SUMMARY:SPAFFORD CAMPBELL
DESCRIPTION:Spafford Campbell are twenty-something mould-breakers\, fiddle player Owen Spafford and guitarist Louis Campbell. The two first met as teenagers playing traditional music. The connection\, they say\, was immediate. The duo Spafford Campbell began playing live in 2018\, prompting double takes with their delicacy\, dynamism and seemingly telepathic exchanges\, with the startling intimacy of musical conversations nurtured in improv-led writing sessions. \nTheir latest album Tomorrow Held is a visionary body of eight largely instrumental tracks that hold space\, resolve into mystery\, that fold in elements of jazz\, post-rock and chamber classical music while raiding the folk music toolbox. Call it what you want: post-folk. Trad-noir. Folk nihilism. Then know that Spafford Campbell are blazing a trail that erases genre—and finds gold in the embers. While redolent of Talk Talk’s moody\, experimental 1988 opus Spirit of Eden\, and riven with a Bon Iver-ish sense of transcendence\, Tomorrow Held is a work of bold singularity. A whole greater than the sum of its parts—parts that include effects pedals\, ambient cassette loops\, flashes of electric guitar\, electronic processing on fiddle and impressionistic accompaniment. \n“Mingling traditional tunes with influences from minimalism\, post-rock and jazz\, they shift moods exquisitely.” The Guardian – 10 best folk albums of 2025 \n“This is a fusing of the traditional and the futuristic that is quietly groundbreaking\, and beguiling with it.” ★★★★ The Times — albums of the year so far 2025 \n“An intense\, almost subliminal drama you want to turn up to 11.” ★★★★★ The Arts Desk — Album of the Year 2025 \n“England’s finest and most innovative instrumental duo.” ★★★★★ Songlines — Top of the World \n“Their ever-shifting time-lapse textures evoke a strangely unsettling beauty.” MOJO \nNPR Music — Best albums of the Week \nFolk Album of the Year Award 2025 Nominee

SUMMARY:James Joyce Centre Walking Tours

SUMMARY:Soft God
DESCRIPTION:An empty stage. A painted cloth. Chaos. Dream. Abyss. \nEmma Martin returns to DDF with Soft God\, a new work commissioned by DDF and the Abbey Theatre which makes its world premiere as part of the 2026 Edition. \nSoft God is a jagged ceremony that swerves between the mythic and the ridiculous\, the carnivalesque and the everyday\, between virtuosity and failure. Moving through a series of ever-changing scenes – a rambling house\, a dance hall\, a creation myth\, a dream sequence and a never-ending folk dance – 8 performers cry\, kiss\, sing\, sway\, listen\, stamp\, hold hands and dance\, insisting on ways to keep hope\, meaning and spirit alive. \nAgainst a backdrop of crumbling certainties\, Soft God mines the collective imagination of this brutal moment\, where to dream together and share one’s self is an act of defiance. \nMongrel. Messy. Superstitious. Uncouth.

SUMMARY:Formal and Wild Landscapes by Fergus Martin
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Dr. Margarita Cappock \nAbout the exhibition\n‘Formal and Wild  Landscapes’ by Fergus Martin can be described as an exhibition of illusions and dreams.  It incorporates sculpture\, animation\, photographic prints and sound projections that connect at an emotional and subliminal level. \nEvery aspect of the exhibition\, from its commencement in the cube space to the culmination in the upper gallery\, provides the viewer with an invisible kinetic experience as the art works ‘ping’ against each other and relate sequentially to what the viewer will encounter next.   The animation has as its starting point an idea the artist had for a sculpture in a landscape and has taken on another life in the virtual world – a fantastical version of a pastoral scene. \nMartin notes\, ‘It was sparked by my always seeing hay bales from trains. They always seem mysterious to me scattered over the landscape and make me think of how leprechauns fooled people who wanted their gold by placing rocks or hawthorn trees everywhere.  These hay bales appear to have landed from space and sit there day and night in every season.’ Some of the works in this exhibition have featured in a recent exhibition at the magnificent early eighteenth-century Palazzo Birago in Turin in 2025.    Visitors now can view these works from an entirely different perspective here in the contemporary setting of the Lab gallery in Dublin. \nAbout the artist\nFergus Martin is an Irish painter\, sculptor and photographer\, known for his post-minimlaist aesthetic.  His most recent solo exhibitions were Space – New Prints – at Green On Red Gallery \, Dublin and Formal and Wild  – Landscapes at Palazzo Birago\, Turin\, Italy\, in Dublin.  Also in 2025\, he took part in the group exhibitions CAIM at Slane Castle\, curated by Jenn Ellis and Matilda Liu\, and Factory Made at Green On Red Gallery\, Dublin. \nIn 2020 Martin’s sculpture\, Oak\, was installed at the International Criminal Court in The Hague\, a gift from the Irish Government to the court; a new permanent sculpture\, Barrel was installed in the grounds of the Irish Museum of Modern Art\, Dublin.  Also in 2020\, his large-scale photograph\,Chair\, was purchased by the National Gallery of Ireland. \nMartin is a member of Aosdana and is represented by Green On Red Gallery\, Dublin. \n

