Salzburger Festspiele\, for Irish National Opera. On the concert platform\, Dean has performed at the Royal Albert Hall with the L.S.O\, at Teatro Nacional de Sao Carlos in Lisbon\, the National Symphony Orchestra\, the Prague Symphony orchestra and the National Concert Orchestra. \nJames Hurley is a classical pianist with a passion for improvisation. He studied piano performance at the Memorial University of Newfoundland (2008) and music at the New England Conservatory\, Boston (2010). In 2011\, James moved to Germany\, where he and his wife opened Più Piano – a live performance venue and piano school\, located in Neuburg an der Donau. In 2017 he released a solo piano CD entitled Nightscapes\, and has since curated hours of live improvisations which continue to be released on streaming platforms. \nTickets are €20.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at The James Joyce Centre for a special Bloomsday Festival lecture on Monday\, 15 June at 6pm by Dr. Brendan Twomey about how the city of Dublin shaped (and were shaped by) two of its most iconic writers: Jonathan Swift and James Joyce. \nThis illustrated talk will use the Brookings map of Dublin of 1728 and Swift’s comments on Dublin city as a starting point. Swift and Joyce may have been separated by two centuries but to say that they were opinionated about their native city is an understatement. Both writers have instant global visual and literary recognition that is forever associated with Dublin and both are still relevant “after all these years.” Both sought\, albeit using very different registers and coming from very different social\, economic and cultural perspectives\, to capture the essence of the spirit of their home city as reflected in its people\, its politics\, as well as its physical manifestation in its streetscapes and its buildings. \nMost of all\, both hold a special place in the hearts of modern day Dubliners\, who celebrate their lives and works annually with the Bloomsday Festival and Jonathan Swift Festival. We ‘reJoyced’ in 2022 with the centenary celebrations of Ulysses. This year\, it is Swift’s turn as we mark the 300th anniversary of the publication of Gulliver’s Travels. \nJoin us as Dr. Twomey explores the “Dublins” of Swift and Joyce’s times\, weighing the merits of the old addage “the more things change\, the more they stay the same” and the literary masterpieces they have produced. \nDr. Brendan Twomey is an academic and retired banker. In 2018\, he completed his PhD in History at Trinity College Dublin. He has published extensively on the financial history of eighteenth-century Ireland. DESCRIPTION:One of the genre-defining bands of the late 90s\, Static-X was founded in Los Angeles CA in 1994 by lead vocalist/guitarist Wayne Static and drummer Ken Jay. They have toured the world extensively\, and to this day\, maintain a reputation for being one of the best live acts in heavy music. \nIn 2012\, the band took a break to pursue outside creative interests and on 1 November 2014 Wayne Static unexpectedly passed away. DESCRIPTION:On Blooms Day 2026\, we are so delighted to welcome Nuala O’Connor into EPIC to discuss one of the most famous short stories in the world – James Joyce’s The Dead. The award-winning author has recently written an introduction for a new hardback edition of the story\, and at our Éire to Everywhere event\, she will further dive into the intricacies of this incredible piece of work. \nCopies of this new edition of The Dead with Nuala O’Connor’s introduction will be available to purchase on the night\, with a book signing following the event. \nTicket holders should arrive about 10 minutes before 5:30pm at the Visitor Information desk within chq. There they will be escorted to the event’s location. \nAbout the Book\nThe longest short story in James Joyce’s 1914 collection Dubliners\, The Dead has had a cult following since its first appearance on shelves. It’s often considered one of the best short stories ever written in the English language\, and even over a century later\, it’s poignance holds true. \nDublin\, 6 January: the Feast of the Epiphany\, also known in Ireland as Women’s Christmas or Nollaig na mBan. Gretta and Gabriel Conroy attend the annual dinner party hosted by his aunts\, the Morkan Sisters. As the house on Usher’s Island fills with laughter\, music and dancing\, the secrets of the guests interweave. The festive evening culminates in a shocking confession by Gretta and a life-changing epiphany for Gabriel. \nAbout the Author\nNuala O’Connor is a Dublin-born author who now lives in Galway. She is a member of Aosdána\, the affiliation of creative artists in Ireland\, and holds a BA degree in the Irish language from Trinity\, a MA in Translation Studies from DCU\, and a Certificate in Women’s Studies from the University of Galway. She has a real interest in the Irish diaspora – her latest novel Seaborne follows the life of Anne Bonny\, the Irish pirate\, who features within the EPIC Museum. The novel was shortlisted for Novel of the Year at the 2024 Irish Book Awards\, and was nominated in the 2025 Dublin Literary Awards. DESCRIPTION:The Plot In You continue to move forward on their fifth full-length album and second for Fearless Records\, Swan Song. The Ohio quartet— Landon Tewers [vocals]\, Josh Childress [guitar]\, Ethan Yoder [bass]\, and Michael Cooper [drums] stare down years of negativity\, soured friendships\, disappointment\, and mistakes and flush it all away in the wake of hammering distortion\, towering melodies\, cinematic production\, and unapologetically cathartic lyrics. SUMMARY:Songs of ReJoycing
DESCRIPTION:The James Joyce Centre presents Songs of ReJoycing on Bloomsday\, Tuesday\, 16th June at 7.30pm. Songs of ReJoycing is a short musical celebration\, inspired by James Joyce’s Ulysses\, with script and lyrics by Brian Gallagher and music by Shaun Purcell. \nThe show features six original songs and a reprise\, with all of the pieces based on scenes from Ulysses. The songs are introduced and put in context\, describing the characters involved\, the emotional background and the setting. By linking the text between each song\, Songs of ReJoycing is an accessible\, musical way into the novel and stars renowned musical theatre performers Mark O’Regan\, Barbara Galvin\, and Brian Gilligan\, with musical direction by David O’Connor. \nCome celebrate with conclusion of the Bloomsday Festival with songs\, readings and great company! \nBrian Gallagher was born in Dublin. He is a full-time writer whose plays and short stories have been produced in Ireland\, Britain and Canada. He has worked extensively in radio and television\, writing many dramas and documentaries. He collaborated with composer Shaun Purcell on the musicals Larkin and Songs of ReJoycing\, for which he wrote the book and lyrics\, and he produced Whiskey in the Jar\, a musical for which he also wrote the book and lyrics\, with music by David O’Connor. His most recent musical project is A Terrible Beauty in which he again collaborated with composer Shaun Purcell\, with musical direction by David O’Connor. \nShaun Purcell has a long involvement in writing musicals\, which were staged to critical acclaim in venues in Dublin and London. He composed the music for Brian Gallagher’s Larkin\, Songs of ReJoycing\, and Humphrey Truman’s The Man Who Knows. He also worked with Brian Gallagher on Winds of Change\, which was broadcast on RTE Lyric FM. Having taken a break for a number of years to pursue a career in the public service\, Shaune returned ten years ago to the theatre with his Mad Raven’s theatre company\, who continue to perform his original productions at The Hawk’s Well theatre in Sligo. Shaun’s new show\, The Lost Letter\, was staged at the Hawkswell Theatre in February 2026. \nTickets are €15. \nThe Bloomsday Festival is organised by The James Joyce Centre in partnership with Fáilte Ireland and the Department of Culture\, Communications and Sport.