SUMMARY:Child of Prague
DESCRIPTION:Child of Prague\, with a sound best described as an Irish take on midwest emo\, are a band based in Dublin\, Ireland. Members hail from San Francisco\, Dublin\, Boston\, London\, and Tipperary. \nInitially beginning as a writing project between Jack McDonnell and Adam Tracey\, Child of Prague evolved into a six-piece\, as members now include Amelia Durac\, Rachel Baum\, Noah ‘Fry’ Edwards and Miranda Gallacher. The band fuses chamber pop instrumentation along with a love of Irish traditional music\, and pulls inspiration from folk\, Irish trad\, jazz\, classical and math rock genres\, as well as numerous artists that range from Lisa Hannigan to Chicago. Child of Prague thrives on collaboration; each player comes from a distinct musical background\, allowing for the songs to evolve uniquely and combine strong guitar-led melodies with the mellow timbre of the violin and saxophone. \nThe band’s first EP \,‘Clothed in the Sun\,’ captures a period of change during the band’s college years spent in Dublin. Reflecting on childhood\, adoration\, connection\, and ageingfear\, the EP represents a point of tension between reminiscing and moving forward. In line with their raw\, acoustic energy\, ‘Taking’ and ‘Burning’ were recorded at Adam and Jack’s student house in Dublin\, and are laced with the cosiness and nostalgia central to the lyrics. ‘Basking Sharks’ is a nod to the band’s early influences\, driven by fiercely intricate guitar tapping and contrasted by sharp\, heavy hits. ‘Grey Hairs\,’ another high energy track\, showcases the band’s ability to manipulate its unique instrumentation\, stripping back and climbing up with intense lyricism that ponders the transience of life and fears of ageing. The first single of the EP\, ‘Skin’\, is perhaps the most accurate soundscape of the band in 2025. The violin and saxophone swell with the enrapturing climb of Amelia Durac’s vocals\, brought closer to the listener with the warm tone of the guitars and the disarmingly honest and raw lyrics of Adam Tracey. \nThe EP combines powerful vocals and sincere instrumentation with the band’s willingness to break the confines of traditional structures\, leaving behind a collection of songs that celebrate the meeting of the band’s diverse influences and the evolution of their sound.

On a stroll around the inner city\, our guide will explain the real-life inspiration behind some of Joyce’s most celebrated writing\, demonstrating just how central the streetscape of the ‘Hibernian metropolis’ was to the author’s life and art. The tour visits such stops as Belvedere College\, the Gresham Hotel\, the James Joyce Statue\, Davy Byrnes\, and the National Library.\n\nThis is an excellent and fun introduction to Joyce in a bustling part of the city.\n\nThe James Joyce Centre offers two tours: Introducing Joyce’s Dublin and Footsteps of Leopold Bloom.\n\nEvery Thursday\, Friday & Saturday at 11 am. Duration 2 hours.\n\nAdmission to the James Joyce Centre is included. \nThe James Joyce Centre is supported by the Department of Culture\, Communications and Sport.

SUMMARY:The Bureau De Change Song Contest
DESCRIPTION:It is that beautiful time of year again. The sun is shining\, the flowers are blooming and the comedians are singing. \nThe Collaborations Agency and MCD are delighted to announce the return of The Bureau De Change Song Contest for its sixth instalment\, taking place at Dublin’s iconic 3Olympia Theatre on Friday 15th May 2026. \n\n\nCreated by acclaimed comedian Tony Cantwell\, The Bureau De Change Song Contest has become one of the most anticipated nights in Ireland’s comedy calendar. A riotous celebration of music\, mischief and outright mayhem\, the show sees some of the country’s most beloved comedians channel the spirit of Eurovision in a gloriously unhinged parody spectacle. \nEach performer selects a country\, writes and produces an original song from scratch\, and competes live on stage for the coveted crown. The result is a fiercely competitive\, joyfully chaotic showdown that blends sharp satire with full-throttle musical performance. It is Eurovision\, but through a distinctly Irish comedic lens. \nNow in its sixth year\, the contest continues to grow in scale and ambition\, with previous editions earning sell-out crowds and a devoted following. The 2026 event promises to be the biggest yet\, bringing together an exceptional line-up of talent including Tony Cantwell\, Michael Fry\, Justine Stafford\, Ali Fox\, John Doran\, Killian Sundermann\, Kevin McGahern\, Alison Spittle\, Meg Reilly\, Peter McGann\, Sadhbh McLoughlin\, Ryan Carrick\, with more acts to be announced. \nTony Cantwell said: “This show started as a chaotic idea that refused to behave. Six years on\, it has taken on a life of its own. Every year the bar gets higher\, the costumes get bolder and the songs get more outrageous. It is everything Eurovision represents\, just with more jokes and fewer rules.”

SUMMARY:QOW TRIO -The Rule of Three Album Tour
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the return of the generation-spanning powerhouse QOW Trio as they launch their fearless third album\, The Rule of Three. \n\n\n\n\nThree is the magic number”. Join us for an evening with QOW Trio\, a unique ensemble that bridges the gap between jazz legends and the new vanguard. Their latest work\, The Rule of Three\, takes the deep tradition of the classic piano-less tenor trio—steeped in melody and swing—and pushes it into the adventurous “uncharted hinterlands” of free improvisation. \nFrom the influences of Sonny Rollins and Duke Ellington to the fierce energy of Albert Ayler and even themes from classic cowboy movies\, this performance promises “a surprise at every turn\,” delivered with total sincerity and a driving desire to bring the audience along for the ride. \nSpike Wells (Drums): A true legend of British jazz. Celebrating his 80th birthday and the 65th year of an extraordinary career\, Spike has provided the beat for icons like Tubby Hayes\, Stan Getz\, and Roland Kirk. He was even a student of the great Philly Joe Jones. \nRiley Stone-Lonergan (Tenor Saxophone): Hailing from Galway\, Ireland\, Riley is a Yamaha Jazz Scholar and a rising star on the London scene. His “boundless creative imagination” and stimulating original compositions are the heart of the trio’s modern sound. \nEddie Myer (Bass): Representing the diversity of “Gen X\,” Eddie provides the “heavy gut-string” foundation. A staple of the Brighton jazz scene and director of the New Generation Jazz project\, he brings a big-toned\, swinging presence inspired by the likes of Richard Davis and Henry Grimes. \nCelebrate the return of the generation-spanning powerhouse QOW Trio as they launch their fearless third album\, The Rule of Three. \n\n\n\n\nThe Music\nExpect a setlist that flows seamlessly through: \n\nOriginals: Such as the confident swagger of the title track “The Rule of Three”.\nReimagined Classics: A “woozy waltz” rendition of Strayhorn’s Lush Life.\nWild Cards: The unpredictable\, “tag-team” improvisation of Kurt Angle and the haunting energy of Ayler’s Ghosts.

SUMMARY:THE HANDSOME FAMILY
DESCRIPTION:The Handsome Family today announce a UK and Irish tour to mark the re-release of their classic album “Singing Bones”. The album was the 6th album from the husband and wife outfit of Brett & Rennie Sparks and was the first record from the band since moving away from the midwestern alternative country scene of Chicago\, Illinois to the desert southwest of Albuquerque\, New Mexico. Here their songs became infused with the desert sun and crawling reptiles. Mariachi and Morricone – Western Gothic\, if you will. The record was released in 2003. Ten years later\, the desert mystery “Far From Any Road” was used as the theme for HBO’S “True Detective.” The song became a worldwide hit. Now for the first time\, it will be released on Vinyl and Deluxe CD\, with bonus material. The tour sees the band return for 2 nights at their London home-from-home The Union Chapel \nRennie Sparks says of that time: \n“It was a hot July afternoon in 2001 when the fire ants attacked me. I walked right over an anthill on my way to trim the cacti. The ants quickly swarmed my leg and began biting viciously again and again. I spent the rest of the day on the couch moaning in pain. Deep within the agony I heard a high pitched sound. I heard the ant queen calling to me from out beneath the driveway. I got up and wrote the lyrics to “Far From Any Road.” The ant queen’s magic is in every word of every song on this record. She is the hole\, the ghost\, the wild wind and the fallen peaches. How else can I explain that “Singing Bones” is still alive and well at 23.” \nSince its release\, “Far From Any Road” has accumulated more than 45 M YouTube views and 153 M Spotify streams\, a clear testimony to its huge cultural reach and lasting impact.

SUMMARY:James Joyce Centre Walking Tours
DESCRIPTION:Guides from the James Joyce Centre take you through Dublin\, exploring the history of the city and the various locations described by Ireland’s greatest writer\, James Joyce.\n\nThough Joyce lived most of his life outside of Ireland\, Dublin would provide the backdrop for virtually all of his work.
